Appreciation & Humility

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website

Gratitude Month and Addiction RecoveryIn honor of  “Gratitude Month ” and addiction recovery, I thought it appropriate to write about appreciation and humility. Some of you may be wondering what appreciation and humility have to do with gratitude. If you read my previous article “Gratitude Is Not Simply a Word”, you know that you have to have both of these qualities in order to be truly grateful. If you haven’t read the previous article, no worries and even if you have, I hope this will give you something to reflect on.

Appreciation, a form of gratitude, is such an amazing and beautiful thing. It is a very precious gift many people misunderstand. Many of us misunderstand appreciation for politeness. Saying “thank you” and “I appreciate it” are words said often automatically and without feeling because it would be rude to do otherwise. Many of us only say thank you with feeling when someone does something really big for us like loan us money or go out of their way for us in some fashion. What we are neglecting to notice and appreciate are all those “little” things that people do that are kind and special. The things some people do because it’s who they are not because we ask them to. These very special people go unnoticed and unappreciated too often. It’s time to start letting them know how much of a difference they make in our lives.

In order to begin to see the individuals I’m writing about we must first humble ourselves. It’s time to realize that the world does not owe us anything; nor does anyone else (I was disappointed to discover this too); time to shed of that sense of entitlement. Stop thinking that you’re better than anyone else regardless of how many years of sobriety you have acquired, what your job title is, or how much money you make. If you have degrees and credentials, congratulations; that doesn’t mean that you know everything and have nothing else to learn. No one is ever “better” than anyone else and no one “knows it all”. If you identify with any of this, please take a moment. This is not being written to offend or attack anyone. Maybe if this is sparking something within, you are just due for a personal and spiritual tune-up. If you are caught up in yourself, how can you see the beauty around you?

Now that we are humble (or at least have the idea), we can move on to the beautiful and positive. There is a difference in asking someone to do something in which a “thank you” is expected from both sides or a person who does “kind” things because they expect gratitude, and someone who goes about their daily lives and has no idea that they are even being “kind”, “compassionate”, or “loving” because they make no effort to do so; they are these things….THAT is amazing and beautiful. This is a person you may not even really know but lights up a room whenever they walk into it, a friend who is always there to give a shoulder to cry on and you know will always listen without judgment, a significant other who knows you like no other and loves you for all that you are including your faults, an employee at a store who sees you need assistance without you asking and comes to your aid, a mentor, 12 step sponsor, supervisor or professor, or anyone that has ever told you something at just the right moment, believed in you, given you guidance and encouragement…let them know they make a difference. Let anyone who has had any positive affect on your life, big or small, know. This is how you spread joy, love, peace and appreciation.

Gratitude Month and Addiction RecoveryIt is amazing and beautiful that you will now see these special individuals. What is even more precious is the gift that you can give them. By taking just a moment to tell them, “I don’t think you realize how much…”, you are letting them know how special they are and letting some of their sunshine in to your own heart. You may make someone’s difficult day a bit better and spread some of your own sunshine.

Please take a moment and write a list of all the amazing people who have made a difference in your life, big or small. We spend too much time pointing out negative things. This is the time to start to point out the beautiful things in each other. Spread the appreciation, spread the smiles, spread the sunshine and celebrate the gratitude.

Rockin Recovery

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

Rockin Recovery

The recovery process is a gradual step-by-step process.  With recovery, it takes a large portion of patience and an even greater serving of faith; just as it takes infinite patience and grace to follow through with the Festival of Gratitude.  November is gratitude month, and November 2, 2013 kicked off Rockers In Recovery’s 3rd annual festival of gratitude.

It did not begin there though – Rockers In Recovery rocked their gratitude and rockin’ spirit on Rocktober 31st at Destination Hope,The Academy for Addiction Professionals and at Sunrise Detox with a Rockumentary filmed by Reach Out Recovery’s Leslie Glass and series of interviews of a few of the RIR All-Star band members and sponsors.

Richie Supa and Ricky Byrd took turns sharing their stories and songs as they played the Unplugged series at both locations.  Music and humor are both integral to a successful recovery.  Music helps focus people and humor keeps life light.  From the mock-fun song, “I Want to Go to Rehab,” to somber songs like “In the Rooms,” and “Broken,” they kept the audience wanted more. Both centers loved their honesty though great music written by Richie Supa.

RIR has much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.  Not only is there boundless gratitude for everyone who participated and came to the festival, but for Reach Out Recovery’s Leslie Glass for filming a Rockumentary.  RIR was being followed by a camera crew at both Destination Hope and Sunrise Detox, both treatment facilities who have sponsored and supported RIR success through the past several years.

