RIR All-Star Band Rockin’ The Philly Walk

PRO-ACT RECOVERY WALKS! 2014

Meet The Rockin’ Recovery “East Coast All-Stars”RIR All-Star Band Rockin’ The Philly Walk – PRO-ACT Building on our 12 previous years of hosting Recovery Walks! in Philadelphia. PRO-ACT is asking you to support our 13th annual Recovery Walk on September 20, 2014. Once more, we are pleased to announce that we will hold it at the Great Plaza in Penn’s Landing on the beautiful waterfront.

With 20,000 participants in 2013, we’re hoping you will help us to break that record. Tell your friends about it.

Building on our 12 previous years of hosting Recovery Walks in downtown Philadelphia, PRO-ACT is asking you to support the largest walk ever assembled in support of addiction recovery—our 13th annual Recovery Walk on September 20. Once more, we are pleased to announce that it will be at the Great Plaza in Penn’s Landing on the beautiful waterfront. We’re extra excited this year that we’ve been able to expand the Walk route through historic Philadelphia to walk past Independence Hall and extend that symbol of freedom and dignity to what recovery brings to individuals and families, thereby benefiting the community at large.

How Can You Help to Make the Walk a Success?  Tell your friends about it; register and walk; form a team; do some fundraising; become a sponsor; donate to a walker or the Walk; volunteer for a committee now; or help on that day.

Pennsylvania Recovery Organization

Why? There has never been a time in our history when the voice of the recovery community needs so badly to be heard. The goals of the Walk are to eradicate discriminating public policies; increase awareness of the benefits of recovery; honor providers of a wide range of treatment and recovery services; mobilize the recovery community to work toward increased funding for research and quality treatment and recovery support services; provide hope to those still suffering; to honor those who haven’t survived this chronic disorder; and to raise funds so that PRO-ACT can continue to expand its services to the growing number of individuals and families who wish to access and sustain long-term recovery.

10 Year History of RIR

Since 2008 Rockers In Recovery® – Where Recovery Education Information
and Rock-N-Roll Come Together:

Rockers In Recovery® - Addiction Recovery Media

250_250_312949_1216558John Hollis (John), Founder of Rockers In Recovery, was born in the mid-1960s, between a devastating presidential assassination of John F. Kennedy (JFK) and one of the most famous musical festivals of the era known as Woodstock. John grew up in a small town of Poughquag, New York, just two hours north of New York City. The youngest of three boys John’s mother and father divorced when John was seven years old.

During this time, John was left with his father and one of his brothers. Being a single parent is difficult enough, but to have a wife leave her family it can create many challenges and try the patience of even the best of Saints. His father did the best he could with what he had with his sons, while working a full-time job. Being a single dad as well as an adult child of an alcoholic can create challenges and can make coping unmanageable, especially when his abilities to cope are strained due to lack of coping skills.

John’s home life became out of control and unmanageable throughout the 1970s. One of John’s brothers is seven years older, and the eldest brother is fourteen years older than him. Between 1951 and 1964 John’s mother had several miscarriages in between the three brothers which is why there are many years between each brother. From a very early age with all the family dysfunction going on around him, John isolated a lot. He found safety with his Aunt Marge and Uncle Blackie his cousins Vince,Bo and Pat in New Jersey as well as his oldest brother Joe when he was home in NY. Over the next few years of his childhood, he became a victim of sexual and physical abuse. Disciplinary problems began increase within his family life, school and his community.

RIR_HistoryJohn’s threshold for dysfunction came to a head and at the tender age of 11-years-old he smoked his first joint and drank his first beer. This was the only form of coping he knew. The after effect of smoking a joint and beer had made him feel a peace for the first time in a very long time. It numbed him from the pain he felt from his messy life. Getting high was the answer he was looking for, so he thought. He thought it was the magic pill to curing a messy life. At the age of 13, he sniffed out his first experience of cocaine, the effects made him feel much different than the pot and the alcohol; it made him feel more alive and elated that he chased those feelings for the next 30 years.

Hitting a bottom comes without warning and when least expected. The next 30 years brought countless jail time, detox centers, treatment centers, in addition to the loss of his whole family. He went on to have two divorces and three children from two relationships. John was becoming increasingly more lost and more out of control, the more he continued coping in his negative ways.

He never was taught or was instilled with trust; therefore, he had many trust issues. With a mom leaving and not having anyone he could turn to because everyone around him appeared too busy, it did not send him off into the world with a limitless amount of trust in people. Because he felt he could not trust anyone, he thought it was only him against the whole world. If his whole life didn’t fit in a hefty bag he wanted nothing to do with it. Settling was not an option. His life was ricocheting from one catastrophe into another with only vision of negativity – Drugs, anger, hate, and getting through life by whatever means necessary was his pathway. After realizing that leaving high school at 16-years-old with only a ninth grade education left his opportunities limited, he studied for his General Education Diploma (GED) and then started working for the telecom and construction industry through 2004. In 1993, he moved to Miami, Florida because he wanted to be closer to the cocaine.

