A Miracle In Itself

RIR,

Just wanted to drop you a line about the show in Aberdeen, Washington last month. Everyone involved with the show was extremely professional and well prepared.

It was obvious that R.I.R. is an organization focused on recovery, who knows exactly how to get the message across to people through it’s concert series.

As a drummer who has done his share of concerts, I can tell you the show went off without a hitch, from the musicians to the sound guys, to security. The type of music for the show reached everybody that was there, as was evidenced by several people taking the steps to get into treatment! A miracle in itself.

I’m looking forward to doing many more concerts with R.I.R.

Sincerely,

John Gianoulis

Recovery Month Walk and Concert

September 20 "RECOVERY WALK and CONCERT"

Register Here

Walking Into Recovery Month September 20,2014 One Step At A Time. By Carol Harblin, Rockin’ Reporter;

We have seen beloved characters in movies fall to drug addiction, like Jenny in Forrest Gump. She leaves her lifelong best friend and son in her wake. To see anyone fall to addiction is heartbreaking.

Addiction does not discriminate age, class, or money. In February of 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman died of a drug overdose at the age of 46 years old. This August of the same year, his co-star from the movie Patch Adams, Robin Willliams died tragically at the hand of major depression and suicide at another young age of 63 years old.

Rockers In Recovery’s (RIR) upcoming concert is September 20, 2014, in The Philly Recovery Walk. It is a combined effort between RIR and Pro-Act Recovery Walk.

There were 20,000 people in attendance in 2013, and this year RIR’s goal is to break that record and have at least 30,000 participants in the Recovery Walk in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The concerts are much more than music, it is coming together to gain awareness, education, and unconditional support among everyone. RIR is not just for those who are battling addictions, but for everyone who knows addiction in anyone they love.

2014 National Recovery Month - Recovery Walk and concert

Register Here

Recovery Month This year, the Pro-Act Recovery Walk and RIR Concert is at the Great Plaza in Penn’s landing on the waterfront. The walk route will wind through the historic Philadelphia, near Independence Hall.

RIR is about sober fun and music. The organization heavily involves a variety of musical contributors to carry the message of hope and sober fun through music, but RIR is much more than even music. RIR as a whole surpasses guitars and singers, it is a fellowship of all people who are in recovery from chemical dependency as well as family and friend supporters of those walking the program.

Recovery is an extremely difficult journey. Just because someone has 25 or 30 years in recovery doesn’t make them in the clear for life of sobriety. Recovery is work, just like life. It can be grueling and messy, but with the steadfast and unconditional support it is manageable and survivable. Whether someone has depression, an eating disorder, or a drug addiction, it is all manageable with unconditional support and love.

Make this year’s Recovery Walk bigger than last year by showing up to support, walk, and rock among people who want to make a difference while being clean and sober. RIR is a sober fellowship of camaraderie, support and hope. It brings together all walks of like with a similar addiction journey. RIR welcomes ALL people who choose to live a sober and clean lifestyle with the support of similar people who resonate and rock at the same frequency.

Robin Williams once said, “I used to think the worst thing in life is to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel all alone,” and RIR’s mission is to never let anyone feel alone.

Even those who are supporters of those who are recovering from addiction need support. Just because some people look strong and smile often doesn’t mean they are stronger than the person who is crying. The louder someone laughs, the more they may be crying on the inside, just as the quieter someone is the more devastated the person may be feeling. RIR is the organization that brings all that support together where nobody should feel alone and left out.

The RIR events are an experience of a lifetime and is encouraged for everyone to be part of any and all the concerts RIR puts on because it is a time when support and love is limitless and in full abundance. We are all survivors of life and we are all recovering from some addiction or issue. RIR is a chemical-free organization with a brother and sisterhood support.

Where were Philip Seymour Hoffman’s and Robin Williams support? They both appeared to have it all plus the American dream, but truth be told, they were both carrying lifelong battles of addiction and depression. Money and fame doesn’t make a person’s recovery, it is always the unshakable support of loved ones that make the difference.

With addiction running rampant throughout the world, taking countless victims with it, the Recovery Walk in Philadelphia, September 20, 2014 is vital for the education and awareness of addiction to future generations.

Addiction and Depression

Death of Robin Williams – As a person in recovery who suffers from both depression and addiction(dual diagnosis)has gone through relapse I’m glad this is being shared. Life is fragile at best. This is the second public figure with long-term recovery in three months to die from issues related to addiction the first being Philip Seymour Hoffman.

There is this huge undertone in the recovery community that says “I’m Clean BLA BLA Years” and these same people will make people struggling with relapse and mental health issues feel less then. Then when a person takes their own life over gossip and recovery community social out casting (and it happens) these same people won’t look at their part, they will just blame it on the person’s active addiction.

How do I know this? I was almost there.

I had several deaths of family members from 2011-2013. I was walking around in depression and undiagnosed diabetes for two years, adding on top of that a lung cancer scare in 2013. I was out of my mind IN RECOVERY. When it all came crashing down with several years into recovery I was close to putting a gun in my mouth “IN RECOVERY”.