The crew with Reach Out Recovery continued their filming straight through to the big gratitude festival on Saturday, November 2nd.  Great music rolled out all day starting with The Crude Brood, Crush Band, Doug Hirsch and Friends, Fat Chance, Sooner or Later Band, Keep Coming Back Band, Jimmy Stowe & the Stowaways, Johnny B. and the Road Dogs. Each one of the bands that played at the festival all rocked with top-notch energy than ever before.

RIR would be lost without each and everybody who took the time to support recovery and music, especially the RIR All-Star band Featuring:Musical Director Richie Supa(Aerosmith)- Guitar/Vocals Ricky Byrd  Lead Guitar/ Vocals (Joan Jett),Liberty Devitto  Drums (Billy Joel Band),Christine Ohlman  Lead Vocals (SNL Band),Mark Stein-Keys/Vocals (Vanilla Fudge)Muddy Shews- Bass/Vocals (Southside Johnny) RIR Band Special Guest Recovery Supporters: Gary Palmer BSO, Marge Raymond (ELO), and Lou Esposito (The Capris). The RIR All-Star band had tirelessly helped and supported RIR and the festival with every iota of their beings.

Every stage that the RIR All-Star band rocks out on proves that energy increases with every year of recovery.  Each musician makes their instrument effortless to play and makes the audience scream for more.

The Festival of Gratitude took an enormous amount of work, just like recovery, and when everyone comes together sharing their love it makes all the blood, sweat and tears worth it.  There was a meet and greet session the night before the festival where Lori Sullivan, director and founder of RIR, sang her praises to her family of RIR for all their help and support.  Meet and greet sessions are a special time where people can meet each of the band members of RIR All-Star band and show their gratitude and appreciation.

Fest day the music came off the stage with perfection. Veteran stage manger Chopper Kovach and veteran guitar tech Daniel Garber who both work for the who’s who of Rock & Roll made it look easy. John Delarenzo of On Stage Productions worked for three days to make it all happen.

Community restaurant owners Jamie and Rebecca  McDonnell came in to the festival with a passion like it was there own. His origination DelVecchio’s headed up all the food vendors. Jamie’s hard work made this years festival a great smash with some great eats.

Broward County Sheriff Scott and wife Susan Israel, Captain Ira Goldberg BSO, Rick and Rita Case, Ira Levy, Ben Brafman, Joe McDonnell, Rebecca McDonnell, Robin West, Scott Armbuster, Naomi Fabricant,Leslie Glass, CB Smith Park along with RIR Co Founder, Lori Sullivan truly had the fest come together without too many bumps in the road.

Richie Supa’s  RIR Unplugged began the festival and the RIR All-Star closed the celebration.  The entire day was filled with nonstop musical energy, including the recovery comedian Steve Johnson.

I got to meet some very cool people from the recovery community that work as hard as RIR when it comes to caring a message of hope. Reach Out Recovery, In The Rooms,Faces and Voices, Young People In Recovery Foundation,12 Palms Recovery Center and Clearbrook Treatment Centers of PA. Not counting the artists displaying some very cool art.

The overall emotion from the weekend was that recovery, fun, and gratitude are very much alive and well at the RIR festivals and concerts.  When everyone comes together with a common vision of celebrating a clean life, it makes it even more fun to rock-and-roll.

He’s Such a Good Boy

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

I don’t want the good boy that is hidden behind the drugs to die.

Sometimes it helps to read someone else’s true story of addiction, and think about how things could be handled, or should be handled. Here is a recent story I received, that highlights some important aspects of detox, rehab, and recovery:

My grandson turned 21 last week. He needs help, but he refuses to go to any place where he will have to stay until better. He was a good boy. He is in the trades and good at it. He attempts to work, and does well, but then stops getting up on time and misses work. Now on the drugs he has ruined his pickup truck, and lost many of his friends. His girlfriend left him and is now with his best friend.

Krokodil Drug (desomorphine) in the USA: Why It Matters

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

We are hearing reports that the dangerous and hideous drug krokodil is here, in the US. Initial reports of possible krokodil use started 2 years ago, but this week we are facing what may turn out to be the first confirmed death from krokodil in Oklahoma, after several reports in Illinois.

In 2010 we first heard graphic reports of “Krokodil” abused by addicts in Russia. The horrific images and stories of addicts so lost to hope that they willingly inject themselves with visibly destructive chemicals, while drug dealers watch them die, drew media attention. To addiction treatment professionals, this was evidence of the severe end game of an addict abandoned by society, left to rot, and powerless under the forces of chemical addiction and commercial manipulation.

Krokodil Drug (desomorphine) in the USA:Rockers In Recovery Krokodil, or desomorphine, is an opioid derived from morphine. It is also known as dihydrodesoxymorphine, once sold under the brand name Permonid. When codeine was deregulated in Russia a few years ago and sold over the counter, addicts seeking lower cost opioid highs experimented with codeine-containing medicines. They used any available chemical solvents to formulate desomorphine from codeine products, including gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner — or the cheapest of all: red phosphorous scraped off the heads of matches pulled from “free” matchbooks given away with cigarettes.

