RECOVERY MATTERS

RIR Music FestBOOK OF THE MONTH: The Mastery of Love, by Don Miguel Ruis
RECOVERY MATTERS
TRUE NORTH
Believe it or not, there are actually TWO North Poles. One is at the top of the earth. The others is known as MAGENTIC NORTH, which is actually in northern Canada. It’s what compasses point to.
If you were standing exactly on top of the magnetic north pole, your compass would point nowhere in particular since the place it is used to pointing to is at your feet. Finding magnetic north is not always easy because the spot is actually moving about 10 miles north-west every year. Since it was discovered in 1831, magnetic north has traveled many miles form from its original spot. I think the same can be said of Alcoholics Anonymous. Since it was founded in 1935, it has traveled many miles from its original spot. Believe it or not, there are actually two A.A.’s.
OLD A.A. AND NEW A.A.
OLD A.A: “Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” (A.A. Page 45)
NEW A.A: “Came to believe that a power less than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”(Doorknobs, etc.)

OLD A.A: “Our real purpose is to become spiritually fit so we can be of maximum service to God, and the
people God puts in our lives.” (A.A. Page 77)
NEW A.A: “Our real purpose focus all our attention on ourselves so we don’t end up back in treatment.”

OLD A.A:  “We decided to go to any lengths to achieve victory over alcohol.” (A.A. Page 76)
NEW A.A “We are powerless over our addiction to alcohol or any other drug.”

OLD A.A: “Remind the prospect that their recovery is not dependent upon people. It is dependent upon their
relationship with God.” (A.A. Page 99)
NEW A.A: “Remind the prospect that their recovery is dependent upon meetings; meeting makers make it.”
OLD A.A: “The problem has been removed. It does not exist for us.” (A.A. Page 85)
NEW A.A:  “The problem will never be removed.”

OLD A.A: “We have ceased fighting anything or anyone – even alcohol.” (A.A. Page 84)
NEW A.A: The fight with alcohol or any other drug will stop ten minutes after we are dead.”

OLD A.A: “You may be suffering from an illness which only a spiritual experience will conquer.” (A.A. P 44)
NEW A.A. “If you just don’t drink and go to lots of meetings, you’ll be fine.”
OLD A.A. “Unless each A.A. member follows, to the best of his ability, our suggested Twelve Steps to recovery, he almost certainly signs his own death warrant.” (Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, Page 174)
NEW A.A.” Think of it this way: Just at you can have your hamburger the way you like it at Burger King, you can have your recovery the way you like it in A.A.. Just do the Steps you like, and leave out the rest.”
OLD A.A. “Ask Him in your morning meditation, what you can do each day for the person who is still sick.” (A.A. Page 164)
NEW A.A. “In the morning, just ask Him to help you not pick up a drink or drug that day.”

OLD A.A. “We of Alcoholics Anonymous are more than one hundred men and women who have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body.” (A.A. Page xii)
NEW A.A. “We will always be recovering.”
OLD A.A. “No human power could have relieved our alcoholism but God could and would if he were sought.” (A.A. Page 60)
NEW A.A “God can’t or won’t relieve your alcoholism, you’ll always be recovering. Don’t bother asking.”
OLD A.A. “The spiritual life is not a theory, we have to live it.”
NEW A.A. “In the morning, ask Him to help you not pick up a drink or drug. Thank Him at night. You can ignore meditation. It’s really not a maintenance Step.”
OLD A.A. “We have a daily reprieve contingent upon the maintenance of our spiritual condition.” (A.A. P 85)
NEW A.A. “Here’s what you need to know. The reason people relapse is that they stop going to meetings.”
The original members of A.A. understood that their human resources:
1.      THEIR ABILITY TO REASON: I could lose my job, marriage, career, driver’s license, custody of my children, go to prison, etc., and
2.      THEIR LOVE: For their spouses, partner’s, children, and families – disappeared when cravings for alcohol or drugs hi-jacked their brain and emotions.
I f our powerful human resources, our ability to reason, and the love we have for our families, completely failed us, who came up with the brilliant idea we could turn to powers less than ourselves: potato chip bags, doorknobs, rolls of toilet paper, empty shoe boxes or key chains to get the Power we need to achieve the victory over the obsessive thoughts, compulsive feeling, and physical cravings that ruled our lives?
Perhaps the “change” that’s needed is not “new” change, but “old” change, for example, in OLD A.A. agnostics and atheists were told to use the “group” as their Higher Power; not a chair or door knob.