What I witnessed was people taking to Facebook and other forms of social media to tell all their recovery friends of my demise. They held camp on the issues of my life not even knowing the real issues I was facing.

In December of 2013 I was getting help and taking time off to get back on my feet. Long time in recovery business associates with long-term recovery went to social media to tell the world how they believed in the message but not the mess. How they are no longer with the organization. These same people in long-term recovery approached my business partner telling her that if I would sign over my stock to them they would get me help. When she said no, he is already getting help they started contacting sponsors and friends telling them of my demise and how they shouldn’t do business or associate with our organization.

I’m very happy I got the mental health help I needed and have my type 2 diabetes under control. The cancer scare was just that a scare. Dealing with depression, addiction and anxiety is still very painful situation at times. I’ve put one foot in front of the other with the help of family and a handful of recovery friends who stood by my partner and myself. I’m truly blessed that I didn’t follow through with my thoughts of ending my life.

Wake UP, all we have is today. Love and Compassion is our code. You have no clue who may be struggling right now. How you treat them may be the last thing they play in their minds over and over again. It is a very sad day indeed when we still believe beating someone up and calling it tough love will help change their lives. When it could be Physical/Mental Health issues they don’t even know they have.

Life is fragile at best

Amazing People

Liberty DevittoI have been fortunate to be a part of some major events in my musical career. I have traveled the world and have met some amazing people. As a drummer I am set up in the middle of the stage and have the advantage to look out at the audience as they watch the performers.

Some of those most memorable audiences were part of my experience with “Rockers in Recovery”. To witness first hand at what they bring to the world of sobriety is amazing. When someone gets sober and is working on them selves the first question they ask is “okay now what do I do”.

Rockers in Recovery” gives them a sober outlet while respecting their right to “Rock and Roll”

I am thankful for Rockers in Recovery.

God Bless,

Liberty DeVitto

Addiction Recovery and Rock Stars

Live In Chicago At The Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival

Addiction Recovery  is not an unknown status for some rock stars. The world of rock and roll has certainly seen its fair share of addiction and substance abuse. In fact, drugs, alcohol and other risky behaviors are not only common among musicians; sometimes the entertainment industry makes it seem that they are celebrated! However, there are many rock stars that have kicked their habits and are now in recovery from addiction.

The following rock stars may have been drawn into the world of drugs and alcohol, but now use their talent and support from friends, family and fans as methods of relapse prevention.

Addiction Recovery and Rock Stars

1. Elton John  Elton John AIDS Foundation
Sir Elton has been pretty vocal about his past substance abuse, citing cocaine and alcohol as his drugs of choice during the 1970′s and 80′s. Elton claims to have consumed “massive quantities” of drugs and alcohol, and has even said he’s surprised to still be alive. Sir Elton entered recovery and has been sober since 1990, and uses the support of his husband, family and friends as relapse prevention.

2. Eric Clapton   The Breeze
The music legend says kicking heroin and alcohol saved his career, and his life. In past music news from Clapton’s interviews, he says that he would never have survived to make albums like the upcoming release Old Sock and The Breeze if he hadn’t sobered up. “I thought that if I stopped drinking and I stopped using drugs…I would not be able to play anymore. In other words, those were things that were necessary for inspiration,” he says. “But it was a shortcut.

My experience now tells me in a long time of being in recovery, that I can be a good musician with or without that philosophy.” The height of Clapton’s heroin use came in the early ’70s, and he passed out during the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden. He kicked heroin later in that decade, but then turned to alcohol, before finally getting sober once and for all in 1986.

He has since demonstrated a longstanding commitment to recovery, holding benefit concerts for Crossroads, the treatment center he helped to found in Antigua. “It’s a gift I’ve been given and the best way to honor it is to stay clean and sober to be able to do it as well as I can,” he says. “I wouldn’t be here today—I’d probably be dead—if I hadn’t gotten straight.”

3. Lou Reed        Heroin
The late Lou Reed solo artist and former Velvet Underground front man was known for his heavy heroin and cocaine usage. In fact, many of songs are centered on drugs and the addict lifestyle. However, Reed became sober and has spent over 30 years in recovery. Reed cites songwriting, performing and the love and support of his wife and fans as his methods of staying clean and his older songs for caring his message of recovery in his own way.

4. Keith Richards   Sister Morphine
Keith Richards, lead guitarist for The Rolling Stones, was once so influenced by drugs and alcohol that he’s since become the poster child for addiction and how it relates to the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. After incurring various drug charges and suffering several near-overdoses, Richards decided to quit the hard stuff. He furthered his sobriety by giving up alcohol in 2010.  Keith has been Rockin Recovery ever since. Maybe now he’ll be a poster child for addiction recovery.

5. Slash    Slash Talks recovery
The Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver guitarist is no stranger to addiction. In recent years, Slash has opened up about his addiction to heroin and how it affected both his personal and private life and how he lives in recovery. The extremely talented musician has described how, at first, heroin was a great comfort to him, but quickly came to consume his every thought and action. Currently, Slash is clean and sober, and cites his wife, sons and other sober musicians as his greatest tools of relapse prevention.

