Through the passion for his personal recovery, Jam comes from a place of love, and you truly hear it in his writings and music. We are proud to have Jam a part of Rockers In Recovery®, shining an ever loving light of hope to a world filled with stigma of addiction. This man is a true recovery soldier, passing on the blessings of his gift of sobriety every day to others. John Hollis, Co-Founder at Rockers In Recovery® – Media.
Jam-Alker-Sophrosyne-2017

Bio-Jam Alker.Com –  Who is Jam Alker?  Soon after he found heroin, Jam Alker put down his guitar and did not pick it up again for ten-plus years. What followed would be what he calls “the most toxic relationship I’ve ever been in” — a decade of extreme highs and lows that brought him, literally, to his knees, begging for a long-needed reawakening. “What I found out was that drugs were not my problem; drugs were my solution to my problem.”

“I had a ton of struggles, but then also a ton of victories as a result of reaching a point in my life where the pain was so great, something had to change.”

For Jam, this problem manifested itself, not just in addiction, but egotism, materialism, and compulsiveness. He found his way back to his guitar and began to spin his experiences into stories told through music. These stories explore life’s dark, gritty underbelly and the despair that can compel bad decisions, without judgment or condemnation, but often with hope.

And he’s found that it’s not just addicts and their families who’ve found kinship through his music; his message of redemption hits home for just about anyone who’s discontent. “My story is not unique,” Jam often says. “Everyone has unhealthy behaviors they go to in times of desperation.”

It was music that helped him change his life — and it’s music that continues to keep him on his path. “Music is my therapy. Putting my experiences, both deadly and life saving, into song have helped me to heal. I owe a great deal of my new life to my music,” he says.

He chronicles this story of addiction and recovery with his first full-length solo album, Sophrosyne.

Drummer Sam Galindo – Music and Recovery

Drummer Sam Galindo - Music & Recovery;

Listen To Interview Click Arrow

Drummer Sam Galindo – Music and Recovery; My recovery started with Broward County Sheriff’s finally bringing me in for my last Main Jail detox May 13, 2015. Consequentially that’s also my clean date now. I had a fairly short stay of about 90 days, but it was not my first. After and offer of 5 years of prison, I reached out to a gentleman by the name of Mike Lieberworth who came in and spoke on my behalf. Long story short, I made it into halfway and into the program, after a little resistance from the disease of course. I have 20 months clean now and in that 20 months I found that no matter what, my idle hands are still the Devil’s playground.

I had to turn back to my first love which is music. What better way to tend to idle hands than putting some drumsticks back in em’!! I play every chance I can and I consider it my form of “Chaotic Meditation”. Anyone who has ever tried to convince me it’s anything other than meditation is quickly made a believer when I explain to them the feeling that playing music gives me. If you love music and you are in recovery, my best advice would be to never let it go. It’s goes hand and hand with my recovery and no one can take that connection away from me as long as I hold it in my heart as I always have.

Tim McGraw – Bitterness keeps you from flyin’

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

rsz_6692ab3974927bc866421ea4a60ecc50_1.jpgBy John Hollis RIR Co-Founder – Addiction Recovery is more than just not using, we have to take on a new way of thinking and living. There are times I’ve lost focus of this. Letting the fear and resentments of the day clog the channel to my spirit can stifle my helping others. So getting some alone time and looking at my behaviors, my attitudes, my motives, and how I’m treating others is very important to my recovery. One of the ways I get grounded, I Listen to music.

Videos like Tim McGraw’s – Humble And Kind, Written by Lori Mckenna is one of those songs that helps me to see what’s important, the  song gives me hope, and it also gives me a kind of sober running beacon in real time to check against my self-centered desires. Music is one of my recovery tools and videos like Humble and Kind helps me to ask myself, how am I living my life today?

One part of the lyrics I love the most is;
“Don’t expect a free ride from no one
Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why:
Bitterness keeps you from flyin’
Always stay humble and kind”

Check out the video, let me know your thoughts?

Tim McGraw – The country star gets candid about his past dependence on “liquid courage” and what was at stake if he didn’t get sober. Huffington Post – 08/26/2015

“You can come up with a million excuses why you drink too much,” he said. “Lack of confidence, the success that came so quickly, and then some of the things you didn’t realize was trauma, I guess, back when you were 11… I think the older you get, the more you start realizing those things.”

