Tim McGraw – Bitterness keeps you from flyin’

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

rsz_6692ab3974927bc866421ea4a60ecc50_1.jpgBy John Hollis RIR Co-Founder – Addiction Recovery is more than just not using, we have to take on a new way of thinking and living. There are times I’ve lost focus of this. Letting the fear and resentments of the day clog the channel to my spirit can stifle my helping others. So getting some alone time and looking at my behaviors, my attitudes, my motives, and how I’m treating others is very important to my recovery. One of the ways I get grounded, I Listen to music.

Videos like Tim McGraw’s – Humble And Kind, Written by Lori Mckenna is one of those songs that helps me to see what’s important, the  song gives me hope, and it also gives me a kind of sober running beacon in real time to check against my self-centered desires. Music is one of my recovery tools and videos like Humble and Kind helps me to ask myself, how am I living my life today?

One part of the lyrics I love the most is;
“Don’t expect a free ride from no one
Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why:
Bitterness keeps you from flyin’
Always stay humble and kind”

Check out the video, let me know your thoughts?

Tim McGraw – The country star gets candid about his past dependence on “liquid courage” and what was at stake if he didn’t get sober. Huffington Post – 08/26/2015

“You can come up with a million excuses why you drink too much,” he said. “Lack of confidence, the success that came so quickly, and then some of the things you didn’t realize was trauma, I guess, back when you were 11… I think the older you get, the more you start realizing those things.”

As time went on, McGraw came to the harsh realization for himself.

“It got to the point where I knew that I drank too much,” he said. “I knew that it was affecting my personal relationships, it was affecting my professional relationships, it was affecting my family. It was turning me into a person that I didn’t want to be… I was at a point where I could lose everything that I had in my life, first and foremost, my family. It [was] time to stop. And I stopped.”

Sober since 2008, the night before embarking on another tour, McGraw said he had his last drink. “ I flew to Florida that morning from being wasted the night before, and started that tour. Haven’t drank since.” Read more @ How Tim McGraw’s Drinking Nearly Cost Him Everything

8 Years Of Addiction Education and Prevention Through Rock-N-Roll

 Rockers In Recovery® – Media

RIR 8Tom Coderre ,Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA -” Rockers In Recovery brings the private treatment sector, addiction education, and the addiction advocacy non-profit sector together in a unique way as no one else  is doing anywhere in the United States. What makes RIR unique, the message is all around and through the universal language of music with some great rockers of our day. They combine it with educational speakers and advocacy groups. RIR brings it all together at their community addiction education meet and greets, and addiction awareness and prevention concerts/festivals. I found as I walked around and met people today is there is a mix of families seeking help, family members of people in recovery, recovery supporters, treatment centers with their clients, the recovery community, and people from the community just coming by to see what it was all about. The one thing I have been hearing over and over is the community loved the unique message of hope. I look forward to seeing more of RIR across the United States throughout 2015 doing Addiction Awareness, Education and Prevention through Rock-N-Roll”. (Quote From 2015 Love Of Recovery music festival).

Rockers In RecoveryThank you to all of our friends and supporters for 8 years of love and support of our message of hope.  We are not a treatment center – Since January 2008 – Rockers In Recovery Radio & Productions (Rockers In Recovery – RIR) is an organization with the sole mission to provide prevention and education to anyone who suffers with drug addiction/alcoholism.  In the beginning our thought was (and still is)  “if we can just help one person” it’s worth the labor of love. Well, over the years we have been able to educate and help thousands seeking recovery from addiction.
Education is the key to unlock the door of freedom and Rockers In Recovery is dedicated to addiction recovery through music, news, interviews, events, and festivals taking place within our communities across the United States.  Multiple Media addiction/education informational based websites with lots of Social Media platforms is how we educate. It all started in January 2008 doing interviews on RIR Addiction Talk Radio and 8 years later our addiction/education message is presented through the following; live concerts and festivals, community meet & greets, social media posting, RIR & Guest blogging, articles in the RIR magazine, (in print and online), RIR Live Concert and Event Streaming. This makes it easy for our addiction/education message to reach millions of people globally with just a click of a mouse and thousands face to face at our concerts, festivals and events.

Rockers In Recovery (RIR) is a community of dedicated people who live to carry a message of hope to addicts and alcoholics and their families who all are suffering. Our shared common goal to spread hope and enlightenment across the country has turned out to be something we never expected. RIR is an organization with the sole mission to provide education and help to anyone who suffers with drug addiction and alcoholism and we do it through our various platforms.

