Drug Addiction Relapse

Coming Back After Drug Addiction Relapse

January 31, 2006 – I thought this date would have been my clean date forever, but instead it made me realize that no date was set into stone if I am not vigilant about my recovery.

Just in 2008, only two years into my recovery, Lori S. and I started Rockers In Recovery (RIR). We spent the next five years of our lives building RIR. During this time, we had to battle many struggles and jump many hurdles. To be out in the front row and bathed in the spotlight for the world to see all our struggles taking place can be very overwhelming.  Just as celebrities are under the constant stream of spotlight, they too feel that insurmountable pressure to always smile and never do anything wrong.  Nobody should have that much pressure put onto them on an everyday basis, especially in the beginning of recovery when the issues and wounds are still fresh.

By bringing in a myriad of musicians who were also in recovery, as well as numerous people within the community to help carry the message of hope through music to recovery; we had many triumphs during our few years as RIR, despite the tribulations.

Our goal is to create and provide support for people and their families suffering from all forms of addiction.  Our vision is to educate and support those battling and recovering with addiction.  We initiate and develop opportunities that encourage interaction between Rockers In Recovery and our fellow friends in recovery. This helped us all to maintain meaningful and rewarding connection to our communities.

Coming Back After Addiction Relapse Who knew that ego could change the direction of a higher powered vision. From 2012 to 2013 I promoted a message of the RIR All-Star Band instead of the message of hope for RIR that was intended to bring “Hope” to those who still suffer and families who needed support. This became like a drug to me after a series of personal issues including the death of 11 members of my immediate family, extended family and some very close friends in 2012.  As RIR embarked its ascent, I began my descent into self-destruction where I started to isolate, meetings ceased, and I even stopped talking about my feelings. The responsibilities and pressures increased which made me forget my own self-care needs.  No matter what stage or step in recovery somebody is in, a person should never deny asking for help.  Nobody can do everything, especially at the beginning of recovery.   Infidelity, Dishonesty, Confusion, Fear, and right back to a drink an a drug. That date I thought would be my clean date forever didn’t matter anymore. Filled with resentments over what I conceived and feared as other people’s agendas I used.

My NEW clean date is December 10, 2013 and it is the day that began to repave my road to recovery.  Stepping back into the recovery process from step one, day one has been extremely tough, especially when my ego and pride got the better of me. Without the undying help and grace from God, true friends, therapy and treatment, recovery would not have been possible.   There is a small unspoken fragment within the recovery community who see relapse as a failure of recovery; however, this is not the case, because life is a journey with many peaks and valleys.  There is an old Chinese proverb, “Fall down seven times, stand up eight,” which proves that life is not always about a series of successions and in life there will be some setbacks.  A successful recovery is not how well you cope during the good times but who is always there in good and bad, and how a person copes with it all.

The duration of my relapse was six months, and it does not make my journey unworthy nor does it define me a loser or a failure.  A relapse will make me and my recovery that much stronger.   I’ve talked with others about relapsing and of how difficult it is to get back into recovery.  It is harder to get back into recovery after relapsing than it is to sustain it because of the stigmas attached to relapsing. It is the person’s ego and pride that stops a person from surrendering back into recovery.  If recovery involves in-depth, unconditional support then why do people judge those who relapse, instead of showing more compassion and understanding?

Coming Back After Addiction RelapseUnfortunately some will never make it back because of the death caused by addiction. It is with great sadness that there was a recent death due to drug addiction of an actor who relapsed after 23 years in recovery.   This is the reason RIR came into creation, to educate and support people continue their recovery journey with ZERO judgment, and with 100% support.  It is through music that got many people into alcohol and drug addiction from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s but it is NOW with RIR through music that people will sustain their recovery because it is possible!

After looking back over the past few years, the red flags were waving very clearly, but I was looking at the waves instead of the warning flags. I stopped looking at the real source of all the issues that was my relationship with God and ME. In order to completely surrender into recovery, a person needs to get rid of pride and ego, and hold on to faith and grace.

When I walk into those meeting rooms, I start to feel insecure or resentful, but that is when I need to hang on to my faith and higher power.  Insecurity and resentment are the ego’s emotions.  There is no room for ego when in recovery. I don’t let what other people think of me drive the real reason I’m there. Today, I get to jump back into the daily vigilance of program. Just because I have fallen does not mean I’ve lost my understanding of the recovery program. It means I stopped working it. When a ship loses its way while immersed in thick fog, it needs the Captain’s faith to continue sailing and finding the dock. The ship will get there, just don’t lose faith.

Today, I get to pickup the key of willingness and honesty and forge forward just for today.  The source of my TODAY is my Higher Power (HP) – and for me, my higher power is GOD.  My HP puts people in my life each day for me to help or for them to help me. It’s up to me to put my hand out on both counts.

I’m grateful to the Grace of God. I don’t have to suffer by my addiction or the judgments of others. If your coming back like me, don’t let anyone run you out of your support group. I call my sponsor and jump into my step work, I went back to my home group and let them know what was going on with me; I’m getting active again in my program of recovery – and it feels great to be alive and clean! In addition to my support group and sponsor support, I am also receiving outside help for the issues that the 12-steps cannot address. Little by little I’m becoming part of the “We” again and not the “I.”    “We” is in “Wellness” not “I.”