Addiction Counselors and Abstinence

Rockers In Recovery News Media Website
The American Psychological Association released a recent study in their journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors showing that up to half of addiction counselors deem it acceptable to allow alcohol abusing clients to have an occasional drink. This is a significant increase from about twenty years ago when a similar survey showed only one quarter of counselors willing to allow some alcohol use. With drugs of abuse, a similar number of counselors believed it was acceptable to allow moderate drug use as a step toward their ultimate treatment goal.

It is important to note that when counselors were asked if they would condone some drug or alcohol use in those diagnosed with dependence issues, far fewer did.

Gratitude Sweeps the Recovery Festival

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

Boundless Energy and Gratitude Sweeps the Festival, Again

The recovery process is a gradual step-by-step process.  With recovery, it takes a large portion of patience and an even greater serving of faith; just as it takes infinite patience and grace to follow through with the Festival of Gratitude.  November is gratitude month, and November 2, 2013 kicked off Rockers In Recovery’s 3rd annual festival of gratitude.

RIR has much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.  Not only is there boundless gratitude for everyone who participated and came to the festival, but for both Destination Hope and Sunrise Detox, both treatment facilities who have sponsored and supported RIR success through the past several years.

On November 2nd.

These guys are the best, if you are looking for an event that will bring people together to celebrate and enjoy the fellowship of recovery this is your group.

Top musicians, excellent programming, highly organized. you will not find a better group of musicians and organizers than this.

Jeanie R.

My boyfriend and I are both in recovery. We had never experienced anything like the RIR Festival previously. We both had such an amazing time.

I would love to become more involved in anything recovery based, especially things like what y’all are doing.

Please feel free to let me know if there are any service opportunities available. I stay pretty busy with work and raising my kiddos. But they are also being raised “in the rooms” so they might even be able to help as well.

I hope you have a blessed weekend!!!

Thanks again for all that you and the whole RIR gang do. You have touched my life in a profound way!!!

Acceptance

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

Most people have heard many, many times. The ability to apply it is a different story. Acceptance is understanding. In the recovery community, we often use acceptance in relation to accepting that some things in life cannot be changed.  So many people spend a lot of time being angry, hurt, or trying to change things they cannot change. It’s a waste of time and energy and only yields aggravation and unhappiness in return.

What acceptance does not mean is thinking that you’re a bad person because you behaved badly in your past. Bad, unhealthy behavior does not make a bad person. It’s just bad behavior. The amazing thing about bad behaviors is that you can discontinue them. If someone were a bad person, they wouldn’t feel the guilt and shame that comes at some point after they do something. “Bad” people don’t feel guilt and shame. In fact, they feel that their actions are logical and justified.

Rockers In RecoveryThe idea of acceptance is often distorted. The distortion occurs when we try to accept something that we can change. In this way, we hide behind a word as an excuse to not do the work to grow. The distortion occurs when we try to accept something that we can change as something we cannot. Something along the lines of “I’ve been using/drinking for 30 years, it’s too late for me”, “I’ll always screw up whatever I do”, or “I can’t help it, this is just how I am”.

Accepting yourself means accepting that you cannot change your past; who you were, what you did, or what you said. You have to accept that you cannot control your alcohol/drug use. You have to accept responsibility for choices you have made in the past and choices you will make in the future. You also have to accept the fact that as long as you are willing to do the work, you can change who you are today, what you do and who you become in the future. YOU choose who you are today, how you behave and the words you say. YOU choose who to want to become in the future.

Here is one of my favorite poems. Read it, re-read it, and keep it:

Self-Esteem
by Virginia Satir

I AM ME
In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me
Everything that comes out of me is authentically me
Because I alone chose it – I own everything about me
My body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions,
Whether they be to others or to myself – I own my fantasies,
My dreams, my hopes, my fears – I own all my triumphs and
Successes, all my failures and mistakes Because I own all of
Me, I can become intimately acquainted with me – by so doing
I can love me and be friendly with me in all my parts – I know
There are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other
Aspects that I do not know – but as long as I am
Friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously
And hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles
And for ways to find out more about me – However I
Look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever
I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically
Me – If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought
And felt turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is
Unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that
Which I discarded – I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do
I have the
tools to survive, to be close to others, to be
Productive to make sense and order out of the world of
People and things outside of me – I own me, and
therefore I can engineer me – I am me and
I AM OKAY

This is acceptance…owning all of you, good and bad; your thoughts, decisions, actions, and behaviors gives you the power to change. Accepting yourself is knowing that at the end of the day you can shape yourself into the kind of person you choose to be.