Professionals in the substance abuse field are always looking for ways to improve the therapeutic experience for their clients. Key components of achieving and maintaining recovery are: motivation, optimism, hope, and coping skills (learning how to deal with and express emotions in a healthy way). Many times, clients have a difficult time opening up, expressing, and processing their emotions. Due to having limited time with clients (often 30 days in treatment), clinicians must look for effective ways in bringing about this process as quickly as they can so they can help the client begin the process of healing. RIR does this in a way that will engage the client, capture their attention, entertain them and have such a profound impact on their life; they can carry it with them always.

The Story: RIR Musicians walk in to their festivals capturing the undivided attention of everyone at the festival. After all, this is not just a speaker coming on stage; this is musicians, guitarists and songwriters. Clients are looking forward to hearing their story and will listen intently as our musicians share their personal struggle with substance abuse and their journey to recovery. RIR musicians and friends share their experiences in a way that will make them laugh, contemplate and often times cry. When RIR does concerts/festivals they invite all the local treatment centers and IOP programs, along with sober living houses in the area to come out and experience this first hand.

Twenty One RIR Concerts and Festivals Since 2011. RIR has teamed up on a community grass roots level to help a lot over 5 years, we have gone on to produce twenty one concert and festival productions. RIR was the first recovery origination producing addiction and awareness through Rock-N-Roll at the 2012 ATP – International Tennis Championship to a NYC sold out show at the Cutting Room for the missed placed victims that were devastated from Hurricane Sandy. In addition to a benefit concert, RIR did another community event at a local Connecticut school to benefit a street-level non-profit business. RIR put together what was a benefit for the Special Olympics of South Florida and the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County.

The thinking and actions around the RIR camp are simple; educate, help people in need of help for a loved one or themselves.  RIR teams up with addiction professionals that are present at all of these shows, in order to provide answers to people seeking help. People can go right to the recovery information tent manned all day to help everyone. Each show has band and solo acts along with a list of 10 minute addiction professional speaker in between bands. RIR is educating while have fun in a fun loving environment.

We do many free community awareness and prevention concerts through Rock-N-Roll all over the United States. Some are just to name a few, the D&R Theater Aberdeen Washington, to a standing room only crowd with the same results at the luxury hotel in the heart of Las Vegas, known as the Bellagio. RIR was Rockin’ the 2014 RecoveryWalks at Penns Landing, Philadelphia, Pa. in front of 23,000 people, along with the 4th Annual RIR Music Festival in Feb 2015. RIR also donated the RIR Band & production services to the Hope All Day Festival in New Jersey 2015. This was to help raise funds for the Hope All Day Foundation.

Recovery is not only about helping yourself; it is about who you can help as well. When Hurricane Sandy struck NYC, people didn’t only just help themselves, but also recovery efforts came far and wide from many people – that is the soul of recovery, to help other people and pay it forward.

Recovery is having the power to get your life back by letting go to the aspects of life to a higher power. By relinquishing control to the things we cannot change, we realize there is more fulfillment and empowerment when we ask for help and return it by helping others in ways we can.

Addiction Recovery and Rock Stars

Live In Chicago At The Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival

Addiction Recovery  is not an unknown status for some rock stars. The world of rock and roll has certainly seen its fair share of addiction and substance abuse. In fact, drugs, alcohol and other risky behaviors are not only common among musicians; sometimes the entertainment industry makes it seem that they are celebrated! However, there are many rock stars that have kicked their habits and are now in recovery from addiction.

The following rock stars may have been drawn into the world of drugs and alcohol, but now use their talent and support from friends, family and fans as methods of relapse prevention.

Addiction Recovery and Rock Stars

1. Elton John  Elton John AIDS Foundation
Sir Elton has been pretty vocal about his past substance abuse, citing cocaine and alcohol as his drugs of choice during the 1970′s and 80′s. Elton claims to have consumed “massive quantities” of drugs and alcohol, and has even said he’s surprised to still be alive. Sir Elton entered recovery and has been sober since 1990, and uses the support of his husband, family and friends as relapse prevention.

2. Eric Clapton   The Breeze
The music legend says kicking heroin and alcohol saved his career, and his life. In past music news from Clapton’s interviews, he says that he would never have survived to make albums like the upcoming release Old Sock and The Breeze if he hadn’t sobered up. “I thought that if I stopped drinking and I stopped using drugs…I would not be able to play anymore. In other words, those were things that were necessary for inspiration,” he says. “But it was a shortcut.

My experience now tells me in a long time of being in recovery, that I can be a good musician with or without that philosophy.” The height of Clapton’s heroin use came in the early ’70s, and he passed out during the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden. He kicked heroin later in that decade, but then turned to alcohol, before finally getting sober once and for all in 1986.

