Rockers In Recovery – 2015 Year In Review

2015 RIR-Year In Review

Rockers In Recovery – 2015 Year In Review

Where are we without a community? A community is what helps shape who we are and gives us values and helps strengthen our beliefs. Merriam-Webster defines “Community” as: an interacting population of various kinds of individuals (as species) in a common location.

Rockers In Recovery (RIR) is a community of dedicated people who live to carry a message of hope to addicts and alcoholics and their families who all are suffering. RIR shared common goal of spreading hope and enlightenment across the country has turned out to be something RIR never expected. We are not a treatment program. RIR is an organization with the sole mission to provide prevention and education to anyone who suffers with drug addiction and alcoholism. We do this through our Free Community Addiction Educational Meet & Greets and Free Community Music Festivals/Concerts

We also help educate many through our Multiple Media addiction/education informational based websites and Social Media platforms too. It all started in January 2008 doing interviews on RIR Addiction Talk Radio and 8 years later our addiction/education message is presented through the following; live concerts and festivals, community meet & greets, social media posting, RIR & Guest blogging, articles in the RIR magazine, (in print and online), RIR Live Concert and Event Streaming. This makes it easy for our addiction/education message to reach millions of people globally with just a click of a mouse.

Education is the key to unlock the door of freedom and Rockers In Recovery is dedicated to addiction recovery education through music, news, interviews, events, and festivals taking place within our communities across the United States.  We also get to help thousands face to face at our concerts, festivals and events and here are some places over 2015 we did just that;

8 Years Of Addiction Education and Prevention Through Rock-N-Roll

 Rockers In Recovery® – Media

RIR 8Tom Coderre ,Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA -” Rockers In Recovery brings the private treatment sector, addiction education, and the addiction advocacy non-profit sector together in a unique way as no one else  is doing anywhere in the United States. What makes RIR unique, the message is all around and through the universal language of music with some great rockers of our day. They combine it with educational speakers and advocacy groups. RIR brings it all together at their community addiction education meet and greets, and addiction awareness and prevention concerts/festivals. I found as I walked around and met people today is there is a mix of families seeking help, family members of people in recovery, recovery supporters, treatment centers with their clients, the recovery community, and people from the community just coming by to see what it was all about. The one thing I have been hearing over and over is the community loved the unique message of hope. I look forward to seeing more of RIR across the United States throughout 2015 doing Addiction Awareness, Education and Prevention through Rock-N-Roll”. (Quote From 2015 Love Of Recovery music festival).

Rockers In RecoveryThank you to all of our friends and supporters for 8 years of love and support of our message of hope.  We are not a treatment center – Since January 2008 – Rockers In Recovery Radio & Productions (Rockers In Recovery – RIR) is an organization with the sole mission to provide prevention and education to anyone who suffers with drug addiction/alcoholism.  In the beginning our thought was (and still is)  “if we can just help one person” it’s worth the labor of love. Well, over the years we have been able to educate and help thousands seeking recovery from addiction.
Education is the key to unlock the door of freedom and Rockers In Recovery is dedicated to addiction recovery through music, news, interviews, events, and festivals taking place within our communities across the United States.  Multiple Media addiction/education informational based websites with lots of Social Media platforms is how we educate. This makes it easy for our addiction/education message to reach millions of people globally with just a click of a mouse and thousands face to face at our concerts, festivals and events.

Rockers In Recovery (RIR) is a community of dedicated people who live to carry a message of hope to addicts and alcoholics and their families who all are suffering. Our shared common goal to spread hope and enlightenment across the country has turned out to be something we never expected. RIR is an organization with the sole mission to provide education and help to anyone who suffers with drug addiction and alcoholism and we do it through our various platforms.

