ADDICTION TREATMENT IS BUILT ON A FAULTY FOUNDATION

by Jack Kelly, CAP, NLP, LHMP.

Message For The Day - May 29A conundrum (co-nun-drum) is a riddle which requires ingenuity in answering and discovering its meaning. So, here’s a conundrum about addiction and recovery. After the original members of A.A. admitted that they were powerless over alcohol, they set the following goal:

“We were willing to go to any lengths to achieve victory over alcohol.”

How could they achieve victory over something they were powerless over?

To find the answer to this riddle we must first make a distinction between one, the substance, and two, our addiction to the substance. Regarding one, the substance, if we don’t put the substance, alcohol or drugs, inside our bodies, we don’t become powerless.

Here’s the wisdom of the “message” passed on to us by the original members of A.A:

“We know that while the alcoholic keeps away from drink as he may do for months or years, he reacts much like other men. We are equally positive that once he takes any alcohol whatever into his system – something happens, both in the bodily and mental sense, which makes it virtually impossible for him to stop. The experience of any alcoholic will abundantly confirm this.” (A.A. Page 22)

What’s the point? The whole concept of powerlessness relates to our body; not our will-power, mind or emotions. They are distinct and separate issues. They come under the heading of lack of power.  If we don’t put these addictive substances inside our bodies, we don’t’ become powerless. The one thing we will never recover as alcoholics and drug addicts is – the ability to safely put alcohol, or any other mind altering drug, inside our body. Why? Because something happens, mentally and physically which makes it impossible for us to stop.” What is the “something” that happens? The cravings kick in; then, our brain gets high-jacked. We lose all access to rational thought, the love we have for our spouses, partners, children, and families, as well as our spiritual beliefs and moral values.”

Then, what is it that the original members of A.A. achieved victory over? They achieved victory over their addiction to the substances that created so much pain and suffering in their lives.  They achieved victory over the obsessive thoughts, compulsive feelings, and physical cravings that kept them reaching out for a pill, drink, or illegal drug. “The problem has been removed. It does not exist for us.”  Now here’s the catch. They tell us that it will only stay removed “so long as – we stay in fit spiritual condition.” (A.A. Page 85)

Narcotics Anonymous and many of the treatment centers in the U.S. that provide treatment for millions of alcoholics and drug addicts have a very significant problem. They are built on a faulty foundation. They fail to separate one from two; the substance, and our addiction to the substance. Step 1 of Narcotics Anonymous states: “We admitted we were powerless over our addiction.”

Here’s another conundrum. If we are “powerless” over our addiction, why should we bother seeking help or treatment? If the solution found by the original members of A.A. was offered to newcomers, perhaps they could find what the original members of A.A. found: “We found the Great Reality(God/Higher Power)  deep down within us.”  (A.A. Page 55)

The faulty foundation goes beyond separating one, the substance, from two, our addiction to the substance. Instead of being advised to go “deep down within,” today, many newcomers in N.A. and A.A. are often told to look outside themselves for a solution to their problem; that they can find the Great Reality(God/Higher Power) in chairs, empty shoe boxes, doorknobs, or rolls of toilet paper. And we wonder why the relapse rate is so high!

Music Therapy In Recovery

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website

Carol Harblin Rockin’ Magazine Writer

Carol Harblin Rockin’ Magazine Writer

THE POWER OF MUSIC Music is a magical creation that has been part of everyone’s lives for as long as musical instruments and phonographs have been in existence. Music has indirectly shaped our lives in such profound ways that it is difficult to see life without it, yet it is vastly taken for granted.

Music has the magical power to reach far beyond our subconscious and hit emotional chords we didn’t even realize was there. It has powerful influences on emotions and moods. Listening to a happy song can lift people’s spirits while some tunes can lead the individual to feelings of despair. The thing that makes music so special is that it allows people to communicate their moods, in some way. It can be difficult to explain a mood to other people, but music can express it exactly. There are many claims made for the power of music, and there is growing scientific evidence to back some of these. Music therapy has been shown to help people manage deal better with a variety of conditions. There is also good evidence to suggest that it will help those individuals who are trying to build a life away from addiction.