He has since demonstrated a longstanding commitment to recovery, holding benefit concerts for Crossroads, the treatment center he helped to found in Antigua. “It’s a gift I’ve been given and the best way to honor it is to stay clean and sober to be able to do it as well as I can,” he says. “I wouldn’t be here today—I’d probably be dead—if I hadn’t gotten straight.”

3. Lou Reed        Heroin
The late Lou Reed solo artist and former Velvet Underground front man was known for his heavy heroin and cocaine usage. In fact, many of songs are centered on drugs and the addict lifestyle. However, Reed became sober and has spent over 30 years in recovery. Reed cites songwriting, performing and the love and support of his wife and fans as his methods of staying clean and his older songs for caring his message of recovery in his own way.

4. Keith Richards   Sister Morphine
Keith Richards, lead guitarist for The Rolling Stones, was once so influenced by drugs and alcohol that he’s since become the poster child for addiction and how it relates to the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. After incurring various drug charges and suffering several near-overdoses, Richards decided to quit the hard stuff. He furthered his sobriety by giving up alcohol in 2010.  Keith has been Rockin Recovery ever since. Maybe now he’ll be a poster child for addiction recovery.

5. Slash    Slash Talks recovery
The Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver guitarist is no stranger to addiction. In recent years, Slash has opened up about his addiction to heroin and how it affected both his personal and private life and how he lives in recovery. The extremely talented musician has described how, at first, heroin was a great comfort to him, but quickly came to consume his every thought and action. Currently, Slash is clean and sober, and cites his wife, sons and other sober musicians as his greatest tools of relapse prevention.

Although these now musicians in recovery nearly destroyed their lives with drugs and alcohol, they managed to break the cycle of addiction and continue to flourish in their careers. The message here is simple: if these guys can kick their habits and find success in recovery, so can you! Most importantly the  is that treatment and education mixed with ”HAVING FUN” in recovery is indeed possible!!

In Your Eyes

The Stars of RIR All-Star Band Keep Shining

By Carol Harblin;

Carol Harblin -Rockin' Writer

Carol Harblin -Rockin’ Writer

There are a myriad of musical contributors with Rockers In Recovery (RIR) who have renewed and redefined the RIR All-Star Band – past, present, and future.  Hope and undying support are just two components of RIR that also depicts each of the musical contributors and gives them their special vitality and vigor.

For the upcoming concert in Aberdeen, Washington the musical All-Stars selected to play are Lou Esposito (Joe Walsh, The Capris), John Gianoulis (Earl Slick Band), Lee Brovitz (Cyndi Lauper, The Byrds), Tommy Zvoncheck (Formerly of Blue Oyster Cult), and Eliot Jacobs.

On the west coast this June 27th, the traveling RIR All-Stars will be playing at the D & R Theatre in Aberdeen, Washington.  September 20th is the next stop  on the recovery music trail where the All-Stars will be taking on Philadelphia at the Pro-Act Recovery Walk.  Following the walk, in RIR tradition,  the 2014 tour will close at the Gratitude Festival in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on November 1, 2014.

Esposito is excited and looking forward to singing his new song, “In Your Eyes,” which he wrote this past April. The message in the song is near to his heart and very special.  Addiction is like a lightning bolt, it can strike anywhere and hit anyone – it does not pick favorites, nor does it choose to befall on any specific economic class.

Excerpt from “In Your Eyes”

Rich man, poor man, it doesn’t matter

Good family, bad family too

Let’s get this straight

It don’t discriminate

It can happen to me

It can happen to you

Helping and supporting others is the easiest task people can ever do, yet there are some people who never pick up a finger for others because of a multitude of justifications and excuses.  It is in good practice to never look down at anyone unless helping to pick that person up.  Helping and supporting people brings a balance to the human spirit and it is also two-fold.  When someone offers help to someone or something, it will come back to the person because that said person may need help at some point down the road, too.  Nobody should ever be void of help.  Just as the song “In Your Eyes” states, ‘It can happen to me, It can happen to you.’

“There is a zero degrees of separation in the music industry,” said Mark Bosch (Ian Hunter), musical All-Star contributor, “Everyone helps someone because that is how people make it in the business.”

Each concert that RIR showcases will be vibrant and fresh as the last, with musical contributors who carry the same vision and message as RIR – hope, dedication, and support.  Being a musician is much more than gigs and making money, it is a form of communication and emotion that is released from a soul level.

“Music is a religion in and of itself because it comes from within and it is an expression of the soul,” said Bosch.