Professionals in the substance abuse field are always looking for ways to improve the therapeutic experience for their clients. Key components of achieving and maintaining recovery are: motivation, optimism, hope, and coping skills (learning how to deal with and express emotions in a healthy way). Many times, clients have a difficult time opening up, expressing, and processing their emotions. Due to having limited time with clients (often 30 days in treatment), clinicians must look for effective ways in bringing about this process as quickly as they can so they can help the client begin the process of healing. RIR does this in a way that will engage the client, capture their attention, entertain them and have such a profound impact on their life; they can carry it with them always.

The Story: RIR Musicians walk in to their festivals capturing the undivided attention of everyone at the festival. After all, this is not just a speaker coming on stage; this is musicians, guitarists and songwriters. Clients are looking forward to hearing their story and will listen intently as our musicians share their personal struggle with substance abuse and their journey to recovery. RIR musicians and friends share their experiences in a way that will make them laugh, contemplate and often times cry. When RIR does concerts/festivals they invite all the local treatment centers and IOP programs, along with sober living houses in the area to come out and experience this first hand.

Twenty One RIR Concerts and Festivals Since 2011. RIR has teamed up on a community grass roots level to help a lot over 5 years, we have gone on to produce twenty one concert and festival productions. RIR was the first recovery origination producing addiction and awareness through Rock-N-Roll at the 2012 ATP – International Tennis Championship to a NYC sold out show at the Cutting Room for the missed placed victims that were devastated from Hurricane Sandy. In addition to a benefit concert, RIR did another community event at a local Connecticut school to benefit a street-level non-profit business. RIR put together what was a benefit for the Special Olympics of South Florida and the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County.

The thinking and actions around the RIR camp are simple; educate, help people in need of help for a loved one or themselves.  RIR teams up with addiction professionals that are present at all of these shows, in order to provide answers to people seeking help. People can go right to the recovery information tent manned all day to help everyone. Each show has band and solo acts along with a list of 10 minute addiction professional speaker in between bands. RIR is educating while have fun in a fun loving environment.

We do many free community awareness and prevention concerts through Rock-N-Roll all over the United States. Some are just to name a few, the D&R Theater Aberdeen Washington, to a standing room only crowd with the same results at the luxury hotel in the heart of Las Vegas, known as the Bellagio. RIR was Rockin’ the 2014 RecoveryWalks at Penns Landing, Philadelphia, Pa. in front of 23,000 people, along with the 4th Annual RIR Music Festival in Feb 2015. RIR also donated the RIR Band & production services to the Hope All Day Festival in New Jersey 2015. This was to help raise funds for the Hope All Day Foundation.

Recovery is not only about helping yourself; it is about who you can help as well. When Hurricane Sandy struck NYC, people didn’t only just help themselves, but also recovery efforts came far and wide from many people – that is the soul of recovery, to help other people and pay it forward.

Recovery is having the power to get your life back by letting go to the aspects of life to a higher power. By relinquishing control to the things we cannot change, we realize there is more fulfillment and empowerment when we ask for help and return it by helping others in ways we can.

You CAN Have Fun in Recovery

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website

By KLEAN Treatment Centers ;

Los Angeles Drug Alcohol Treatment Rehab | KLEAN -Life in recovery can be enjoyable, full of freedom and, gasp – even fun! The good news is, you do not have to spend the hours wiling away and complaining about your new life, and wishing for fun to enter your life again. With some initiative and courage, you can have fun in recovery, doing just about anything. Here are some tips on how to bring fun into your life again:

Make a Bucket List

Now that you are sober, the sky is the limit as far as what you can do and accomplish. Make a list of 10 or 20 (or more) things you want to do now that you are sober. If you dream it, you can do it, and that is especially true now that you are sober. This list does not have to contain things that are all costly or take a lot of time. They can include things like picking up a hobby, or finishing a project or school that you could not do when you were using.

Do What You Used to Do, Sober

So many times, people say, ‘oh, I can’t do that sober,’ or, ‘I only sing karaoke when I am drunk,’ or things of that nature. The truth is, you can do all of the things you used to do and that used to bring you joy, and now you can actually remember them. So, get out there and take a salsa dancing class, join a bowling league, even get some sober friends together and sing some karaoke. If you take along your sense of humor and you give yourself a break, you will have a great time.