Two forms of communication expressed from music are dance and by singing. People are free when they are alone in their cars as they drive down the freeway to one of their happy songs. They are transported into that song and even find themselves singing along to it. We all fall under its spell each time we hear those rhythmic beats. Even if we cannot carry a tune, we still become spellbound in a few brief moments where we find ourselves singing along.

Ever notice how music has a way of moving our bodies along with those musical rhythms? Dancing can be even more liberating than singing because when we move along to our favorite tunes we are also boosting our endorphins in our brains. Physical activity naturally releases a healthy chemical in our brains that allows us to maintain a positive and happy well-being.

Music therapy can be defined as the “clinical and evidence-based use of music to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship.” It involves using music to help people manage physical, emotional, or cognitive problems. The client can interact with the music in different ways such as listening, singing, or dancing to the beat. They can also write songs or discuss lyrics.

D & R Theatre - 205 South I St. Aberdeen, Wa. 98520Formal music therapy involves using the magic and power of music in an environment where clients are being observed and helped as they express themselves in their own way of communication. The music therapist is trained to in how to use music effectively. They can use their knowledge to decide on the exact course of treatment that will work best for each client. When they first meet the client the goals of treatment will be established, and this will guide their efforts. The therapy may involve some type of music creation or it could be just listening.

We all learn, absorb, and communicate differently so that means we respond and express ourselves differently with music. Some people would find drawing or painting a better way of expressing their emotions, whereas another person finds they are more expressive with the written word. The music therapist must work with each client individually to find out which form of communication is most effective when releasing their emotions and feelings that have been dissociated for a long time.

Music is capable of reaching people far beyond any way we could ever realize. Music is capable of transporting us to a place that makes us feel better in a time that was easier for us. Life is not always a picnic on a blue sky day; sometimes we need a little music to help us through those rainy days as well.

Activity with a friend or a group:

Find a song from every genre that resonates with you and either vocalize or write down how your emotions respond and what sort of memory arises.

From Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr, Glenn Miller Band, to Charlie Daniels and Garth Brooks and Mozart to Metallica – there is always a song that takes our breath away and transforms our memories.

THE BEST MIND ALTERING DRUG IS TRUTH

THE BEST MIND ALTERING DRUG IS TRUTH

THE BEST MIND ALTERING DRUG IS TRUTH

Jack Kelly, CAP, NLP, LHMP

There’s a legend about an American Indian who, while hunting, came across an eagle’s egg. He wandered around the woods looking for its nest, but couldn’t find it. Then, he saw a hen surrounded by her chicks. So he put the eagle’s egg in her nest.

Two days later this baby eagle emerged from its shell, looked around, saw the chickens, and did what chickens do, his whole life, peck at seeds and flutter around the hen.

He was totally unaware of the extraordinary powers Nature had bestowed on him. His ability to fly above the mountains that surrounded him, the power of his wings, the ecstasy he could have experienced soaring above the earth.

Like the eagle, most of us are unaware of the extraordinary powers that Nature has bestowed on us, the power to relax our bodies, quiet our minds, calm our emotions, and transform our cravings for substances or behaviors that create chaos in our lives into cravings for honesty, integrity, and peace.

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

At the moment you were conceived, you were power-full. You had all the strength you needed to develop into a beautiful human being nine months later. Agree?

At the moment you were born, you were power-full. You had all the tools you needed to live a happy, useful, and productive life. Agree?

Then you, like me, and every other human being on planet, had your encounter with what Buddha called, The Three Poisons:

Delusional Thinking: It shows up as, “If I just had more…. more toys, sex, money, drugs, or alcohol, I would be so happy.” Tell that to Philip Seymour Hoffman, Whitney Houston,  Amy Winehouse, and Michael Jackson.