As part of spreading the message of hope, it is important to recondition the social stigma of music and concerts from the old adage of “Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll” to “Hope, Love, and Rock-n-Roll,” because that is what having fun is all about.

Summertime Is Concert Time

Music Prescription for a Healthier TomorrowBy Carol Harblin.

Summer is finally here, the grills have all burned off some burgers and dogs, and concert season is in the air.  Two synonymous signs of summer are that heat and music both on the rise.  Once car windows roll down, and music pours out, it’s time to start the concerts.

Rockers In Recovery (RIR) is kicking off the concert tour season this June 27, 2014 in Aberdeen, Washington, where the RIR East Coast All-Stars, Current Musical Director Lou Esposito (Joe Walsh) will be rockin’ the west coast, in addition to Casey Montana Rogers making her grand debut.

The Director of the band  engages the RIR All-Star five-piece band with the help of their Musical Contributors. The Directors then rotate in and out three Musical Contributors on each show based on their availability. This makes for a new experience each time you see the band and NOT JUST THE SAME OLD, SAME OLD.

Meet the Current RIR Musical Contributors:

Mark Bosch (Ian Hunter)

Lee Brovitz(Cyndi Lauper, The Byrds)

Eliot Jacobs(Peter Criss Band,The Capris)

Tommy Zvoncheck (Formerly of Blue Oyster Cult)

John Gianoulis (Earl Slick Band and Felix Cavaliere)

Jeff Ganz(Johnny Winter)

Graham Maby(Joe Jackson)

Kenny Aaronson (Rick Derringer)

David Shelley(Cher)

Jimmy Stowe(Jimmy Stowe and the Stowaways)

Casey Montana Rogers(Recovery Unplugged)

Unconditional support is paramount in recovery.  It isn’t just the addict who is in program, it is the whole family.  Addiction hits us all, which is why we all need to celebrate together, because each person is as significant as the other.  All of the concerts are free and open to the public because recovery is fun and meant for everyone to understand and share what it is about – unconditional love and support between the recovering addicts and the families and friends.

Aside from the music, food, and fun, there is also a connection that always follows from one RIR concert to the next, and that is recovery education and awareness.  There is always a plethora of pamphlets and handouts about rehabilitation centers as well as a variety of 12-step meeting information.

Education and awareness of recovery is essential for the public to understand because there is still much ignorance regarding recovery and addiction.  When there is ignorance, then there are still stigmas attached.  Bill W. and Dr. Bob blazed the trail several years ago, and it is up to their successors to honor their memories by continuing to educate and raise awareness of recovery, while showing the public that having fun is possible while maintaining sobriety.

Among the recovery supporters at the Aberdeen concert will be Miss Washington (Reina Almon).  Not only is recovery education and awareness the state of Washington’s platform, but it is also very near to Almon’s heart too.

“I am excited to work with Rockers In Recovery, many of my family members are afflicted with alcoholism and addiction –but it is just that, an infliction with a disease that can be overcome.  I’ve seen it happen firsthand in my family.  I have been working with ESD 113 and the Reduce Underage Drinking Coalition to help with preventative work as well,” said Almon, regarding addiction and her work with recovery awareness.

The concert in Aberdeen is one of Almon’s last appearances as Miss Washington before handing over her title that following Fourth of July weekend. Almon’s personal platform has been steadfast with sustainability and environmental issues, with aspirations of becoming an environmental attorney.   Almon plans to finish her senior year of college this fall where she is also studying for her Law School admission test (LSAT).

The folks at RIR are very excited about going to the west coast to bring hope through music and fun.

Then it’s off to PRO-ACT RECOVERY WALKS where the RIR All-Star Band will be  Rockin’ The Philly Walk. PRO-ACT Building on their  12 previous years of hosting Recovery Walks! in Philadelphia, PRO-ACT is asking you to support their 13th annual Recovery Walk on September 20, 2014. Once more, they are pleased to announce that Pro-Act. will hold it at the Great Plaza in Penn’s Landing on the beautiful waterfront.

With 20,000 participants in 2013, we’re hoping you will help us to break that record. Tell your friends about it.

Building on our 12 previous years of hosting Recovery Walks in downtown Philadelphia, PRO-ACT is asking you to support the largest walk ever assembled in support of addiction recovery—our 13th annual Recovery Walk on September 20. Once more, we are pleased to announce that it will be at the Great Plaza in Penn’s Landing on the beautiful waterfront. The are extra excited this year that they have been able to expand the Walk route through historic Philadelphia to walk past Independence Hall and extend that symbol of freedom and dignity to what recovery brings to individuals and families, thereby benefiting the community at large.