As time went on, McGraw came to the harsh realization for himself.

“It got to the point where I knew that I drank too much,” he said. “I knew that it was affecting my personal relationships, it was affecting my professional relationships, it was affecting my family. It was turning me into a person that I didn’t want to be… I was at a point where I could lose everything that I had in my life, first and foremost, my family. It [was] time to stop. And I stopped.”

Sober since 2008, the night before embarking on another tour, McGraw said he had his last drink. “ I flew to Florida that morning from being wasted the night before, and started that tour. Haven’t drank since.” Read more @ How Tim McGraw’s Drinking Nearly Cost Him Everything

Sobriety Unplugged – The Impact

Main RIR Recovery Radio Partner Sponsorship

Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson

Sobriety Unplugged – Paul Stephen Wilson

Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson to shed a light on addiction recovery based songwriters.  Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions and have a whole lot of fun while doing it.

The desire to avoid experiencing and regulating intense emotions are major factors in substance abuse disorders (SUD) and relapse following treatment (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007). An important aspect of treatment is clients learning how to feel and tolerate their internal emotions without the use of substances. Music is an ideal way in which to evoke intense emotional states in people with SUD. This is a form of treatment that can help “individuals process strong emotional states in the absence of substance use”. (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007).

Substance use and music share an important commonality. They can alter consciousness (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010), provide direct and immediate instant gratification (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) and produce feelings of “bliss and serenity” (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013).

The experience of music therapy can elicit both conscious and unconscious emotions (Inselmann, 2007) (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012). Through the verbal processing of the musical experience, clients can now identify and put into words emotions they were previously unaware of or unable to express. Music can break through walls that restrict their capacity for recovery (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011) (Sergio Castillo-Pérez, 2010) (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013) (de l’Etoile, 2002).

Sobriety UnpluggedMusic therapy has been proven to produce positive outcomes for clients ambivalent or resistant to treatment or have difficulty expressing feelings. Music has the ability to influence thinking and feeling which are prerequisites for behavioral change (de l’Etoile, 2002) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012). Research shows that the experience of listening to the music, lyrics, and processing what they experienced reduces feelings of shame, depression, anxiety, isolation and guilt. Clients can gain mutual identification, acquisition of a new coping skill, and enhanced optimism and hope from this experience. (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (Sergio Castillo-Pérez, 2010) (Silverman, 2011) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011).

Sobriety Unplugged Case studies prove the effectiveness of utilizing music as part of the treatment experience. Music is more than just entertainment; it is a proven, beneficial intervention in treatment. Music and the therapy process can create behavioral changes as well as the ability to process and identify emotions: (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001) (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (de l’Etoile, 2002) (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011).

All research shows that simply listening to music does not have the same effect; it is the live experience and the process after that creates the intense impact. Clients that have difficulties with appropriate social interaction at the verbal and non-verbal level, lack of motivation for communication, poor relationships, lack of ability in sharing experiences and poor sense of self, will benefit most from this type of therapy. (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001). (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010). In other words, this therapeutic experience will improve the outcome of treatment for the substance abuse population.

Professionals in the substance abuse field are always looking for ways to improve the therapeutic experience for their clients. Key components of achieving and maintaining recovery are: motivation, optimism, hope, and coping skills (learning how to deal with and express emotions in a healthy way). Many times, clients have a difficult time opening up, expressing, and processing their emotions. Due to having limited time with clients (often 30 days in treatment), clinicians must look for effective ways in bringing about this process as quickly as they can so they can help the client begin the process of healing. RIR does this in a way that will engage the client, capture their attention, entertain them and have such a profound impact on their life; they can carry it with them always.

The Story: Sobriety Unplugged Musicians walk in capturing the undivided attention of everyone in the room. After all, this is not just a speaker coming in; this is RIR musicians, guitarists and song writers. Clients are looking forward to hearing their story and will listen intently as our musicians share their personal struggle with substance abuse and their journey to recovery. RIR musicians share their experiences in a way that will make them laugh, contemplate and often times cry.

