Music Enhances My Recovery

 Paul Wilson / Sobriety Unplugged

Singer-Songwriter Paul Wilson and  his organization Sobriety Unplugged is a huge part of Rockers In Recovery. Through Paul’s support since 2012 we have been able to do festivals and music production all over the United States. Paul is a beautiful person who is truly loyal to his friends, and his passion for songwriting comes from his life experiences and love of his long term recovery.  We love Paul here at RIR and look forward to many more years together educating people with addiction, through song.

About Paul:  “I started playing guitar in 65 after hearing the Bob Dylan song Desolation Row. I was mesmerized by him, and the song hit home with me. By 17 I had played in a couple of coffee houses and worked in a head shop, Golicombies Pottery. It was the 60s, the birth of sex drugs and rock and roll. I survived.

I got married young had kids and worked hard and was raising a family so music took a back seat. The booze and drugs were always there and got worse. I got divorced and became homeless at 38 and the next thing I knew I was 51 and dying. God’s Grace saved me and I found the rooms of recovery.

New live, new job, new guitar. I started writing and relearning with a fever pitch passion, but I couldn’t play out sober… unbelievable stage fright. With help of other musicians and my sponsor I worked through it.

I got involved with Rockers In Recovery® and it gave me a way to give back and show other addicts and alcoholics you can have fun in Recovery. I put together a family band with my son and grandson, three generations playing music how cool is that.

With the help of John Hollis I started Sobriety Unplugged to do smaller Unplugged venues . The music enhances my recovery and my recovery enhances my music.” Paul Stephen Wilson

Jam Alker – Sobriety Music

Jam Alker – Sobriety Music

Jam was a guest rocker at the Aug. 2016 Maine RIR Meet and Greet and on November 11, 2016 Jam Alker was a guest on Rockers In Recovery® -Radio, over the last decade we’ve worked with and interviewed many singer/songwriters. Jam’s ability to create a message of hope through his recovery based music is inspiring. Through the passion for his personal recovery, Jam comes from a place of love, and you truly hear it in his writings and music. We are proud to have Jam a part of Rockers In Recovery®, shining an ever loving light of hope to a world filled with stigma of addiction. This man is a true recovery soldier, passing on the blessings of his gift of sobriety every day to others. John Hollis, Co-Founder at Rockers In Recovery® – Media.
Jam-Alker-Sophrosyne-2017

Bio-Jam Alker.Com –  Who is Jam Alker?  Soon after he found heroin, Jam Alker put down his guitar and did not pick it up again for ten-plus years. What followed would be what he calls “the most toxic relationship I’ve ever been in” — a decade of extreme highs and lows that brought him, literally, to his knees, begging for a long-needed reawakening. “What I found out was that drugs were not my problem; drugs were my solution to my problem.”

“I had a ton of struggles, but then also a ton of victories as a result of reaching a point in my life where the pain was so great, something had to change.”

For Jam, this problem manifested itself, not just in addiction, but egotism, materialism, and compulsiveness. He found his way back to his guitar and began to spin his experiences into stories told through music. These stories explore life’s dark, gritty underbelly and the despair that can compel bad decisions, without judgment or condemnation, but often with hope.

And he’s found that it’s not just addicts and their families who’ve found kinship through his music; his message of redemption hits home for just about anyone who’s discontent. “My story is not unique,” Jam often says. “Everyone has unhealthy behaviors they go to in times of desperation.”

It was music that helped him change his life — and it’s music that continues to keep him on his path. “Music is my therapy. Putting my experiences, both deadly and life saving, into song have helped me to heal. I owe a great deal of my new life to my music,” he says.

He chronicles this story of addiction and recovery with his first full-length solo album, Sophrosyne.

SoberMap – Immediately Access 12 Step Meetings

SoberMap App

Learn More @ SoberMap – Iphone Free Download – Android Free Download. –  SoberMap App Immediately Access 12 Step meetings in your vicinity, talking about  SoberMap with CEO and Founder John P.

After many years in Recovery, my friends and I would always find it a challenge to make meetings whether we were leaving visiting a relative, on vacation, leaving a customer office, at a conference and especially when we were on travel. We would go back to the hotel search for a local meeting and try to figure out what meeting we could go to. On many occasions, the meeting wasn’t at the location anymore or the I couldn’t make the time set for the meeting at the location.. 9 out of 10 times we just didn’t make a meeting. One day I was using Yelp on travel and the idea of having a SoberMap App for Recovery hit me. With smartphone so advanced, the idea of opening an App that would immediately give me meetings to choose from whether we were leaving a business meeting, a relative’s house, a sporting event etc… it would be great and there was no app to do it.

Recovering Addicts Gather At Festival To Put A Face On Recovery

21730793_1531327356911133_8678988630208618981_n

By Marcella Kester – For Times Leader – WILKES-BARRE — Kirby Park was full of sobriety Saturday, as hundreds of recovering addicts flocked to the park for the Love of Recovery Festival.