“We are so happy to have Rockers In Recovery Radio and Productions working with us on this project. We have already been inundated with inquiries about the the walk. RIR’S reach in the recovery community is huge and through their branding and marketing side of the RIR company this is going to be a great year for us. RIR’s huge network brings everyone together and  the RIR Band is just icing on the cake”. Fred Martin (Pro-Act).

ADDICTION TREATMENT IS BUILT ON A FAULTY FOUNDATION

by Jack Kelly, CAP, NLP, LHMP.

Message For The Day - May 29A conundrum (co-nun-drum) is a riddle which requires ingenuity in answering and discovering its meaning. So, here’s a conundrum about addiction and recovery. After the original members of A.A. admitted that they were powerless over alcohol, they set the following goal:

“We were willing to go to any lengths to achieve victory over alcohol.”

How could they achieve victory over something they were powerless over?

To find the answer to this riddle we must first make a distinction between one, the substance, and two, our addiction to the substance. Regarding one, the substance, if we don’t put the substance, alcohol or drugs, inside our bodies, we don’t become powerless.

Here’s the wisdom of the “message” passed on to us by the original members of A.A:

“We know that while the alcoholic keeps away from drink as he may do for months or years, he reacts much like other men. We are equally positive that once he takes any alcohol whatever into his system – something happens, both in the bodily and mental sense, which makes it virtually impossible for him to stop. The experience of any alcoholic will abundantly confirm this.” (A.A. Page 22)

What’s the point? The whole concept of powerlessness relates to our body; not our will-power, mind or emotions. They are distinct and separate issues. They come under the heading of lack of power.  If we don’t put these addictive substances inside our bodies, we don’t’ become powerless. The one thing we will never recover as alcoholics and drug addicts is – the ability to safely put alcohol, or any other mind altering drug, inside our body. Why? Because something happens, mentally and physically which makes it impossible for us to stop.” What is the “something” that happens? The cravings kick in; then, our brain gets high-jacked. We lose all access to rational thought, the love we have for our spouses, partners, children, and families, as well as our spiritual beliefs and moral values.”

Then, what is it that the original members of A.A. achieved victory over? They achieved victory over their addiction to the substances that created so much pain and suffering in their lives.  They achieved victory over the obsessive thoughts, compulsive feelings, and physical cravings that kept them reaching out for a pill, drink, or illegal drug. “The problem has been removed. It does not exist for us.”  Now here’s the catch. They tell us that it will only stay removed “so long as – we stay in fit spiritual condition.” (A.A. Page 85)

Narcotics Anonymous and many of the treatment centers in the U.S. that provide treatment for millions of alcoholics and drug addicts have a very significant problem. They are built on a faulty foundation. They fail to separate one from two; the substance, and our addiction to the substance. Step 1 of Narcotics Anonymous states: “We admitted we were powerless over our addiction.”

Jack Kelly About Lazarus House

Jack Kelly, CAP, NLP, LHMP

Here’s another conundrum. If we are “powerless” over our addiction, why should we bother seeking help or treatment? If the solution found by the original members of A.A. was offered to newcomers, perhaps they could find what the original members of A.A. found: “We found the Great Reality(God/Higher Power)  deep down within us.”  (A.A. Page 55)

The faulty foundation goes beyond separating one, the substance, from two, our addiction to the substance. Instead of being advised to go “deep down within,” today, many newcomers in N.A. and A.A. are often told to look outside themselves for a solution to their problem; that they can find the Great Reality(God/Higher Power) in chairs, empty shoe boxes, doorknobs, or rolls of toilet paper. And we wonder why the relapse rate is so high!

The bands purpose most importantly is the message of hope and love that treatment for addiction and education mixed with “HAVING FUN” in  recovery is indeed possible!! The band will also be sharing the stage with special guests from time to time. Musicians in recovery or musicians who are supporters of the addiction recovery movement.  This band is meant to be all inclusive to musicians not exclusive. Get recovery people involved there is so much talent among young people in recovery. Help them to see music and recovery can mix together without getting high.

Mark Bosch-Guitar-Played with-Ian Hunter-Garland Jeffreys-and moreMark is a huge supporter of the recovery movement and has lent his name and talents to the RIR cause in the past. January 25, 2013, The Cutting Room in New York City was the place. Mark blistered the room with his awesome leads during The RIR Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert. Mark living in NYC felt impelled to donate his time and guitar genius to the cause. Mark spent including rehearsal time five hours playing with some great Rock N Rollers.