The Music: Sobriety Unplugged musicians and sometimes a special guest will then perform; singing and playing songs about active addiction and recovery. The lyrics and music combined produce a multitude of emotional reactions, surprising the clients as the experience brings to light emotions they have had a difficult time expressing or perhaps were unaware of.

The Therapy: Clients have come for this very special treat looking forward to the break in routine. They have had RIR musical contributors come to perform just for them. Every emotion they have experienced has been natural; unintentional. This is entertainment, not therapy right? Actually, though they are unaware, this experience with the RIR musical contributor has created an amazing opportunity for emotional growth, gaining coping skills, knowledge, hope and the opportunity to walk away from this experience one step closer to their new lives. Jack Kelly CAP, who is familiar with RIR and the experience will now help the clients process the emotions they felt and discovered, the hope and motivation they found, and show them how they can use all of this as a coping skill both now and in the future as a tool in their recovery. Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions with a clinician in a group setting also allows the facility to bill as a group session.

Sobriety Unplugged – The Impact: The experience of RIR can be the beginning of therapy for clients who have a difficult time expressing themselves, bring forth emotions and experiences clients were previously unaware they had, give hope, add motivation and provide a different outlet for clients to express themselves. Clients can learn to channel their emotions and even escape from reality for a few moments without having to use a drink or drug to do so.

Sobriety Unplugged Musicians stories, lyrics about substance use, their struggles, and recovery allow clients to process through music what many can’t through other means; creating that opening and breaking down that wall. Specifically to SUD, music and the therapy that follows provide the opportunity for the client to access feelings that are both integral to their addiction and pose obstacles in recovery.

Remember “Sobriety Unplugged”, visits schools, sober events, conferences, sober houses, addiction detox centers, drug and alcohol treatment centers all over the United States. Sobriety Unplugged along with select members of the come to share their message of hope, and play an unplugged set of songs geared towards recovery.

Darkest Before Dawn – Eric Clapton

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

14045991_1159517330758806_3801566807317899195_n

John Hollis – RIR Co-Founder

By John Hollis, RIR Co-Founder – It was 2004 and I was stuck in a room drinking and drugging like a pig. I was using 24 hours a day 7 days a week. My state of mental health was off the chain to say the least. Deep down inside I was on a road to death and knew it and was really ok with it. It’s Always Darkest Before Dawn.

I was working in the Midwest and every night I would spend hours getting high, watching porn, and listening to music online. One night I was searching my favorite musical artist Eric Clapton. To my surprise up came a video of him talking about his recovery and how his life had changed. I was blown away, and started to listen to it over and over. This video of my musical hero gave me so much hope. I was near death and it took two more years to come into recovery. I always kept playing that video over and over in my head it gave me hope over the next two years in times of suicidal and morbid thinking.

eric-clapton-music-quotesTwo years after I got sober in 2006, Rockers in Recovery® was formed in 2008 by Lori Welch Sullivan and Myself. What began as a radio program to spread the message of recovery through news, interviews, and music has grown into a multifaceted media and production company.

In 2010, I was invited by Kim Martin, Program Director of Crossroads Centre Antigua to broadcast live from Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. What an amazing day, the Rockers In Recovery® -Music Festivals vision was born that day. A way to carrying a message of  Addiction Education & Awareness and do it through Rock-N-Roll.

John Hollis Founder of Rockers In Recovery

2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival

On February 12, 2011 the vision came true, we did our first Education & Awareness music festival called love of recovery. We have gone on to produce twenty seven concerts, festivals, and drug and alcohol addiction community meet and greets across the United States. Rockers in Recovery® now attracts thousands to our music festivals and reaches millions more through our online media reach. The message Rockers in Recovery® is spreading through rock ‘n’ roll: there is hope, addiction recovery is possible.

I thank Eric Clapton for being open about his recovery and for being a power of example to me to this day. Unbeknownst to me, through the work of my Higher Power, that experience helped me to shift my thinking towards recovery, it would also become many visions to a movement that would change my life and many others.

Addiction Education & Awareness Concept Through Music Is Working

Main RIR Recovery Radio Partner Sponsorship

It’s Amazing, and we are so proud to see how since 2011 (going on twenty nine of our own productions) the Rockers In Recovery® (RIR) concept of recovery concerts/festivals to carrying a message of Education & Awareness is working.