Travel

Often, so many people in the depths of their addiction never leave the confines of their home or neighborhood. Now that you are sober, you can use the extra funds you now have that you are not spending on drinking and drugs and take a trip. Get a group of sober friends together and go on a sober cruise, travel the country in an RV, hitting meetings along the way, or try your hand at overseas travel, connecting with sober folks in every country.

Summertime Is Concert Time

Music Prescription for a Healthier TomorrowBy Carol Harblin.

Summer is finally here, the grills have all burned off some burgers and dogs, and concert season is in the air.  Two synonymous signs of summer are that heat and music both on the rise.  Once car windows roll down, and music pours out, it’s time to start the concerts.

Rockers In Recovery (RIR) is kicking off the concert tour season this June 27, 2014 in Aberdeen, Washington, where the RIR East Coast All-Stars, Current Musical Director Lou Esposito (Joe Walsh) will be rockin’ the west coast, in addition to Casey Montana Rogers making her grand debut.

The Director of the band  engages the RIR All-Star five-piece band with the help of their Musical Contributors. The Directors then rotate in and out three Musical Contributors on each show based on their availability. This makes for a new experience each time you see the band and NOT JUST THE SAME OLD, SAME OLD.

Meet the Current RIR Musical Contributors:

Mark Bosch (Ian Hunter)

Lee Brovitz(Cyndi Lauper, The Byrds)

Eliot Jacobs(Peter Criss Band,The Capris)

Tommy Zvoncheck (Formerly of Blue Oyster Cult)

John Gianoulis (Earl Slick Band and Felix Cavaliere)

Jeff Ganz(Johnny Winter)

Graham Maby(Joe Jackson)

Kenny Aaronson (Rick Derringer)

David Shelley(Cher)

Jimmy Stowe(Jimmy Stowe and the Stowaways)

Casey Montana Rogers(Recovery Unplugged)

Unconditional support is paramount in recovery.  It isn’t just the addict who is in program, it is the whole family.  Addiction hits us all, which is why we all need to celebrate together, because each person is as significant as the other.  All of the concerts are free and open to the public because recovery is fun and meant for everyone to understand and share what it is about – unconditional love and support between the recovering addicts and the families and friends.

Aside from the music, food, and fun, there is also a connection that always follows from one RIR concert to the next, and that is recovery education and awareness.  There is always a plethora of pamphlets and handouts about rehabilitation centers as well as a variety of 12-step meeting information.

Education and awareness of recovery is essential for the public to understand because there is still much ignorance regarding recovery and addiction.  When there is ignorance, then there are still stigmas attached.  Bill W. and Dr. Bob blazed the trail several years ago, and it is up to their successors to honor their memories by continuing to educate and raise awareness of recovery, while showing the public that having fun is possible while maintaining sobriety.

Among the recovery supporters at the Aberdeen concert will be Miss Washington (Reina Almon).  Not only is recovery education and awareness the state of Washington’s platform, but it is also very near to Almon’s heart too.

“I am excited to work with Rockers In Recovery, many of my family members are afflicted with alcoholism and addiction –but it is just that, an infliction with a disease that can be overcome.  I’ve seen it happen firsthand in my family.  I have been working with ESD 113 and the Reduce Underage Drinking Coalition to help with preventative work as well,” said Almon, regarding addiction and her work with recovery awareness.

The concert in Aberdeen is one of Almon’s last appearances as Miss Washington before handing over her title that following Fourth of July weekend. Almon’s personal platform has been steadfast with sustainability and environmental issues, with aspirations of becoming an environmental attorney.   Almon plans to finish her senior year of college this fall where she is also studying for her Law School admission test (LSAT).

The folks at RIR are very excited about going to the west coast to bring hope through music and fun.