Mark shared the stage on January 25, 2013 with Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople), Simon Kirke (Bad Co.), Michael Des Barres, Billy J. Kramer, LaLa Brooks (The Crystals), Gene Cornish (The Rascals), Peppy Castro (Blue Magoo’s), Handsome Dick Manitoba (The Dictators, Little Steven’s Underground Garage),Ross the Boss (The Dictators), Joe Hurley (Joe Hurley and The Gents, Keith Richards’ LIFE), Arno Hecht and Larry Etkin (Uptown Horns), Adam Roth (Billy J. Kramer), and Marge Raymond (singer/songwriter/actress). All donated of their time to the cause and through their service to the cause and donation of their time, RIR raised close to $20,000 for the cause on a cold snowy night in Manhattan.

Mark Bosch is on tour off and on with Ian Hunter, Garland Jeffreys and Rockers In Recovery for 2014. Mark is also, gigging with whomever else he can wiggle in his calendar… Guitar tutoring in between.

How It All Started

Mark Bosch-Guitar-Played with-Ian Hunter-Garland Jeffreys-and moreIn 1972 Mark gloms his older brother’s guitar and starts playing rock tunes from records. In 1978, Mark plays his first gigs with a local New Jersey band called 99 Days. 1979 finds Mark moving to Hollywood, California and teams up with Janna Allen for the next five years. Janna penned “Kiss On My List” and “Private Eyes” for Hall and Oates, both #1 hits. It was during this time that Mark worked with Carole King’s daughter, Louise Goffin, opening up for Jimmy Cliff at the world famous LA Roxy.

In 1984, Mark joins up with fab rock singer Benny Mardones, whose “into the Night” reached #1. Mark remains with Benny till 1989. In the interim, Mark tours with Elliot Easton of the Cars (1985) to support his Change No Change solo album. Throughout the 80’s, Mark worked with Michael Monroe(Hanoi Rocks), Carole King (City Streets lp) and Soozie Tyrell (now with Bruce Springsteen). Also, in 1986 joined Broken Homes (with future Lenny Kravitz guitarist, Craig Ross and bassist James Ashhurst) for a US tour with dates opening for Stevie Ray Vaughn. I had the extreme pleasure of playing with Paul Mc Cartney one night at the Lone Star in NYC (pinch me). Countless gigs with Paul Hipp, Pal Shazar, it gets numerous folks. There’s also a slew of support gigs opening up from many famous artists too numerous to mention.

Throughout this period were long stints with The Guitar Guys From Hell (featuring Arthur Neilson, Dan Hickey and myself), a blues/rock and roll tour de force. The duo version (me and Arthur) played the Red Lion on Bleecker St, Greenwich Village for 16 years. Arthur now plays with Shemekia Copeland, a renowned blues queen.

Mark spent most of the 1990’s working with Felicia and the Hotheads (Kevin Tooley), performing in NYC, as well as, Italy, Puerto Rico, Germany and the Carribbean. Throughout the 90’s, Mark has performed with Nena (German superstar), Jules Shear, 22 Brides, Julia Greenberg, Range War, Spencer Davis, and even coached Hollywood actor Billy Crudup for his role in the hit film Almost Famous.
As of late, Mark’s been supplying Garland Jeffreys, Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople) and others with his tasteful guitar work on recordings and tours. Also, working with, the Itinerants, and the amazing Danielle Evin (Devon Avenue/ Vapor Records). All mega-talented artists.

Mark Bosch has been teaching guitar and music theory for over 25 years in the NYC area and we are again very grateful for his ongoing service to the RIR cause.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Rockers In Recovery - News & Media Website

PTSD – Do Something!

As we all sit back and watch the various layers of the U.S. war effort end, it is hard enough for us to conceptually grasp the level of loss and violent despair unfolding each minute for our troops coming home.  Even for family members of soldiers, who risked their lives daily, they may have a different perspective on the madness, but nothing can or will ever compare to the horror each individual soldier has experienced.

PTSD. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

The reason I bring this up is to shed a little light on a situation we are all facing that is certain to explode like a hidden IED, tripped by an unsuspecting soldier. Four letters we’ve all heard before but you better be ready for since they have changed the world we live in…PTSD.  Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a bomb constructed in the middle east as you read this and will be triggered to explode gradually over the next 20 years.  Believe me, if you think I’m being dramatic, watch the approaching explosion and think back to this post.

Military’s powers recognize the the in fact that PTSD exists

Visit for a peek at what we will all be faced with but when you’re reading this, remember that only recently has the the U.S. Military’s powers-that-be begun to recognize the the fact that PTSD exists…that is pathetic and unacceptable. While it is wonderful that it is finally being given credibility, the resources set aside for treatment is a pittance compared to what will be needed. Ironically, each returning veteran will have a ticking PTSD IED inside each one of them that can ‘go off’ at any second. Whether an acute PTSD reaction occurs on the street, at work, at school, at church or at home, you can bet your ass that if WE ALL aren’t equipped with a basic understanding of how to deal with it, we will be suffering as a society for generations to come.