The event featured musicians from Florida-based radio and production group Rockers In Recovery, as well as various speakers, vendors and more.

As Dr. Nicholas Colangelo walked around the park, he was greeted by dozens of attendees, each happily updating him with where they are at in their rehabilitation from drugs and alcohol. The Clearbrook Treatment Centers CEO said he was happy to play a part in staging the event for the first time.

“There’s a lot of people dying (from addiction),” Colangelo noted, “but there are also a lot of people getting better, too.”

Rockers In Recovery, founded by John Hollis in 2008, travels the country to participate in recovery-themed festivals through free concerts, podcasts, education and more. Colangelo said he first met Hollis about a decade ago, when he traveled to Florida to attend one of his events. Although Rockers In Recovery is for-profit, it works closely with addiction treatment centers near events they participate in, urging residents and businesses to support their hometown groups to help end addiction.

Hollis wanted to remind the public that people in recovery have a face and come from all walks of life — from doctors and lawyers to teachers and musicians. Read More

Wilkof Project – A Long Way Down (New Release)

Musical Guest; The Wilkof Project, will be sharing about life in recovery and their new release “A Long Way Down.”

The vision of The Wilkof Project was conceived in 2015 by vocalist/lead guitarist Matt Wilkof formerly of Another Black Day. Wilkof disbanded ABD in 2009 due to his destructive lifestyle and unforgiving pressures/pitfalls of the music industry. RIR- Radio Live (Episode 814) – Musician, Singer/Songwriter, Jack Spann -Topic? Jack’s new record “Beautiful Man From Mars” and his work on demo sessions for David Bowie‘s final album, Blackstar.  Jack Spann music has been compared to authentic pre-fame versions of Elton John or Billy Joel, James Taylor, Ray Charles, Ben Folds or even a latter day Joe Jackson.

Rolling piano and melodic delivery puts Spann on the piano bench firmly between Billy Joel and Elton John. The dramatic organ fills are reminiscent of the interchange one hears between Procol Harum’s Gary Brooker and Matthew Fischer. Partial Qoute by Ken Raisenen – From The Vaults – Ontonagon Herald on Spann’s last release Time, Time, Time, Time, Time.

His boundless energy, charisma, presence, and sense of humor are contagious. His perfect meter, and ability to mesh into any style of music, without trying to overpower it, is what makes  Joe Zep so special. 2017 Unite To Fight Addiction Sponsor – Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson to shed a light on addiction recovery based songwriters.  Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions and have a whole lot of fun while doing it.

With the help of Rockers In Recovery I started Sobriety Unplugged to do smaller Unplugged venues . The music enhances my recovery and my recovery enhances my music.  For more information please contact Sobriety Unplugged.

“Recovery is a Process” and Rockers In Recovery has amassed some epic speakers on the topic. This is to help our south Florida community know that there is help, hope, and recovery is possible from addiction.

From his eclectic and contemporary musical influences he draws on the greats to infuse the production with a flair and appeal” said Ric Probst in a recent interview. “In the projects we’ve worked on together, I’ve always been impressed by his work ethic and attention to detail – truly a world class producer.”

Don Taylor – Music and Recovery

13590416_1350828628265607_4399664270457461464_n-768x576

Don Taylor  – Music and Recovery; I remember meeting my 6th grade friend Artimus Pyle drummer for the Lynyrd Skynyrd and his band mates on a Saturday (Leon Wilkeson, Ronnie Van Zant, Billy Powell, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and Stevie Gaines), and after having talked some about me working with the band, if and when they added a horn section, we all headed together in a limo for Hawthorne Raceway (used normally for thoroughbred racing) for their show with Peter Frampton and Gary Wright, the “Dream Weaver”.

We all know what happened next, the tragic Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash in October 1977. After the crash, and because he was relatively unhurt compared to the others who survived (four died, including band members Ronnie Van Zant and Stevie Gaines), Artimus moved back home with his wife and young son in northwest South Carolina, at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and formed the first Artimus Pyle Band (APB).

May 1978 was when I made my move. I began touring and performing with APB, and did so for the next eight years, mostly in the Carolinas. Luckily, I was always able to find decent day-jobs to support my family. We worked with The Marshall Tucker Band (also from South Carolina), both in the studio and on stage, and recorded two albums for MCA Records, “All-Points Bulletin” and “Nightstalker.”

1987 I had no way of knowing this, but right then plans were being made to do the Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour…it was to be a “one-time, nationwide tribute tour” to honor the deceased band members and crew. They asked me to join, I didn’t have to think much about that, I went from a manager-type to a musician in less than a second. And even though I had to wait 10 years (1977 to 1987) to play with the band, it was well worth the wait…a dream fulfilled: Me and Ronnie Eades, the original “Sax Attack” horn section for the band known as Lynyrd Skynyrd.

John Hollis – Music and Recovery

Co- Founder Rockers In Recovery, prevention/education for addiction and alcoholism through music.