This same message is now being duplicated by many in the addiction recovery advocacy movement groups like the October, 2015 Washington DC Unite to Face Addiction Rally (with Joe Walsh and other well know musicians) , the 2014 Fed Up Rally, and now the 2016 SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week. It’s happening all over the United States. Since 2014/2015 many treatment programs have even adopted as a modality in the form of RIR Unplugged, with some using the concept as primary treatment.  What an honor and we look forward to seeing many more use our unique form of addiction prevention and education.

Tom Coderre ,Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA

Music and Self Expression – Helping Drug Addicts In Recovery

Rockers In Recovery - Media

Andy-Studio-Interview-m7g6jcl3faxvs96socfokq3puo0f0wji3pzrx6v1d8

Little Creek Lodge – Drummer Andy Pace

THE CONNECTION WITH DRUG ADDICTION & MUSIC:

Music is an extremely influential form of expression. It combines words and sound to convey a message that often reaches euphoric levels. Drugs and alcohol are meant to produce euphoria as well. Combine the two and the result is a very powerful and lasting imprint on the brain.

Pop music teaches us to use empowerment related to our identity. We use drugs and alcohol in combination in order to enhance that power. We use music to reinforce our sense of belonging to a particular social group. Addicts and alcoholics sometimes claim, ‘music is the only thing that understands me.’

Sparking the creative process without the use of drugs or alcohol is a very important step in early recovery. Re-starting the imagination takes internal motivation, work, and coaching. Discussion and encouragement are needed to begin the process of playing or writing music. One of the by-products of addiction is poor self-expression. Coming out of this thought pattern is difficult. Playing music in a healthy environment is a new experience, and practicing self-expression while allowing thoughts to flow freely without fear can feel quite foreign at first.

Recovery can be triggered by a vision, a sight, or a sound that awakens the senses:

When a resident at Little Creek Lodge, (a stat of the art music and rehabilitation facility located in Pennsylvania) is ready to record a project they call in an engineer to their in house recording studio who guides resident in the recording process. The prospect of editing, mixing, and mastering a piece of music is really exciting for residents. Little Creek tries to create one CD per year that is devoted to the writings of the residents. The process helps to provide feelings of accomplishment. There is great satisfaction found in the experience of completing a task from beginning to end, and residents take pride in their successes. Using music as a tool to create a chemical reaction in the brain to help recovery happen more quickly.  Music also helps to break down defenses to help facilitate, motivate and inspire clients to the change’s necessary to support long-term recovery.

Drummer Andy Pace and Little Creek Lodge is committed to building a strong foundation for his musical clients. Real recovery from drug and alcohol addiction cannot take place until we look beyond the pointing finger; until recovery becomes a realization and the person’s own idea. Something different happens to each and every one of them.

The man behind the vision, Drummer and Founder Andy Pace – His musical career began in the storied clubs of downtown New York City. As a teenager, he picked up small gigs at local hangouts like Cafe Wah and CBGB’s. Soon thereafter, he landed job as the house drummer for the original Copa Cabana, where he worked alongside Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, Tony Orlando, The Cornelius Brothers, and many other great R&B acts of the era. His journey as an artist and creative spirit had only just begun.

In the mid 70’s, Andy landed a gig with one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most exciting voices—Gary U.S. Bonds. His second date with Gary was Madison Square Garden. Andy was just 21 years old.

Gigs alongside legendary performers like Dick Clark, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, The Five Satins, and The Coasters followed, and Andy began travelling extensively. He spent the following years as a true touring musician, living all over the world from Lake Tahoe to New Orleans to Hawaii, Switzerland, and England.

In 1987, he married Barbara Warren¬Pace and the two would collaborate together on various musical projects. Barbara was a well-known artist manager herself, having helped guide the careers of legends like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston.

The next big break came In 1991. C+C Music Factory’s massive hit “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” took the world by storm, and Andy’s drumming provided the song’s backbeat. The album sold over 7 million CDs and led to MTV Music Awards, Saturday Night Live Appearances, and worldwide adulation. Not only that, but the song launched house music into the mainstream of popular music, where it’s remained ever since.