Sadly, PTSD cannot be treated like other behavioral disorders

Sadly, PTSD cannot be treated like other behavioral disorders and daily we hear reports of treatment facilities failing patients and their families on a daily basis by attempting to treat PTSD along with other behaviorally impaired patients…THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE!!!! These individuals and their families need specialized treatments with professionals specifically trained to deal with PTSD. Do the math, with the numbers of returning veterans, we are in for a shit-storm if we don’t get a handle on this thing and the government has its hands full. Remember while searching out help ask the question DO YOU DEAL WITH ADDICTION and PTSD.

Appreciation & Humility

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website

Gratitude Month and Addiction RecoveryIn honor of  “Gratitude Month ” and addiction recovery, I thought it appropriate to write about appreciation and humility. Some of you may be wondering what appreciation and humility have to do with gratitude. If you read my previous article “Gratitude Is Not Simply a Word”, you know that you have to have both of these qualities in order to be truly grateful. If you haven’t read the previous article, no worries and even if you have, I hope this will give you something to reflect on.

Appreciation, a form of gratitude, is such an amazing and beautiful thing. It is a very precious gift many people misunderstand. Many of us misunderstand appreciation for politeness. Saying “thank you” and “I appreciate it” are words said often automatically and without feeling because it would be rude to do otherwise. Many of us only say thank you with feeling when someone does something really big for us like loan us money or go out of their way for us in some fashion. What we are neglecting to notice and appreciate are all those “little” things that people do that are kind and special. The things some people do because it’s who they are not because we ask them to. These very special people go unnoticed and unappreciated too often. It’s time to start letting them know how much of a difference they make in our lives.

In order to begin to see the individuals I’m writing about we must first humble ourselves. It’s time to realize that the world does not owe us anything; nor does anyone else (I was disappointed to discover this too); time to shed of that sense of entitlement. Stop thinking that you’re better than anyone else regardless of how many years of sobriety you have acquired, what your job title is, or how much money you make. If you have degrees and credentials, congratulations; that doesn’t mean that you know everything and have nothing else to learn. No one is ever “better” than anyone else and no one “knows it all”. If you identify with any of this, please take a moment. This is not being written to offend or attack anyone. Maybe if this is sparking something within, you are just due for a personal and spiritual tune-up. If you are caught up in yourself, how can you see the beauty around you?

Now that we are humble (or at least have the idea), we can move on to the beautiful and positive. There is a difference in asking someone to do something in which a “thank you” is expected from both sides or a person who does “kind” things because they expect gratitude, and someone who goes about their daily lives and has no idea that they are even being “kind”, “compassionate”, or “loving” because they make no effort to do so; they are these things….THAT is amazing and beautiful. This is a person you may not even really know but lights up a room whenever they walk into it, a friend who is always there to give a shoulder to cry on and you know will always listen without judgment, a significant other who knows you like no other and loves you for all that you are including your faults, an employee at a store who sees you need assistance without you asking and comes to your aid, a mentor, 12 step sponsor, supervisor or professor, or anyone that has ever told you something at just the right moment, believed in you, given you guidance and encouragement…let them know they make a difference. Let anyone who has had any positive affect on your life, big or small, know. This is how you spread joy, love, peace and appreciation.

Gratitude Month and Addiction RecoveryIt is amazing and beautiful that you will now see these special individuals. What is even more precious is the gift that you can give them. By taking just a moment to tell them, “I don’t think you realize how much…”, you are letting them know how special they are and letting some of their sunshine in to your own heart. You may make someone’s difficult day a bit better and spread some of your own sunshine.

Please take a moment and write a list of all the amazing people who have made a difference in your life, big or small. We spend too much time pointing out negative things. This is the time to start to point out the beautiful things in each other. Spread the appreciation, spread the smiles, spread the sunshine and celebrate the gratitude.

Gratitude Is Not Simply A Word

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

Therapeutic Corner

“Gratitude”

When I facilitate groups on gratitude, I mention that one of the things we should be grateful for is our addiction. Most, if not all, clients look at me and consider me crazy. While I tell them I am crazy (though a good kind of crazy today), I am very serious about what I say and ask them to just listen while I explain. I’ll ask the same of you. Please continue to read before you disregard this message.