Destructive Emotions: Shame, Guilt, Anger, Self-Pity, Resentments, Self-Hatred, Fear, Anxiety, Depression, Boredom, etc.

Cravings: There are more than 150 Twelve Step Programs, but we all have the same primary addiction – I want to escape from mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual pain.

There are platoons of ex-priests, ministers, Rabbi’s, high school teachers, governors,  senators, congressman, mayors,  doctors, lawyers, business leaders and army generals who got caught with their hands in someone’s pants or someone’s pocket. When their stories appear in the newspaper, they remind us that we are in the same boat. Cravings create absolute chaos in our lives.

Science has proven that addiction is a brain disease and that that meditation heals the brain. In Twelve Step programs, meditation, Step 11, is a Maintenance Step.  But one of the myths that the recovery community has bought into is that the Twelve Steps should be taken in order. Taken literally, this means you shouldn’t pray or meditate (begin healing your brain) until you complete the first ten Steps. What would happen to the recovery rate if everyone followed this advice, “Ask Him, in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the person who is still sick.” (A.A. Page 164)

Florida Drug Rehab Destination Hope Expresses Concern Over Zohydro

Zohydro AddictionCall 877-241-8383 for more information on this drug.  A brand-new painkiller has been released, and it could pose a very serious threat to the public. Zohydro is the first painkiller that is made up only of hydrocodone, and available dosage amounts go as high as 50 milligrams. This is five times as much as comparable drugs. Destination Hope’s Florida drug rehab is concerned that a lack of education and easy access to the drug could lead to an increase in painkiller addiction.

“The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that around 6,600 people use prescription drugs each day for non-medical reasons,” said Ben Brafman, founder and CEO of Destination Hope, a highly regarded Florida drug rehab facility in Fort Lauderdale. “Too many of those people quickly develop a dependence on the drug, as painkillers are highly addictive when not taken properly.”

In the US, prescription painkillers are responsible for more overdose deaths than heroin and cocaine combined. There are two key factors that raise concern about Zohydro: it is available in high dosages and there are currently very few, if any, strategies in place to deter drug abuse.

When used correctly, opioid painkillers like Zohydro are designed to reduce pain. However, that’s not all they do. These drugs also result in a heightened sense of euphoria due to an increased release of dopamine. This is what eventually leads to addiction, because people keep coming back for more of that feeling. When their brain becomes tolerant of the drug’s effects, they may increase the dosage to achieve the same levels of euphoria. This can quickly spiral out of control.

“Destination Hope has seen more and more cases of prescription drug addiction, particularly due to painkillers,” said Brafman. “It doesn’t matter if the substance is technically legal or approved by the FDA; when someone has an addiction, it is serious and can be very difficult to overcome. Although treatment works, prevention is always ideal.”

Painkiller addiction can start a week after someone first begins taking an opioid drug. The longer they take the drug, the harder it is to stop, sometimes resulting in a difficult withdrawal period. The reason so many of these overdoses lead to fatalities is because opioids carry a risk of respiratory failure.

“Zohydro is not the only painkiller on the market right now, but it could be one of the most potent,” said Brafman. “What’s worse, there aren’t yet methods in place to prevent people from crushing the pills and increasing the effects. We must take steps to educate the public on the dangers of painkiller abuse if we’re going to put stronger drugs on the market.”

Benefit From Music In Recovery

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website

Since 2008 Rockers In Recovery (RIR) was created to provide support for people and their families suffering from all forms of addiction.  The RIR goal is that  through music we can provide education on addiction, as well as, treatment options.  We initiate and develop opportunities that encourage interaction between Rockers In Recovery and our fellow friends in recovery. This helps us all to maintain meaningful and rewarding connection to our community’s.