Then it’s off to PRO-ACT RECOVERY WALKS where the RIR All-Star Band will be  Rockin’ The Philly Walk. PRO-ACT Building on their  12 previous years of hosting Recovery Walks! in Philadelphia, PRO-ACT is asking you to support their 13th annual Recovery Walk on September 20, 2014. Once more, they are pleased to announce that Pro-Act. will hold it at the Great Plaza in Penn’s Landing on the beautiful waterfront.

With 20,000 participants in 2013, we’re hoping you will help us to break that record. Tell your friends about it.

Building on our 12 previous years of hosting Recovery Walks in downtown Philadelphia, PRO-ACT is asking you to support the largest walk ever assembled in support of addiction recovery—our 13th annual Recovery Walk on September 20. Once more, we are pleased to announce that it will be at the Great Plaza in Penn’s Landing on the beautiful waterfront. The are extra excited this year that they have been able to expand the Walk route through historic Philadelphia to walk past Independence Hall and extend that symbol of freedom and dignity to what recovery brings to individuals and families, thereby benefiting the community at large.

“We are so happy to have Rockers In Recovery Radio and Productions working with us on this project. We have already been inundated with inquiries about the the walk. RIR’S reach in the recovery community is huge and through their branding and marketing side of the RIR company this is going to be a great year for us. RIR’s huge network brings everyone together and  the RIR Band is just icing on the cake”. Fred Martin (Pro-Act).

Music Prescription for a Healthier Tomorrow

by Carol Harblin.

Music Prescription for a Healthier TomorrowAddiction is tough to deal with and can be arrested one day at at time, but it can be overcome.  Music helps ease those demons, and makes it easier for therapists, as well as the clients, to help understand the subconscious and those emotions that we tucked away.

Music is the life raft of an ocean liner; it saves us from drowning in a deep abyss of the sea called emotions.  No matter how many years a person is clean and sober, issues and emotions are the continual waves that surround the life raft.  Even when the waves start rocking the boat, music [our life raft] allows us to go with the rhythm and flow instead of against it.

Creating music in recovery, or any art form, helps people to release their toxic emotions in a creative and positive outlet.  In recovery, people are re-learning how to cope, again, but in constructive and healthier ways.  More often than not, many people relapse due to high levels of stress and not managing their stress effectively.  Music is not only a life raft but it becomes a constructive tool to help manage stress and reacquainting with themselves again.  Everyone goes through life trying to “find” themselves, and in recovery they have to reacquaint themselves all over again but with a positive perspective and outlook.

Meditation is an extremely useful and practical tool to use in recovery.  It allows the mind and body to get back to center.  Focusing your mind on your breath within the moment you are in is not only liberating but offers clarity and relaxation.  Think about the last cigarette you just smoked, what were you actually doing?  I am not disputing nicotine addiction, but consider this.  In order to smoke a cigarette you have to take in deep breaths and hold then release – sounds like deep breathing exercises to me.  The initial attraction to cigarettes may not be the cigarette, but the breath that we take within those few minutes it takes to finish the cigarette.  Meditation does not have to be in a class nor does it have to be an hour or a half an hour.  Meditation can last as long as we desire and as brief as five minutes.  Meditation makes up an allotted amount of time devoted to breathing and focusing on our breath and our present moment.  People feel that music helps the meditation process because it helps them focus on their breath and listen to something other than their breathing.

Music is beneficial with every phase of life.  Music therapy even positively affects the brain chemistry in Alzheimer’s disease, and even for those who are in treatment for cancer.  Studies have shown that music helps the effectiveness of the cancer treatments.  Recreational therapists in nursing homes and hospitals incorporate music into their monthly schedule to increase the productivity of the residents and patients.

Mental Exercise:

1.  Where do you feel most relaxed?  Before you get out of your car before going inside the store, work, home, church, etc, close your eyes and take in a few breaths.

How do you feel?

Observe your inner calm.

2.  Play your favorite song, open a notebook and manually write your thoughts and your observations of how you feel while that song is being played.