Many people that have never become addicted to drugs and/or alcohol have had similar experiences. They’ve experienced trauma, felt that they were not good enough, made bad decisions, done things they regret, hurt people they love, felt like they have not been loved, or have a co-occurring disorder that has not been addressed; they’ve just never chosen substances as their coping device. Maybe they have a different addiction, maybe they have other self-destructive behaviors, or maybe they hide their pain well on the outside but feel empty and alone every single day of their lives. The point is….if we only took the drugs and/or alcohol out of our lives before recovery, we would still not be happy. We would just not be using; we would become one of these people.

Had it not been for our addiction, we would have never had the privilege that most people don’t have… to literally take a break from life and do nothing but focus on ourselves. We had the opportunity to work on ourselves, get the therapy we needed, work through trauma, start feeling better about ourselves and love ourselves. In recovery, we can learn how to become whole and healthy. We can literally choose the kind of person we want to be, and as long as we are willing to do the work, we can become that person. Even after treatment, we have a whole community of people who care about us telling us to “just focus on you”. Other people sometimes get therapy; we get that and so much more.

Regardless of where we were at financially or legally toward the end of your active addiction, we all reached the same emotional bottom. The despair that came was overwhelming and we knew we couldn’t go on. We chose to give life a shot. As we continue in recovery and more to the point because we are in recovery, we acquire the gift of appreciation. Because we know what can be lost, we appreciate things that many people take for granted. The gift of a true friend, laughter, beautiful weather, walking a child to school, family game night, a smile; we appreciate each and every single moment we have because we know how easily those moments can be lost. We can have fun and act crazy and not care what “society” thinks. As long as we are not hurting ourselves, our loved ones, or others, who cares? We are grateful for each and every moment; we cherish them and show it…that is gratitude.

01_RIRARNLet’s take it a step further. Many people really put everything they have into recovery. They find that life is truly amazing. They’ve changed their lives in such a drastic way and became someone they never thought possible. They become so grateful that they want to share this experience with as many people as possible. At this point these people have become not just grateful for their addiction, but because of their addiction and the passion and hard work they put into recovery, they are now grateful for the gift of this new life and want help give others the same opportunity …this is true GRATITUDE.

Here are just a few examples of true gratitude at work: The late James Dube, who helped so many people in so many ways I could write a book. Richie Supa, who reaches so many people with his gift of words whether speaking or singing; for being proud of who he is today and not ashamed to tell anyone where he’s been. RIR All-Star Band, who have chosen to show their gratitude by dedicating their time to showing people that life and music can be so much more in recovery. John Hollis, who spends most of his time on the phone and computer spreading the message to anyone who will listen and trying to get the support needed to make things work. Lori Sullivan, who spends her time often in the background doing things that go unnoticed publicly and without her dedication, RIR wouldn’t have worked. Sunrise Detox, who puts the needs of clients before dollar signs (a very rare quality even in recovery). Ira Levy, who advocates for anyone in need along with his teammate, listed next, and whos gratitude for life is so great it has been passed on to his daughter Sassy. Lynda Micheletti, who leads by example and shows her gratitude for life in everything she does, both in her personal and professional life.

If you’re in active addiction or early recovery, you probably won’t understand this kind of gratitude yet. That’s O.K. You have something amazing to look forward to. If you have been in recovery for a little while, many of you will understand this and are living this now. If you aren’t, I urge you to consider changing your view on what gratitude means on a larger scale and start “paying it forward” as you should be doing with the gift you have been given. Gratitude is not simply a word. If you are truly grateful, your gratitude shapes who you are and will show in your actions.

At Road Recovery in New York, teens in recovery play in a band mentored by rock stars, and learn that musical expression and team work can make all the difference in helping them stay clean.

From the Producers

When we saw the statistics, 9 teens perish every day in the state of Florida, and met devastated families across the nation reeling from the loss of their children to addiction, we knew we had to do something. Research shows that anti-drug campaigns and school programs that focus on the dangers of drug usehave not worked, and may even trigger experimentation. For parents and the nation, the facts are terrifying. 30% of teens regularly use marijuana, alcohol, and pills. 15% are addicted in high school. That means 150 out of every 1000 high school students are at risk for death before their 20th birthday. And the numbers rise when students enter college. 37,000 teens perish every year from prescription pill overdoses alone. Kids and parents need education and programs for the pre-teen and teen years.

Despite the frightening numbers, there is good news. 70% of teens do make good choices. In “The Silent Majority” we featured the kids no one ever hears about to show how a positive approach becomes the catalyst for real solution. We made “The Silent Majority” to show how empowerment gives teens the support and encouragement they need to grow up healthy and safe.