RIR does this through the following:

“Rockers In Recovery  ” and The Rockers In Recovery All-Star Band: The RIR All Stars  combine cream of the crop musicians that are in recovery or support recovery.  This makes for some serious good time dance music and some good old Rock and Roll.  We also invite other musicians that are in recovery or support recovery to help carry our message of hope through music.  Their musical talent makes them RECOVERY all stars.  Most importantly the message of “Rockers In Recovery Live Concert Series” is that treatment and education mixed with “HAVING FUN” in recovery is indeed possible!!

Benefit From Music In Recovery:

If people hope to benefit from music in recovery there are a number of things worth considering:

* It is not necessary for people to have any type of musical ability in order to benefit from this experience. They may not even like music very much to begin with.

* Music can be of benefit to people young and old.

* It is possible for the individual to create their own playlist of therapeutic music by adding those tracks that they found soothing.

* There is no right sound for relaxation. Some people will feel relaxed while listening to classical music but for other people it could be classic rock, punk, and all other styles of music.

* It is a good idea to keep a journal in order to record how different types of music impact mood and feelings of relaxation. This way the individual will discover the music that works best for them.

* If people are having difficulties concentrating they may wish to try music with a fast beat to see if this helps.

* Music can be a wonderful tool to help people exercise. These tracks can motivate and encourage the individual to pick up the tempo of their activity.

* Meditation music can help the individual experience meditative states. It is not a good idea to use music long-term for meditation because it becomes too much as a crutch and can prevent the individual from advancing along this path.

* Simple drumming is a relatively easy thing for people to learn. This type of music creativity can be good for escaping pain and emotional turmoil.

* Learning to play a musical instrument can be a great choice for new people in recovery. As well as this being entertaining it will also be a great stress reducer.

* Music can be used to bring a message of recovery to our communities as a whole. The Rockers In Recovery goal is to provide education and support about addiction, as well as, treatment options. We initiate and develop opportunities that encourage interaction between Rockers In Recovery and our fellow friends in recovery. This helps us all to maintain meaningful and rewarding connection to our community’s. RIR does this through the following.

WHY TREATMENT FOR ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION ISN’T WORKING

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website
by Jack Kelly, CAP, NLP, LHMP.

Imagine meeting with your doctor to discuss the results of your physical exam. She looks at you and says: “I am sorry, but I have bad news. You have cancer.”

You ask, “What can I do about it?”

She tells you: “You are powerless over this disease. You will never recover from it. It wants to kill you.”

Would that inspire or motivate you to take action that could put your disease into remission? Probably not! Why bother if you are powerless over a disease that wants to kill you.

HBO did a documentary, REHAB. Over a three year period, they visited treatment centers across the U.S. Here’s what they concluded: Of the 2 million Americans who seek treatment each year, ninety-three percent relapse. Most relapse within the first six months. But some relapse the first day. How is this possible?

IT IS NOT ONLY POSSIBLE, IT IS HIGHLY PREDICTABLE

When someone is admitted to treatment for an addiction to Alcohol, Cocaine, Heroin, Methadone, OxyContin, Suboxone, Valium, and Xanax just to name a few they get two messages:
1. You are powerless over your addiction.
2. You will never recover from it.

After leaving treatment, they go to meetings where this message is reinforced. With the exception of A.A., almost all Twelve Step Programs are built on this foundation. “We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction.”

The original members of A.A. admitted they were powerless over alcohol. They never admitted that they were powerless over their addiction to alcohol. The PROMISES demonstrate the results of their belief.

Unfortunately, at meetings, newcomers get more bad news:
1. Your disease is doing pushups.
2. It wants to kill you.
3. It “speaks” to you.

WOW! Is there no hope?

Rockers In Recovery Addiction Network: 877-241-8383

877-241-8383

There is some hope, but for that to happen, newcomers are told, “You have to get out of the driver’s seat.” If they are willing to do that, then the course of action is pretty simple, “Just don’t’ pick up.”When a person’s life is controlled by obsessive thoughts, compulsive feelings, and physical cravings, do you really think they are “in” the driver’s seat?