Andy obtained a degree in Addiction Counseling from State University of New York (S.U.N.Y) and then in 2008 founded Little Creek Lodge, a rehabilitation facility that has gone on to treat hundreds of patients struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Now, as the Lodge’s mission continues to expand, a new opportunity has emerged for Andy’s musical gifts. – “Rehab Recordings” is a record label and recording studio based in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania, that produces Recovery music to promote a sober lifestyle – Rehab Recordings.

8 Years Of Addiction Education and Prevention Through Rock-N-Roll

 Rockers In Recovery® – Media

RIR 8Tom Coderre ,Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA -” Rockers In Recovery brings the private treatment sector, addiction education, and the addiction advocacy non-profit sector together in a unique way as no one else  is doing anywhere in the United States. What makes RIR unique, the message is all around and through the universal language of music with some great rockers of our day. They combine it with educational speakers and advocacy groups. RIR brings it all together at their community addiction education meet and greets, and addiction awareness and prevention concerts/festivals. I found as I walked around and met people today is there is a mix of families seeking help, family members of people in recovery, recovery supporters, treatment centers with their clients, the recovery community, and people from the community just coming by to see what it was all about. The one thing I have been hearing over and over is the community loved the unique message of hope. I look forward to seeing more of RIR across the United States throughout 2015 doing Addiction Awareness, Education and Prevention through Rock-N-Roll”. (Quote From 2015 Love Of Recovery music festival).

Rockers In RecoveryThank you to all of our friends and supporters for 8 years of love and support of our message of hope.  We are not a treatment center – Since January 2008 – Rockers In Recovery Radio & Productions (Rockers In Recovery – RIR) is an organization with the sole mission to provide prevention and education to anyone who suffers with drug addiction/alcoholism.  In the beginning our thought was (and still is)  “if we can just help one person” it’s worth the labor of love. Well, over the years we have been able to educate and help thousands seeking recovery from addiction.
Education is the key to unlock the door of freedom and Rockers In Recovery is dedicated to addiction recovery through music, news, interviews, events, and festivals taking place within our communities across the United States.  Multiple Media addiction/education informational based websites with lots of Social Media platforms is how we educate. It all started in January 2008 doing interviews on RIR Addiction Talk Radio and 8 years later our addiction/education message is presented through the following; live concerts and festivals, community meet & greets, social media posting, RIR & Guest blogging, articles in the RIR magazine, (in print and online), RIR Live Concert and Event Streaming. This makes it easy for our addiction/education message to reach millions of people globally with just a click of a mouse and thousands face to face at our concerts, festivals and events.

Rockers In Recovery (RIR) is a community of dedicated people who live to carry a message of hope to addicts and alcoholics and their families who all are suffering. Our shared common goal to spread hope and enlightenment across the country has turned out to be something we never expected. RIR is an organization with the sole mission to provide education and help to anyone who suffers with drug addiction and alcoholism and we do it through our various platforms.

The Story: RIR Musicians walk in to their festivals capturing the undivided attention of everyone at the festival. After all, this is not just a speaker coming on stage; this is musicians, guitarists and songwriters. Clients are looking forward to hearing their story and will listen intently as our musicians share their personal struggle with substance abuse and their journey to recovery. RIR musicians and friends share their experiences in a way that will make them laugh, contemplate and often times cry. When RIR does concerts/festivals they invite all the local treatment centers and IOP programs, along with sober living houses in the area to come out and experience this first hand.

Twenty One RIR Concerts and Festivals Since 2011. RIR has teamed up on a community grass roots level to help a lot over 5 years, we have gone on to produce twenty one concert and festival productions. RIR was the first recovery origination producing addiction and awareness through Rock-N-Roll at the 2012 ATP – International Tennis Championship to a NYC sold out show at the Cutting Room for the missed placed victims that were devastated from Hurricane Sandy. In addition to a benefit concert, RIR did another community event at a local Connecticut school to benefit a street-level non-profit business. RIR put together what was a benefit for the Special Olympics of South Florida and the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County.

The thinking and actions around the RIR camp are simple; educate, help people in need of help for a loved one or themselves.  RIR teams up with addiction professionals that are present at all of these shows, in order to provide answers to people seeking help. People can go right to the recovery information tent manned all day to help everyone. Each show has band and solo acts along with a list of 10 minute addiction professional speaker in between bands. RIR is educating while have fun in a fun loving environment.