Now play a song that does not resonate with you, and record your thoughts and feelings while that song is played.

Music Therapy In Recovery

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website

Carol Harblin Rockin’ Magazine Writer

Carol Harblin Rockin’ Magazine Writer

THE POWER OF MUSIC Music is a magical creation that has been part of everyone’s lives for as long as musical instruments and phonographs have been in existence. Music has indirectly shaped our lives in such profound ways that it is difficult to see life without it, yet it is vastly taken for granted.

Music has the magical power to reach far beyond our subconscious and hit emotional chords we didn’t even realize was there. It has powerful influences on emotions and moods. Listening to a happy song can lift people’s spirits while some tunes can lead the individual to feelings of despair. The thing that makes music so special is that it allows people to communicate their moods, in some way. It can be difficult to explain a mood to other people, but music can express it exactly. There are many claims made for the power of music, and there is growing scientific evidence to back some of these. Music therapy has been shown to help people manage deal better with a variety of conditions. There is also good evidence to suggest that it will help those individuals who are trying to build a life away from addiction.

Two forms of communication expressed from music are dance and by singing. People are free when they are alone in their cars as they drive down the freeway to one of their happy songs. They are transported into that song and even find themselves singing along to it. We all fall under its spell each time we hear those rhythmic beats. Even if we cannot carry a tune, we still become spellbound in a few brief moments where we find ourselves singing along.

Ever notice how music has a way of moving our bodies along with those musical rhythms? Dancing can be even more liberating than singing because when we move along to our favorite tunes we are also boosting our endorphins in our brains. Physical activity naturally releases a healthy chemical in our brains that allows us to maintain a positive and happy well-being.

Music therapy can be defined as the “clinical and evidence-based use of music to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship.” It involves using music to help people manage physical, emotional, or cognitive problems. The client can interact with the music in different ways such as listening, singing, or dancing to the beat. They can also write songs or discuss lyrics.

D & R Theatre - 205 South I St. Aberdeen, Wa. 98520Formal music therapy involves using the magic and power of music in an environment where clients are being observed and helped as they express themselves in their own way of communication. The music therapist is trained to in how to use music effectively. They can use their knowledge to decide on the exact course of treatment that will work best for each client. When they first meet the client the goals of treatment will be established, and this will guide their efforts. The therapy may involve some type of music creation or it could be just listening.

We all learn, absorb, and communicate differently so that means we respond and express ourselves differently with music. Some people would find drawing or painting a better way of expressing their emotions, whereas another person finds they are more expressive with the written word. The music therapist must work with each client individually to find out which form of communication is most effective when releasing their emotions and feelings that have been dissociated for a long time.

Music is capable of reaching people far beyond any way we could ever realize. Music is capable of transporting us to a place that makes us feel better in a time that was easier for us. Life is not always a picnic on a blue sky day; sometimes we need a little music to help us through those rainy days as well.

Activity with a friend or a group:

Find a song from every genre that resonates with you and either vocalize or write down how your emotions respond and what sort of memory arises.

From Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr, Glenn Miller Band, to Charlie Daniels and Garth Brooks and Mozart to Metallica – there is always a song that takes our breath away and transforms our memories.

Benefit From Music In Recovery

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website

Since 2008 Rockers In Recovery (RIR) was created to provide support for people and their families suffering from all forms of addiction.  The RIR goal is that  through music we can provide education on addiction, as well as, treatment options.  We initiate and develop opportunities that encourage interaction between Rockers In Recovery and our fellow friends in recovery. This helps us all to maintain meaningful and rewarding connection to our community’s.

RIR does this through the following:

“Rockers In Recovery  ” and The Rockers In Recovery All-Star Band: The RIR All Stars  combine cream of the crop musicians that are in recovery or support recovery.  This makes for some serious good time dance music and some good old Rock and Roll.  We also invite other musicians that are in recovery or support recovery to help carry our message of hope through music.  Their musical talent makes them RECOVERY all stars.  Most importantly the message of “Rockers In Recovery Live Concert Series” is that treatment and education mixed with “HAVING FUN” in recovery is indeed possible!!