I wonder what would happen to the recovery rate if we gave our patients and clients a different message. “You have to get in, not out, of the driver’s seat. You have to take responsibility for your life and your recovery by asking for help, following directions, and using all the tools and resources available to you.”

“Just don’t pick up.” Tell your patients or clients to use this approach the next time they want to smoke a cigarette. If they had the “power” to just not pick up, they wouldn’t need your help. They wouldn’t need to be a member of a Twelve Step program. So, where do they get this “power?”

Go to just about any A.A. or N.A. meeting, and when the topic of Higher Power comes up you will hear someone tell a newcomer something like: “Doorknobs have magical powers that can stop you from picking up pill, drink, or drug.”

The next obvious step for the newcomer would be to kneel down in front of a doorknob, and turn their life and will over to the care of that doorknob.

What we have created in our industry, and what is reinforced at Twelve Step meetings is a RECOVERY POWERLESS MINDSET.

This is in sharp contrast to the RECOVERY POWER MINDSET used by the original members of A.A.

“We were willing to go to any lengths to achieve victory over alcohol.” (A.A. P 45)

In the rooms of A.A. and N.A. insanity is defined as, “Doing the same thing and expecting different results.” Perhaps our industry is more insane than the alcoholics and addicts we treat because we keep doing the same thing and don’t expect different results. It is not unusual to see people return to the same treatment center three and four times – in the same year.

I have been a main sponsor for Rockers In Recovery for the last two months and have been quite impressed with John Hollis and Rockers In Recovery’s ability to promote and spread my message to so many individuals. It has been fantastic to see it happen in real time. In the past I’ve spent money with no ROI not the case with RIR.

RIR and their staff  have exceeded all of my expectations. I have new clients, new media contacts, new followers that are real they engage with me all the time, my book sales are up, my phone contacts and  website visits have increased directly because of my main sponsorship with RIR.

RIR is very refreshing to work with they are very transparent, honest, helpful, and you can get them when you need them. I would highly recommend RIR for your marketing and branding needs.

I would like to express my gratitude to Rockers In Recovery for your help and the work you do for others as well.

Sincerely,

Thomas Gagliano, MSW,Published Author,C-MATcertification

SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week 2014: May 18-24

RIR and SAMHSA Partner to Increase Awareness that Prevention Works

RIR and SAMHSA Partner to Increase Awareness that Prevention Works

Rockers in Recovery is supporting SAMHSA’s third annual National Prevention Week 2014, a health observance to increase public awareness of, and action around, substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion.  From May 18-24, this week-long observance is an opportunity to join with individuals, organizations, and coalitions in communities across the country to promote prevention efforts, educate others about substance use and mental health, and create and strengthen community partnerships.  Last year, hundreds of prevention-themed events attracted thousands of participants across the United States to raise awareness of behavioral health issues, change lives, and improve the health of their communities.

This year, the National Prevention Week theme is Our Lives. Our Health. Our Future. Six days during the week focus on a specific behavioral health topic to raise awareness about these issues:

  • May 18:  Prevention and Cessation of Tobacco Use

  • May 19:  Prevention of Underage Drinking

  • May 20:  Prevention of Prescription Drug Abuse and Marijuana Use

  • May 21:  Prevention of Alcohol Abuse

  • May 22:  Prevention of Suicide

  • May 23:  Promotion of Mental Health

RIR and SAMHSA invite you to participate in National Prevention Week 2014!

Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Get in the spirit: watch the National Prevention Week 2014 promotional video. Share the video link and spread the word!

  • Commit to a healthy lifestyle by taking the Prevention Pledge, and encourage friends and family to do the same.

  • Add the power of your voice to SAMHSA’s 2014 “I Choose” photo project. Visit www.samhsa.gov/prevention-week to learn how you and others can participate.

  • Find out about events taking place in your state or territory during National Prevention Week 2014.

  • Collaborate with others in your community to implement strategies and programs to prevent alcohol abuse and illicit drug use and promote mental health.