Rockers In Recovery Co-Founder, John Hollis – Music and Recovery Radio – Episode 794

It was 2004 and I was stuck in a room drinking and drugging like a pig. I was using 24 hours a day 7 days a week. My state of mental health was off the chain to say the least. Deep down inside I was on a road to death and knew it and was really ok with it. It’s Always Darkest Before Dawn.

I was working in the Midwest and every night I would spend hours getting high, watching porn, and listening to music online. One night I was searching my favorite musical artist Eric Clapton. To my surprise up came a video of him talking about his recovery and how his life had changed. I was blown away, and started to listen to it over and over. This video of my musical hero gave me so much hope. I was near death and it took two more years to come into recovery. I always kept playing that video over and over in my head it gave me hope over the next two years in times of suicidal and morbid thinking.

Two years after I got sober in 2006, Rockers in Recovery® was formed in 2008 by Lori Welch Sullivan and Myself. What began as a radio program to spread the message of recovery through news, interviews, and music has grown into a multifaceted media and production company.

In 2010, I was invited by Kim Martin, Program Director of Crossroads Centre Antigua to broadcast live from Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. What an amazing day, the Rockers In Recovery® -Music Festivals vision was born that day. A way to carrying a message of Addiction Education & Awareness and do it through Rock-N-Roll.

On February 12, 2011 the vision came true, we did our first Education & Awareness music festival called love of recovery. We have gone on to produce twenty five Rockin’ Recovery concerts, festivals, and drug and alcohol addiction community meet and greets across the United States. Rockers in Recovery® now attracts thousands to our music festivals and reaches millions more through our online media reach. The message Rockers in Recovery® is spreading through rock ‘n’ roll: there is hope, addiction recovery is possible.

Drummer Sam Galindo – Music and Recovery

Drummer Sam Galindo - Music & Recovery;

Listen To Interview Click Arrow

Drummer Sam Galindo – Music and Recovery; My recovery started with Broward County Sheriff’s finally bringing me in for my last Main Jail detox May 13, 2015. Consequentially that’s also my clean date now. I had a fairly short stay of about 90 days, but it was not my first. After and offer of 5 years of prison, I reached out to a gentleman by the name of Mike Lieberworth who came in and spoke on my behalf. Long story short, I made it into halfway and into the program, after a little resistance from the disease of course. I have 20 months clean now and in that 20 months I found that no matter what, my idle hands are still the Devil’s playground.

I had to turn back to my first love which is music. What better way to tend to idle hands than putting some drumsticks back in em’!! I play every chance I can and I consider it my form of “Chaotic Meditation”. Anyone who has ever tried to convince me it’s anything other than meditation is quickly made a believer when I explain to them the feeling that playing music gives me. If you love music and you are in recovery, my best advice would be to never let it go. It’s goes hand and hand with my recovery and no one can take that connection away from me as long as I hold it in my heart as I always have.

Tim McGraw – Bitterness keeps you from flyin’

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

rsz_6692ab3974927bc866421ea4a60ecc50_1.jpgBy John Hollis RIR Co-Founder – Addiction Recovery is more than just not using, we have to take on a new way of thinking and living. There are times I’ve lost focus of this. Letting the fear and resentments of the day clog the channel to my spirit can stifle my helping others. So getting some alone time and looking at my behaviors, my attitudes, my motives, and how I’m treating others is very important to my recovery. One of the ways I get grounded, I Listen to music.

Videos like Tim McGraw’s – Humble And Kind, Written by Lori Mckenna is one of those songs that helps me to see what’s important, the  song gives me hope, and it also gives me a kind of sober running beacon in real time to check against my self-centered desires. Music is one of my recovery tools and videos like Humble and Kind helps me to ask myself, how am I living my life today?

One part of the lyrics I love the most is;
“Don’t expect a free ride from no one
Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why:
Bitterness keeps you from flyin’
Always stay humble and kind”

Check out the video, let me know your thoughts?

Tim McGraw – The country star gets candid about his past dependence on “liquid courage” and what was at stake if he didn’t get sober. Huffington Post – 08/26/2015

“You can come up with a million excuses why you drink too much,” he said. “Lack of confidence, the success that came so quickly, and then some of the things you didn’t realize was trauma, I guess, back when you were 11… I think the older you get, the more you start realizing those things.”

As time went on, McGraw came to the harsh realization for himself.

“It got to the point where I knew that I drank too much,” he said. “I knew that it was affecting my personal relationships, it was affecting my professional relationships, it was affecting my family. It was turning me into a person that I didn’t want to be… I was at a point where I could lose everything that I had in my life, first and foremost, my family. It [was] time to stop. And I stopped.”

Sober since 2008, the night before embarking on another tour, McGraw said he had his last drink. “ I flew to Florida that morning from being wasted the night before, and started that tour. Haven’t drank since.” Read more @ How Tim McGraw’s Drinking Nearly Cost Him Everything