Benefit From Music In Recovery:

If people hope to benefit from music in recovery there are a number of things worth considering:

* It is not necessary for people to have any type of musical ability in order to benefit from this experience. They may not even like music very much to begin with.

* Music can be of benefit to people young and old.

* It is possible for the individual to create their own playlist of therapeutic music by adding those tracks that they found soothing.

* There is no right sound for relaxation. Some people will feel relaxed while listening to classical music but for other people it could be classic rock, punk, and all other styles of music.

* It is a good idea to keep a journal in order to record how different types of music impact mood and feelings of relaxation. This way the individual will discover the music that works best for them.

* If people are having difficulties concentrating they may wish to try music with a fast beat to see if this helps.

* Music can be a wonderful tool to help people exercise. These tracks can motivate and encourage the individual to pick up the tempo of their activity.

* Meditation music can help the individual experience meditative states. It is not a good idea to use music long-term for meditation because it becomes too much as a crutch and can prevent the individual from advancing along this path.

* Simple drumming is a relatively easy thing for people to learn. This type of music creativity can be good for escaping pain and emotional turmoil.

* Learning to play a musical instrument can be a great choice for new people in recovery. As well as this being entertaining it will also be a great stress reducer.

* Music can be used to bring a message of recovery to our communities as a whole. The Rockers In Recovery goal is to provide education and support about addiction, as well as, treatment options. We initiate and develop opportunities that encourage interaction between Rockers In Recovery and our fellow friends in recovery. This helps us all to maintain meaningful and rewarding connection to our community’s. RIR does this through the following.

I have been a main sponsor for Rockers In Recovery for the last two months and have been quite impressed with John Hollis and Rockers In Recovery’s ability to promote and spread my message to so many individuals. It has been fantastic to see it happen in real time. In the past I’ve spent money with no ROI not the case with RIR.

RIR and their staff  have exceeded all of my expectations. I have new clients, new media contacts, new followers that are real they engage with me all the time, my book sales are up, my phone contacts and  website visits have increased directly because of my main sponsorship with RIR.

RIR is very refreshing to work with they are very transparent, honest, helpful, and you can get them when you need them. I would highly recommend RIR for your marketing and branding needs.

I would like to express my gratitude to Rockers In Recovery for your help and the work you do for others as well.

Sincerely,

RIR and SAMHSA Partner to Increase Awareness that Prevention Works

Rockers in Recovery is supporting SAMHSA’s third annual National Prevention Week 2014, a health observance to increase public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion.  From May 18-24, this week-long observance is an opportunity to join with individuals, organizations, and coalitions in communities across the country to promote prevention efforts, educate others about substance use and mental health, and create and strengthen community partnerships.  Last year, hundreds of prevention-themed events attracted thousands of participants across the United States to raise awareness of behavioral health issues, change lives, and improve the health of their communities.

This year, the National Prevention Week theme is Our Lives. Our Health. Our Future. Six days during the week focus on a specific behavioral health topic to raise awareness about these issues:

  • May 18:  Prevention and Cessation of Tobacco Use

  • May 19:  Prevention of Underage Drinking

  • May 20:  Prevention of Prescription Drug Abuse and Marijuana Use

  • May 21:  Prevention of Alcohol Abuse

  • May 22:  Prevention of Suicide

  • May 23:  Promotion of Mental Health

RIR and SAMHSA invite you to participate in National Prevention Week 2014!

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Get in the spirit: watch the National Prevention Week 2014 promotional video. Share the video link and spread the word!

  • Commit to a healthy lifestyle by taking the Prevention Pledge, and encourage friends and family to do the same.

  • Add the power of your voice to SAMHSA’s 2014 “I Choose” photo project. Visit www.samhsa.gov/prevention-week to learn how you and others can participate.

