Love of Recovery, Standing United Against Addiction In Honor of the memory of Joseph C. Hollis Sr.

Learn the History of the – “Love Of Recovery” RIR Music & Art Festival

My name is John Hollis Co-Founder of Rockers in Recovery Media which was started in 2008 along with my partner Lori Sullivan. Dedicated to music, news, interviews, events, and festivals.

The RIR goal is to educate and support people about addiction issues, as well as the forms of addiction treatment and ongoing recovery support. We had our first free music festival February 12, 2011, with many bands from the local area that had sober members or members that just wanted to support the RIR recovery mission. Which in time the message became to be known as addiction awareness and prevention through rock-n-roll. We have gone on to produce 29 full musical productions and the following is how the vision became a reality;

I will never forget the date: it was December 10, 2010, when I woke up in the middle of the night (like I usually do) and was eating a bowl of ice cream and the thought came to me (God inspired) “LETS HAVE A CONCERT”. Now mind you we had no clue where to start and how to do one, but we knew it was something we had to do. The next day we started by calling a local lighting and production company in our local area “Everlast Productions” to help us put together our very first concert which end-up being a $25,000.00 production. We had no idea where and how we were to fund it but we were determined to move forward on faith and a prayer.

First we went to the private recovery industry as well as business owners in the community to ask for their support to help us put on the first “Love of Recovery” RIR Music & Art Festival”. It was simply going to be a festival to carry a message of hope to addicts and alcoholics and their families who were suffering or for those in recovery to enjoy the message that recovery is possible and can be fun and we were going to do it through music.
Now as I started out to tell everyone about my new found vision, (and as visions go) not everyone was excited as I was. LOL. So here I am calling treatment center after treatment center to hear “WHAT” that’s crazy it will never work or they wanted know how it was going to benefit them by such questions/statements like “How Does That Put Heads in Our beds”. The local community business owners just straight up said “NO Way” we’re not interested. Only a couple businesses got honest with me and said “listen I love what you’re doing but we don’t want our names associated with that type of event.

1187276_587183914658820_1215443395_nNow during this time I was doing my 2 times daily radio show on a local AM station in south Florida. It was during my evening show on December 16, 2010, during one of my commercial breaks, that my phone rang and I answered it. It my Aunt with bad news. She told me that my Dad had passed away. I was floored, and I still had 15 minutes of a live show to finish with my guest and good friend Robert Gluck.  Still numb as hell from her news, I managed continued on and got through the interview with him. It seemed like the longest fifteen minutes ever. All I can say is I thanked God for my sobriety. I had been sober at that time 4 years. When I got home I made the travel arrangements to get New York to be with my family and to help them with whatever was needed of me. Of course it was a very difficult time for all of us (as it always is with the death of a loved one). But you know what? I got through it.. sober.

Then the unexpected miracle happened, my Dad had left me an inheritance of approximately $100,000 dollars between life insurance and other things. I was completely blown away! After I got home it was on December 22nd 2010 that I received the first of my inheritance it was from his a life insurance. The check was for $30,000 dollars! I remember saying “thank you Dad” because that check was going to pay for most of our very first “Love of Recovery” free to all.. RIR Music Festival” along with the support of Sound Pillow ,one treatment center and a detox whom each did $1,000.00 sponsorship each and Fellowship Living who donated the venue. To me it was my Dad who sponsored the rest.

Our first festival was an unbelievable experience. We steamed the whole festival live on Ustream and broadcasted it live on our AM Station platform. It Was 2011 and simocasted the event though AM Radio, Blog Talk Radio, and Streamed in real time to Ustream with a 4 camera shoot on Social Media. It was long before Facebook Live and just the broadcast was huge expense. Several folks went to treatment from that 1st festival, by the Grace Of God and the Love Of Recovery.

That event drew approximately 1000 people throughout the day with only a little over 6 weeks of promotions! At one point during the show I remember I was standing on the side of the stage during the RIR Unplugged set and tears, uncontrollable tears, ran down my face. It was incredible to see some 200 young people IN RECOVERY, arm and arm in front of the stage swaying back and forth to the music. INCRIDABLE I say, a God moment if ever. I remember saying “thank you God and thank you so much Dad for your gift to me”.

In 2015 Mr. Tom Coderre, Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA was our 2015 – 4th Annual Love of Recovery Music Festival MC for the day, we were so honored that he accepted. He then went back to Washington and put together UNITE to Face Addiction with Greggy Williams. We were honored when they asked Rockers In Recovery to do media reach for Greggy and his crew.

15973669244_d11a96b891_zTom Coderre, Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA said to festival attendees,

“I can say at this point, Rockers In Recovery brings the private treatment sector, addiction education, and the addiction advocacy non-profit sectors together in a unique way that no one else at this point is doing anywhere in the United States. When I walked around today to meet the people that are at the Festival, I find that there’s a mix of people. There are in people who have already found recovery, family members seeking help for love ones, recovery supporters, treatment centers with their clients, and people from the community just coming by to see what it was all about. The one thing I have heard over and over is that the people loved the unique message of hope. I believe what makes Rockers In Recovery unique is that the recovery message/model is carried through the universal language of music with some of great rockers of the day, combined that with educational speakers and advocacy groups and programs to give information and help to those seeking it. RIR brings it all together to attract people to recovery through addiction awareness and education at their meet and greets, concerts/festivals”.