We do many free community awareness and prevention concerts through Rock-N-Roll all over the United States. Some are just to name a few, the D&R Theater Aberdeen Washington, to a standing room only crowd with the same results at the luxury hotel in the heart of Las Vegas, known as the Bellagio. RIR was Rockin’ the 2014 RecoveryWalks at Penns Landing, Philadelphia, Pa. in front of 23,000 people, along with the 4th Annual RIR Music Festival in Feb 2015. RIR also donated the RIR Band & production services to the Hope All Day Festival in New Jersey 2015. This was to help raise funds for the Hope All Day Foundation.

Recovery is not only about helping yourself; it is about who you can help as well. When Hurricane Sandy struck NYC, people didn’t only just help themselves, but also recovery efforts came far and wide from many people – that is the soul of recovery, to help other people and pay it forward.

Recovery is having the power to get your life back by letting go to the aspects of life to a higher power. By relinquishing control to the things we cannot change, we realize there is more fulfillment and empowerment when we ask for help and return it by helping others in ways we can.

Bruce Springsteen – Navigate Depression

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

John Hollis, Rockers in Recovery® Co-Founder

John Hollis, Rockers in Recovery® Co-Founder

By John Hollis, Rockers in Recovery® Co-Founder – When I was 9 years old I was driving in my cousins car , he popped in a tape Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band – This is one of the songs that started my 40 year love affair with music .  It also introduced me to air guitar and air drumming, LOL.

I grew up in a house filled with music, my brother Joe is a drummer and I ended up with my 1st set at 12 years old. I didn’t go on to be Max Weinberg  (Minister of the Big Beat) , but what it did for me was teach me true passion, not by playing, but by listening.  As a child and all through life in good times and bad, music has made me feel whole.

In recovery music brings up feelings for me of  peace,  joy, love, and hope, it brings me to tears at times, it can also put a smile on my face, it brings me to compassion, it motivates me, it helps me to be empathetic, most importantly it centers me to the point were at times, I can even feel the presence of my God..

Through music and its awesome noise I live with a purpose today.  Through it I have been given many visions throughout the years, today I’m living a dream.  I’ve tried to run away from the vision a few times, but it always brings me home to the most important message, hope through music.

Bruce Springsteen credits his music with helping him navigate depression and says playing marathon shows until he was exhausted helped chase away the blues.

‘‘I think music was the way that I medicated myself in the beginning. It was the first thing that centered me and chased away the blues,’’  Bruce Springsteen

Born to Run’s Jungleland is without a doubt my favorite song on the album, for me it’s 9 minutes of pure anti-depression music.  The late legendary Big Man, Clarence Clemons sax playing and Bruce’s vocals sear me to the soul with joy. Take a listen to Jungleland – Can You Feel the Music? My answer … Yes I can, and thank you Clarence & Bruce. Download Born To Run

Using Music – Spreading The Message of Sobriety

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

I don’t think any one thing carries more memories with it than music. Music has been an ever present friend throughout every stage of my growth. I listened to my parent’s music while riding in the car as a small child. Shortly after, I started to notice the music my older siblings listened to. Next, of course, I started to develop my own taste.

Music and the people who played it, influenced the way I thought, my clothes and the way I did or didn’t cut my hair. When I was lonely, music kept me company. When I was down, music lifted me up. When I was joyous music helped me celebrate. I see Her face when I hear That song. Another brings me back to the political unrest our country experienced. Any one of several take me back to the movement of peace and love. Yet another to the blending of many different instruments into the harmonious flow of orchestrated music. I write about how I feel, but nothing can capture feelings like a good song.

When I got sober a few years back, I didn’t think I would ever have fun again. I realized, however, that sober misery had to be better than the life I was living. Not only have I found happiness in sobriety, I’ve discovered the best way of life I could have ever imagined. I didn’t have to leave music behind either.

There existed a wealth of music about the struggle approaching and life in sobriety by more artist than I could number. Not only that, but there are organizations to promote it. Organizations like Rockers InRecovery. If you aren’t already following Rockers In Recovery on Facebook, please check them out.

Using Music – Spreading The Message of Sobriety; Rockers In Recovery celebrated their 7 year milestone back in January of 2015 and they make music available in a number of ways while spreading the message of sobriety. At times music has been my best and only friend. I believe that God gave us music so we could express what we could never put into words. I know where I’d like to go right now and I know just the music that will help me get there.