Although these now musicians in recovery nearly destroyed their lives with drugs and alcohol, they managed to break the cycle of addiction and continue to flourish in their careers. The message here is simple: if these guys can kick their habits and find success in recovery, so can you! Most importantly the  is that treatment and education mixed with ”HAVING FUN” in recovery is indeed possible!!

Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame Member Using Music To Heal

I don’t think any one thing carries more memories with it than music. Music has been an ever present friend throughout every stage of my growth. I listened to my parent’s music while riding in the car as a small child. Shortly after, I started to notice the music my older siblings listened to. Next, of course, I started to develop my own taste.

Music and the people who played it, influenced the way I thought, my clothes and the way I did or didn’t cut my hair. When I was lonely, music kept me company. When I was down, music lifted me up. When I was joyous music helped me celebrate. I see Her face when I hear That song. Another brings me back to the political unrest our country experienced. Any one of several take me back to the movement of peace and love. Yet another to the blending of many different instruments into the harmonious flow of orchestrated music. I write about how I feel, but nothing can capture feelings like a good song.

When I got sober a few years back, I didn’t think I would ever have fun again. I realized, however, that sober misery had to be better than the life I was living. Not only have I found happiness in sobriety, I’ve discovered the best way of life I could have ever imagined. I didn’t have to leave music behind either.

There existed a wealth of music about the struggle approaching and life in sobriety by more artist than I could number. Not only that, but there are organizations to promote it. Organizations like Rockers InRecovery. If you aren’t already following Rockers In Recovery on Facebook, please check them out.

Using Music – Spreading The Message of Sobriety; Rockers In Recovery celebrated their 7 year milestone back in January of 2015 and they make music available in a number of ways while spreading the message of sobriety. At times music has been my best and only friend. I believe that God gave us music so we could express what we could never put into words. I know where I’d like to go right now and I know just the music that will help me get there.

Re-Discovering Creativity in Recovery

Music HealsOne of the misconceptions artistic addicts and alcoholics have for not giving up their substance of choice is that by abusing alcohol or drugs it makes them more creative. This idea has been perpetuated by an association between drug experimentation, imagination and musical ability. There is an unreasonable fear that when the drugs and alcohol are taken away, the artist will become a boring, uninspired version of themselves.

These wild ideas generated from glimpses of fuzzy- brained withdrawal symptoms experienced whenever an addict or alcoholic managed some time sober just excuse the vicious cycle. While the cloudy thinking that characterizes rehab can hinder creativity for a time, long-term recovery will actually increase artistic ability. The tendency to pick up a guitar or sit down to write may be daunting at first, but like everything valuable, it’s worth a few awkward first steps.

In recovery mental clarity and cognitive ability will improve, and so the ability to effectively express through art will return with energy, strength and most certainly improved skill. The therapeutic nature of music itself is healing and can become a valuable coping mechanism and source of meditation

Another gift of sobriety is discovering the ability to transmit inspiration through music. Typically when using and drinking, our musical expression was a reflection of a self-centered universe. Sobriety promotes engaging with life in ways we wouldn’t normally; venturing outside our comfort zone, confronting who we truly are and finding possibilities we never thought possible before.

The experience of music in recovery can elicit both conscious and unconscious emotions (Inselmann, 2007) (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012). Through the verbal processing of the musical experience, clients can now identify and put into words emotions they were previously unaware of or unable to express. Music and creativity in recovery can break through walls that restrict their capacity for recovery (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011) (Sergio Castillo-Pérez, 2010) (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013) (de l’Etoile, 2002).

Music Testimonials of Recovery

Getting treatment for addiction brings out some interesting music, which can be met with something less than approval by the general population.

The little known facts about these three nearly lost songs tell how they were almost rejected from the beginning, despite being valued testimonials of recovery.

1. I Came to Believe:    Johnny Cash

While the song isn’t a legend unto itself, the artist certainly is. Out Among the Stars was recorded in 1981 and 1984 and released 11 years after his death. Some believe Cash considered the album a failure. Came to Believe was written while Cash was in rehab in 1983 and deals with his powerlessness and the role a higher power played in his finding some time sober.

2. Cold Turkey:    John Lennon

This song was originally rejected by the Beatles as an addition to Abbey Road, but Lennon decided to release it as an independent single in 1969. Described as a creative outburst, Lennon quit “cold turkey” because he wanted to start a family with Yoko Ono. Banned from radio at the time for seeming pro-drug use, the song remains a powerful inspiration from a painful experience.

3. Under the Bridge:  Red Hot Chili Peppers

It’s reported Anthony Kiedis didn’t want to bring what he thought to be an overly emotional poem to his band. Despite Kiedis’ misgivings, the song became one of the quintessential songs about addiction and recovery. The tune is solemn as the singer realizes how much he has lost because of his addiction, believing his only companion is the city of Los Angeles.