Supporters of Recovery

RIR Music FestRIR Music Fest is not an us and them thing:

We are so excited about this years free festival not only is it a time for all people who want to celebrate recovery to come together. It’s also a time for old recovery friends to come together to enjoy some great music and some awesome art produced by people who are in recovery or support recovery.

Supporters of recovery help us every day in our recovery wives, husbands, brothers, sisters, moms dads, friends and employers. They also sometimes endure years of insanity living and dealing with an addict. This is a time for the supporters too.

The supporters of the recovery movement in our communities like musicians and artists that want to help because they have lost people or are struggling with someone in their lives that is suffering from the throws of addiction.  RIR Music Fest is not an us and them thing.

People need to know what their resources are and where to go. It is an important time for recovery education, addiction awareness and prevention to reach the masses because our community who suffers through their addictions and supporters of friends/family will know that recovery is  honorable and can have a positive result.

Rockers In Recovery’s focus is to help provide direct and indirect support to everyone who needs help with addiction and mental health issues. Through RIR and our supporters we can all continue to grow stronger, and better serve all those struggling with addictions, while supporting educational preventative measures and community awareness.

This event will be the anniversary of our very first concert back in February 15, of 2011. It is also the 20th concert RIR will producing for the recovery community.. We have been bringing an awesome Addiction Awareness & Prevention Message all over the U.S. to our attendees and look forward to producing many more.

Rockers In Recovery Music Festival

It Takes A Sponsor To Get Things Done

Rockers In Recovery Music FestivalBy Carol Harblin, Months prior to the 2015 February Rockers In Recovery festival, there is much work put into the celebration.  Not only will this year’s festival be celebrating love of recovery, but also RIR is full of gratitude for this year’s sponsors for the festival.

Just as recovering addicts require a sponsor to help them through their recovery journey, festivals, radio shows, and venues each need sponsors from steadfast community supporters.

The Academy for Addiction Professionals is an educational facility that promotes online and offline learning to people who wish to have refresher classes and to those who desire to be in the recovery addiction field.

“We value Rockers In Recovery as an organization and what it represents – that people can have fun at events and concerts without resorting to drugs and alcohol,” said Crystal Shlifer, Director of Business Development at Academy for Addiction Professionals.

From RIR Friend Jake Fleming,

“And as I predicted earlier, Philly got a classic rock a** kickin’ from the “Rockers In Recovery” All Star band. I want to thank Rob Vincent, John Hollis, Lori Sullivan, and the RIR All Stars for coming to Philadelphia and celebrating with us. It was great to finally meet you all “The struggle continues, but victory is certain!”

From RIR Friend Fred Martin,

“Rockers In Recovery and The RIR All-Star Band helped make the Pro-Act Recovery Walk a huge success this year with 22,000 people in attendance. It was directly through RIR’s branding and PR that we rocked the city of Philadelphia . Thank You RIR for all you did. People are still talking about how great the RIR All-Star Band was.”
From RIR Friend Beverly Haberle,
“Rockers In Recovery and The Rockers In Recovery All-Star Band well excited our expectations, the band was great and Pro-Act was very happy to have RIR with us.”From RIR Friend Marita O’Connell,”Rockers In Recovery made the 14th Pro-Act Recovery Walks the best walk we ever had. Thank You RIR”
From Our Friend Erin Riffe,

“RIR came to Aberdeen WA. and produced the best event we have ever had with our organization. They not only filled the seats. They also branded and marketed the organization to the point we are having them back in 2015”.  Thank You RIR you all Rock

Each of the sponsors agree that by giving back to the community it is important, because it serves the recovery community. In addition it is creating awareness to the public by association and example.

It is important that recovery education and awareness reaches the masses because people who suffer through their addictions will know that recovery is an honorable and positive result. People need to know what their resources are and where to go. Unfortunately there are people who still believe that recovery is shameful, but that is not the case anymore; recovery and coping in effective and functional ways is more respectable and honorable.

Physical, hands-on support is essential to getting things done. It takes a village to run a business. A business is there for the community, so it is essential for the community to step forward and show their gratitude for that business.

This is what it’s all about folks:

From Alicia T. – Tue, 09/30/14 11:21 am
“I just wanted to thank you guys at RIR for helping me get into rehab last February. I even was allowed to bring my guitar! It was good because it forced me to deal with issues I had buried. I struggled quite a bit but finally the miracle happened for me. The obsession to use has been lifted and I have 78 days clean I love life and my recovery and I am looking forward to a year clean so I can go to hospitals and jails to spread the message of recovery. Without your help I would have overdosed because I felt hopeless to get into rehab. You guys put me in touch with the person who found a place for me when all others turned me down because of my Medicare. I will never forget and will pass it on whenever possible.”