This period of his life was all about daily substance abuse, as much as he could get. His benders were lasting weeks into months. He began to hit the streets where he loved the feeling of being alone. Being alone was something he found solace in since his recluse childhood growing up with a family too busy to hang around with him. He became homeless and actually liked it…or so he thought. He did not have a home, because he wasn’t given the example of how to uphold one, so he made his world his home. John had his own pay phone on the corner of 79th and Biscayne Blvd. Where he would receive and place phone calls. He would panhandle to use and vice versa. In 2006, he slept under a bridge on 79th Street in Miami after another failed recovery attempt he sat next to a 12-step club in Miami.

The epiphany of “WOW you did this to yourself no one else did.” John went into a meeting and picked up a white chip. He then called a friend and asked if he could stay at his sober living house in Pompano Beach. John had been a resident there off and on since 2002.

Hence 2008, John’s Vision:

Mark Bosch-Guitar-Played with-Ian Hunter-Garland Jeffreys-and moreMark is a huge supporter of the recovery movement and has lent his name and talents to the RIR cause in the past. January 25, 2013, The Cutting Room in New York City was the place. Mark blistered the room with his awesome leads during The RIR Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert. Mark living in NYC felt impelled to donate his time and guitar genius to the cause. Mark spent including rehearsal time five hours playing with some great Rock N Rollers.

Mark shared the stage on January 25, 2013 with Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople), Simon Kirke (Bad Co.), Michael Des Barres, Billy J. Kramer, LaLa Brooks (The Crystals), Gene Cornish (The Rascals), Peppy Castro (Blue Magoo’s), Handsome Dick Manitoba (The Dictators, Little Steven’s Underground Garage),Ross the Boss (The Dictators), Joe Hurley (Joe Hurley and The Gents, Keith Richards’ LIFE), Arno Hecht and Larry Etkin (Uptown Horns), Adam Roth (Billy J. Kramer), and Marge Raymond (singer/songwriter/actress). All donated of their time to the cause and through their service to the cause and donation of their time, RIR raised close to $20,000 for the cause on a cold snowy night in Manhattan.

Mark Bosch is on tour off and on with Ian Hunter, Garland Jeffreys and Rockers In Recovery for 2014. Mark is also, gigging with whomever else he can wiggle in his calendar… Guitar tutoring in between.

How It All Started

Mark Bosch-Guitar-Played with-Ian Hunter-Garland Jeffreys-and moreIn 1972 Mark gloms his older brother’s guitar and starts playing rock tunes from records. In 1978, Mark plays his first gigs with a local New Jersey band called 99 Days. 1979 finds Mark moving to Hollywood, California and teams up with Janna Allen for the next five years. Janna penned “Kiss On My List” and “Private Eyes” for Hall and Oates, both #1 hits. It was during this time that Mark worked with Carole King’s daughter, Louise Goffin, opening up for Jimmy Cliff at the world famous LA Roxy.

In 1984, Mark joins up with fab rock singer Benny Mardones, whose “into the Night” reached #1. Mark remains with Benny till 1989. In the interim, Mark tours with Elliot Easton of the Cars (1985) to support his Change No Change solo album. Throughout the 80’s, Mark worked with Michael Monroe(Hanoi Rocks), Carole King (City Streets lp) and Soozie Tyrell (now with Bruce Springsteen). Also, in 1986 joined Broken Homes (with future Lenny Kravitz guitarist, Craig Ross and bassist James Ashhurst) for a US tour with dates opening for Stevie Ray Vaughn. I had the extreme pleasure of playing with Paul Mc Cartney one night at the Lone Star in NYC (pinch me). Countless gigs with Paul Hipp, Pal Shazar, it gets numerous folks. There’s also a slew of support gigs opening up from many famous artists too numerous to mention.

Throughout this period were long stints with The Guitar Guys From Hell (featuring Arthur Neilson, Dan Hickey and myself), a blues/rock and roll tour de force. The duo version (me and Arthur) played the Red Lion on Bleecker St, Greenwich Village for 16 years. Arthur now plays with Shemekia Copeland, a renowned blues queen.

Mark spent most of the 1990’s working with Felicia and the Hotheads (Kevin Tooley), performing in NYC, as well as, Italy, Puerto Rico, Germany and the Carribbean. Throughout the 90’s, Mark has performed with Nena (German superstar), Jules Shear, 22 Brides, Julia Greenberg, Range War, Spencer Davis, and even coached Hollywood actor Billy Crudup for his role in the hit film Almost Famous.
As of late, Mark’s been supplying Garland Jeffreys, Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople) and others with his tasteful guitar work on recordings and tours. Also, working with, the Itinerants, and the amazing Danielle Evin (Devon Avenue/ Vapor Records). All mega-talented artists.

Mark Bosch has been teaching guitar and music theory for over 25 years in the NYC area and we are again very grateful for his ongoing service to the RIR cause.