Peace,

Keith Bayard

Rockers In Recovery Music Festival

It Takes A Sponsor To Get Things Done

Rockers In Recovery Music FestivalBy Carol Harblin, Months prior to the 2015 February Rockers In Recovery festival, there is much work put into the celebration.  Not only will this year’s festival be celebrating love of recovery, but also RIR is full of gratitude for this year’s sponsors for the festival.

Just as recovering addicts require a sponsor to help them through their recovery journey, festivals, radio shows, and venues each need sponsors from steadfast community supporters.

The Academy for Addiction Professionals is an educational facility that promotes online and offline learning to people who wish to have refresher classes and to those who desire to be in the recovery addiction field.

“We value Rockers In Recovery as an organization and what it represents – that people can have fun at events and concerts without resorting to drugs and alcohol,” said Crystal Shlifer, Director of Business Development at Academy for Addiction Professionals.

From RIR Friend Jake Fleming,

“And as I predicted earlier, Philly got a classic rock a** kickin’ from the “Rockers In Recovery” All Star band. I want to thank Rob Vincent, John Hollis, Lori Sullivan, and the RIR All Stars for coming to Philadelphia and celebrating with us. It was great to finally meet you all “The struggle continues, but victory is certain!”

From RIR Friend Fred Martin,

“Rockers In Recovery and The RIR All-Star Band helped make the Pro-Act Recovery Walk a huge success this year with 22,000 people in attendance. It was directly through RIR’s branding and PR that we rocked the city of Philadelphia . Thank You RIR for all you did. People are still talking about how great the RIR All-Star Band was.”
From RIR Friend Beverly Haberle,
“Rockers In Recovery and The Rockers In Recovery All-Star Band well excited our expectations, the band was great and Pro-Act was very happy to have RIR with us.”From RIR Friend Marita O’Connell,”Rockers In Recovery made the 14th Pro-Act Recovery Walks the best walk we ever had. Thank You RIR”
From Our Friend Erin Riffe,

“RIR came to Aberdeen WA. and produced the best event we have ever had with our organization. They not only filled the seats. They also branded and marketed the organization to the point we are having them back in 2015”.  Thank You RIR you all Rock

Each of the sponsors agree that by giving back to the community it is important, because it serves the recovery community. In addition it is creating awareness to the public by association and example.

It is important that recovery education and awareness reaches the masses because people who suffer through their addictions will know that recovery is an honorable and positive result. People need to know what their resources are and where to go. Unfortunately there are people who still believe that recovery is shameful, but that is not the case anymore; recovery and coping in effective and functional ways is more respectable and honorable.

Physical, hands-on support is essential to getting things done. It takes a village to run a business. A business is there for the community, so it is essential for the community to step forward and show their gratitude for that business.

This is what it’s all about folks:

From Alicia T. – Tue, 09/30/14 11:21 am
“I just wanted to thank you guys at RIR for helping me get into rehab last February. I even was allowed to bring my guitar! It was good because it forced me to deal with issues I had buried. I struggled quite a bit but finally the miracle happened for me. The obsession to use has been lifted and I have 78 days clean I love life and my recovery and I am looking forward to a year clean so I can go to hospitals and jails to spread the message of recovery. Without your help I would have overdosed because I felt hopeless to get into rehab. You guys put me in touch with the person who found a place for me when all others turned me down because of my Medicare. I will never forget and will pass it on whenever possible.”

A Miracle In Itself

RIR,

Just wanted to drop you a line about the show in Aberdeen, Washington last month. Everyone involved with the show was extremely professional and well prepared.

It was obvious that R.I.R. is an organization focused on recovery, who knows exactly how to get the message across to people through it’s concert series.

As a drummer who has done his share of concerts, I can tell you the show went off without a hitch, from the musicians to the sound guys, to security. The type of music for the show reached everybody that was there, as was evidenced by several people taking the steps to get into treatment! A miracle in itself.

I’m looking forward to doing many more concerts with R.I.R.