  • Find out about events taking place in your state or territory during National Prevention Week 2014.

  • Collaborate with others in your community to implement strategies and programs to prevent alcohol abuse and illicit drug use and promote mental health.

10 Year History of RIR

Since 2008 Rockers In Recovery® – Where Recovery Education Information
and Rock-N-Roll Come Together:

Rockers In Recovery® - Addiction Recovery Media

250_250_312949_1216558John Hollis (John), Founder of Rockers In Recovery, was born in the mid-1960s, between a devastating presidential assassination of John F. Kennedy (JFK) and one of the most famous musical festivals of the era known as Woodstock. John grew up in a small town of Poughquag, New York, just two hours north of New York City. The youngest of three boys John’s mother and father divorced when John was seven years old.

During this time, John was left with his father and one of his brothers. Being a single parent is difficult enough, but to have a wife leave her family it can create many challenges and try the patience of even the best of Saints. His father did the best he could with what he had with his sons, while working a full-time job. Being a single dad as well as an adult child of an alcoholic can create challenges and can make coping unmanageable, especially when his abilities to cope are strained due to lack of coping skills.

John’s home life became out of control and unmanageable throughout the 1970s. One of John’s brothers is seven years older, and the eldest brother is fourteen years older than him. Between 1951 and 1964 John’s mother had several miscarriages in between the three brothers which is why there are many years between each brother. From a very early age with all the family dysfunction going on around him, John isolated a lot. He found safety with his Aunt Marge and Uncle Blackie his cousins Vince,Bo and Pat in New Jersey as well as his oldest brother Joe when he was home in NY. Over the next few years of his childhood, he became a victim of sexual and physical abuse. Disciplinary problems began increase within his family life, school and his community.

RIR_HistoryJohn’s threshold for dysfunction came to a head and at the tender age of 11-years-old he smoked his first joint and drank his first beer. This was the only form of coping he knew. The after effect of smoking a joint and beer had made him feel a peace for the first time in a very long time. It numbed him from the pain he felt from his messy life. Getting high was the answer he was looking for, so he thought. He thought it was the magic pill to curing a messy life. At the age of 13, he sniffed out his first experience of cocaine, the effects made him feel much different than the pot and the alcohol; it made him feel more alive and elated that he chased those feelings for the next 30 years.

Hitting a bottom comes without warning and when least expected. The next 30 years brought countless jail time, detox centers, treatment centers, in addition to the loss of his whole family. He went on to have two divorces and three children from two relationships. John was becoming increasingly more lost and more out of control, the more he continued coping in his negative ways.

He never was taught or was instilled with trust; therefore, he had many trust issues. With a mom leaving and not having anyone he could turn to because everyone around him appeared too busy, it did not send him off into the world with a limitless amount of trust in people. Because he felt he could not trust anyone, he thought it was only him against the whole world. If his whole life didn’t fit in a hefty bag he wanted nothing to do with it. Settling was not an option. His life was ricocheting from one catastrophe into another with only vision of negativity – Drugs, anger, hate, and getting through life by whatever means necessary was his pathway. After realizing that leaving high school at 16-years-old with only a ninth grade education left his opportunities limited, he studied for his General Education Diploma (GED) and then started working for the telecom and construction industry through 2004. In 1993, he moved to Miami, Florida because he wanted to be closer to the cocaine.

This period of his life was all about daily substance abuse, as much as he could get. His benders were lasting weeks into months. He began to hit the streets where he loved the feeling of being alone. Being alone was something he found solace in since his recluse childhood growing up with a family too busy to hang around with him. He became homeless and actually liked it…or so he thought. He did not have a home, because he wasn’t given the example of how to uphold one, so he made his world his home. John had his own pay phone on the corner of 79th and Biscayne Blvd. Where he would receive and place phone calls. He would panhandle to use and vice versa. In 2006, he slept under a bridge on 79th Street in Miami after another failed recovery attempt he sat next to a 12-step club in Miami.