To this day that Tom’s statement blows me away and all I can say is, “Wow another God moment” for me. It’s such an honor, who would have thought all these years later that gift from my Dad would go on to do, what it has done.  Many organisations now follow the same model for their events and many treatment programs  years later are starting to use the unplugged model for treatment centers and as a therapeutic tool. Today we give back by, doing what we can to support others with the same visions to learn more about our model. Thank God For The 12 Steps , I use to get resentful when someone would use my God inspired concepts or ideas, then I realized the concept or idea belonged to God’s universe, not me.

Through my Father’s gift to me, we now reach hundreds of thousands of people with the message of hope everyday online along with the thousands threw our annual festivals.  What we can’t do alone we can do together, and together that help came to me from Singer-Songwriters, Musicians and Bands like MiZ Band,  Paul Wilson of Sobriety Unplugged, George Massengill (Chillbillies), Andy (Babe) Pace (Gary US Bonds), Basil Bankston (The Platters),Charlotte Day (Vocalist), Drew Preston (Drew Preston Project), Tony Fellows on Lead Guitar (RIR All Star Band Member), Davis Mitchell on Guitar (Chillbillies), Daniel Holt on Bass (Johnny B. and The Road Dogs), Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Don Tyler of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lou Esposito (The Capris), Simon Kirke (Bad Co.), Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople), Michael Des Barres, Marge Raymond (ELO), LaLa Brooks (The Crystals), Gene Cornish (The Rascals), Peppy Castro (Blue Magoos), David Uosikkinen (The Hooters), Vic Monte (Crush), Ed Walsh (Grateful Road), Michael Mostel (RIR Unplugged), Chris Waddell (RIR Unplugged), Bruce Duncan (RIR Unplugged), Joseph Antonelli (Joe Zep), Stacey Hampton (RIR Unplugged), Maria Doty (Double Standard), Ceefor Ebrahimi (Ceefor Band),RC. Budaca, Jam Alder, Brian Vincent Sances, Tommy Conwell of the Young Rumblers, Nashville, Tenn.-based singer-songwriter John McAndrew , Recovery Rappers Adam Neff, Rob Rival Palo and the late blues great David Shelley, The Wilkof Project, Woody Giessmann , Elizabeth Edwards,  McCartney Mania, The Chillbillies, The Grateful Road , Crush Band of South Florida, The Few, Thrown Alive, Billy J. Kramer, Handsome Dick Manitoba (The Dictators, Little Steven’s Underground Garage), Mark Bosch (Ian Hunter Rant Band, Garland Jeffries), Ross the Boss (The Dictators), Joe Hurley (Joe Hurley and The Gents, Keith Richards’ LIFE), Arno Hecht and Larry Etkin (Uptown Horns), Adam Roth (Billy J. Kramer), Rocker Colin McGuinness, and Tommy Conwell of the Young Ramblers. Each of these energetic musicians brings not only 100% but gives an extra 100% when supporting any causes or events.

It was also through Dad’s gift we were able to hire musicians like, Lou Esposito (The Capri’s), Jeff Gantz (Johnny Winter), Ricky Byrd (Joan Jett and the Blackhearts), Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel), Richie Supa (Aerosmith), Kasim Sulton (Blue Oyster Cult and Todd Rundgren), Christine Ohlman (Saturday Night Live Band), Mark Stein (Vanilla Fudge), Marge Raymond (singer/songwriter/actress), Casey Montana Rogers, Jeff Kazee (Southside Johnny, Bon Jovi), along with his band mates Chris Anderson, Neal Pawley and Muddy Shews to headline our festivals to the community as another way of attraction to support the cause. We spent tens of thousands of dollars, to find it really doesn’t work. People come to have fellowship and fun, we found that more grassroots & local bands where received better then the headlines. It also became over a two year time period an ego and personal agenda fest, dotted with behind the scenes political, business and personal motivation for a few. That made me very sick, it almost killed me and almost destroyed the mission of addiction prevention and education though music. Now the musicians who are meant to be there, God and his universe will direct that. What an amazing sometimes, painful learning journey for me one day at a time.

In closing all I can say is: thank you to God and thank you to my father Joseph C. Hollis Sr. for all the gifts we have received. It’s through music and its awesome sound that I live with a purpose today. I have been given many visions throughout the years, and have been lucky enough to see some of them become realities. It’s with these realities comes responsibilities as well. There have been times when I’ve tried to run away from them due to my own ego, fear, and pride, but that mission in my heart to help people always brings me home to the most important message, the message of hope. (A God moment).