Sincerely,

John Gianoulis

Re-Discovering Creativity in Recovery

Music HealsOne of the misconceptions artistic addicts and alcoholics have for not giving up their substance of choice is that by abusing alcohol or drugs it makes them more creative. This idea has been perpetuated by an association between drug experimentation, imagination and musical ability. There is an unreasonable fear that when the drugs and alcohol are taken away, the artist will become a boring, uninspired version of themselves.

These wild ideas generated from glimpses of fuzzy- brained withdrawal symptoms experienced whenever an addict or alcoholic managed some time sober just excuse the vicious cycle. While the cloudy thinking that characterizes rehab can hinder creativity for a time, long-term recovery will actually increase artistic ability. The tendency to pick up a guitar or sit down to write may be daunting at first, but like everything valuable, it’s worth a few awkward first steps.

In recovery mental clarity and cognitive ability will improve, and so the ability to effectively express through art will return with energy, strength and most certainly improved skill. The therapeutic nature of music itself is healing and can become a valuable coping mechanism and source of meditation

Another gift of sobriety is discovering the ability to transmit inspiration through music. Typically when using and drinking, our musical expression was a reflection of a self-centered universe. Sobriety promotes engaging with life in ways we wouldn’t normally; venturing outside our comfort zone, confronting who we truly are and finding possibilities we never thought possible before.

The experience of music in recovery can elicit both conscious and unconscious emotions (Inselmann, 2007) (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012). Through the verbal processing of the musical experience, clients can now identify and put into words emotions they were previously unaware of or unable to express. Music and creativity in recovery can break through walls that restrict their capacity for recovery (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011) (Sergio Castillo-Pérez, 2010) (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013) (de l’Etoile, 2002).

In Your Eyes

The Stars of RIR All-Star Band Keep Shining

There are a myriad of musical contributors with Rockers In Recovery (RIR) who have renewed and redefined the RIR All-Star Band – past, present, and future.  Hope and undying support are just two components of RIR that also depicts each of the musical contributors and gives them their special vitality and vigor.

For the upcoming concert in Aberdeen, Washington the musical All-Stars selected to play are Lou Esposito (Joe Walsh, The Capris), John Gianoulis (Earl Slick Band), Lee Brovitz (Cyndi Lauper, The Byrds), Tommy Zvoncheck (Formerly of Blue Oyster Cult), and Eliot Jacobs.

On the west coast this June 27th, the traveling RIR All-Stars will be playing at the D & R Theatre in Aberdeen, Washington.  September 20th is the next stop  on the recovery music trail where the All-Stars will be taking on Philadelphia at the Pro-Act Recovery Walk.  Following the walk, in RIR tradition,  the 2014 tour will close at the Gratitude Festival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on November 1, 2014.

Esposito is excited and looking forward to singing his new song, “In Your Eyes,” which he wrote this past April. The message in the song is near to his heart and very special.  Addiction is like a lightning bolt, it can strike anywhere and hit anyone – it does not pick favorites, nor does it choose to befall on any specific economic class.

Excerpt from “In Your Eyes”

Rich man, poor man, it doesn’t matter

Good family, bad family too

Let’s get this straight

It don’t discriminate

It can happen to me

It can happen to you

Helping and supporting others is the easiest task people can ever do, yet there are some people who never pick up a finger for others because of a multitude of justifications and excuses.  It is in good practice to never look down at anyone unless helping to pick that person up.  Helping and supporting people brings a balance to the human spirit and it is also two-fold.  When someone offers help to someone or something, it will come back to the person because that said person may need help at some point down the road, too.  Nobody should ever be void of help.  Just as the song “In Your Eyes” states, ‘It can happen to me, It can happen to you.’

“There is a zero degrees of separation in the music industry,” said Mark Bosch (Ian Hunter), musical All-Star contributor, “Everyone helps someone because that is how people make it in the business.”

Each concert that RIR showcases will be vibrant and fresh as the last, with musical contributors who carry the same vision and message as RIR – hope, dedication, and support.  Being a musician is much more than gigs and making money, it is a form of communication and emotion that is released from a soul level.

“Music is a religion in and of itself because it comes from within and it is an expression of the soul,” said Bosch.

As part of spreading the message of hope, it is important to recondition the social stigma of music and concerts from the old adage of “Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll” to “Hope, Love, and Rock-n-Roll,” because that is what having fun is all about.