The epiphany of “WOW you did this to yourself no one else did.” John went into a meeting and picked up a white chip. He then called a friend and asked if he could stay at his sober living house in Pompano Beach. John had been a resident there off and on since 2002.

Hence 2008, John’s Vision:

Gratitude Sweeps the Recovery Festival

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

Boundless Energy and Gratitude Sweeps the Festival, Again

The recovery process is a gradual step-by-step process.  With recovery, it takes a large portion of patience and an even greater serving of faith; just as it takes infinite patience and grace to follow through with the Festival of Gratitude.  November is gratitude month, and November 2, 2013 kicked off Rockers In Recovery’s 3rd annual festival of gratitude.

RIR has much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.  Not only is there boundless gratitude for everyone who participated and came to the festival, but for both Destination Hope and Sunrise Detox, both treatment facilities who have sponsored and supported RIR success through the past several years.

On November 2nd.  Great music rolled out all day starting with The Crude Brood, Crush Band, Doug Hirsch and Friends, Fat Chance, Sooner or Later Band, Keep Coming Back Band, Jimmy Stowe & the Stowaways, Johnny B. and the Road Dogs. Each one of the bands that played at the festival all rocked with top-notch energy than ever before.

Every stage that the RIR All-Star band rocks out on proves that energy increases with every year of recovery.  Each musician makes their instrument effortless to play and makes the audience scream for more.

The Festival of Gratitude took an enormous amount of work, just like recovery, and when everyone comes together sharing their love it makes all the blood, sweat and tears worth it.  There was a meet and greet session the night before the festival where Lori Sullivan, director and founder of RIR, sang her praises to her family of RIR for all their help and support.  Meet and greet sessions are a special time where people can meet each of the band members of RIR All-Star band and show their gratitude and appreciation.

Fest day the music came off the stage with perfection. Veteran stage manger Chopper Kovach and veteran guitar tech Daniel Garber who both work for the who’s who of Rock & Roll made it look easy. John Delarenzo of On Stage Productions worked for three days to make it all happen.

Community restaurant owners Jamie and Rebecca  McDonnell came in to the festival with a passion like it was there own. His origination DelVecchio’s headed up all the food vendors. Jamie’s hard work made this years festival a great smash with some great eats.

Broward County Sheriff Scott and wife Susan Israel, Captain Ira Goldberg BSO, Rick and Rita Case, Ira Levy, Ben Brafman, Joe McDonnell, Rebecca McDonnell, Robin West, Scott Armbuster, Naomi Fabricant,Leslie Glass, CB Smith Park along with RIR Co Founder, Lori Sullivan truly had the fest come together without too many bumps in the road.

Richie Supa’s  RIR Unplugged began the festival and the RIR All-Star closed the celebration.  The entire day was filled with nonstop musical energy, including the recovery comedian Steve Johnson.

I got to meet some very cool people from the recovery community that work as hard as RIR when it comes to caring a message of hope. Reach Out Recovery, In The Rooms,Faces and Voices, Young People In Recovery Foundation,12 Palms Recovery Center and Clearbrook Treatment Centers of PA. Not counting the artists displaying some very cool art.

These guys are the best, if you are looking for an event that will bring people together to celebrate and enjoy the fellowship of recovery this is your group.

Top musicians, excellent programming, highly organized. you will not find a better group of musicians and organizers than this.

Jeanie R.

My boyfriend and I are both in recovery. We had never experienced anything like the RIR Festival previously. We both had such an amazing time.

I would love to become more involved in anything recovery based, especially things like what y’all are doing.

Please feel free to let me know if there are any service opportunities available. I stay pretty busy with work and raising my kiddos. But they are also being raised “in the rooms” so they might even be able to help as well.

I hope you have a blessed weekend!!!

Thanks again for all that you and the whole RIR gang do. You have touched my life in a profound way!!!
