Meet Simon Mason and the Hightown Pirates

Meet Hightown Pirates, your new favourite band.

Music Review By John Hollis: Hightown Pirates (London, UK) is a band formed by singer / songwriter, writer and raconteur Simon Mason also known for his acclaimed memoir Too High Too Far Too Soon. HIghtown Pirates debut album ‘Dry And High’ was released in 2017.

“I’ve falling in love with ‘Dry And High’, Simon puts his recovery based music in a way that is going to leave you with wanting more as it did me. I highly recommend ‘Dry And High’ for your music library and to be shared with the recovery community. This music is high energy and filled with the message of hope that Recovery Rocks. In my opinion a great selection of music for treatment centers to share with their clients.” Great Job Mate, Co-Founder Rockers In Recovery, John Hollis

After many years in Recovery, my friends and I would always find it a challenge to make meetings whether we were leaving visiting a relative, on vacation, leaving a customer office, at a conference and especially when we were on travel. We would go back to the hotel search for a local meeting and try to figure out what meeting we could go to. On many occasions, the meeting wasn’t at the location anymore or the I couldn’t make the time set for the meeting at the location.. 9 out of 10 times we just didn’t make a meeting. One day I was using Yelp on travel and the idea of having a SoberMap App for Recovery hit me. With smartphone so advanced, the idea of opening an App that would immediately give me meetings to choose from whether we were leaving a business meeting, a relative’s house, a sporting event etc… it would be great and there was no app to do it.

Recovering Addicts Gather At Festival To Put A Face On Recovery

By Marcella Kester – For Times Leader – WILKES-BARRE — Kirby Park was full of sobriety Saturday, as hundreds of recovering addicts flocked to the park for the Love of Recovery Festival.

The event featured musicians from Florida-based radio and production group Rockers In Recovery, as well as various speakers, vendors and more.

As Dr. Nicholas Colangelo walked around the park, he was greeted by dozens of attendees, each happily updating him with where they are at in their rehabilitation from drugs and alcohol. The Clearbrook Treatment Centers CEO said he was happy to play a part in staging the event for the first time.

“There’s a lot of people dying (from addiction),” Colangelo noted, “but there are also a lot of people getting better, too.”

Rockers In Recovery, founded by John Hollis in 2008, travels the country to participate in recovery-themed festivals through free concerts, podcasts, education and more. Colangelo said he first met Hollis about a decade ago, when he traveled to Florida to attend one of his events. Although Rockers In Recovery is for-profit, it works closely with addiction treatment centers near events they participate in, urging residents and businesses to support their hometown groups to help end addiction.

Hollis wanted to remind the public that people in recovery have a face and come from all walks of life — from doctors and lawyers to teachers and musicians. Read More

Wilkof Project – A Long Way Down (New Release)

Musical Guest; The Wilkof Project, will be sharing about life in recovery and their new release “A Long Way Down.”

The vision of The Wilkof Project was conceived in 2015 by vocalist/lead guitarist Matt Wilkof formerly of Another Black Day. Wilkof disbanded ABD in 2009 due to his destructive lifestyle and unforgiving pressures/pitfalls of the music industry. In 2011, Wilkof overcame his addiction to heroin and now spends his energy on helping those who struggle with this affliction. Through their passionate music and reflective lyrics based upon Wilkof’s personal journey of life, TWP spreads a message of hope to those who are need of a light in a dark world.

RIR- Radio Live (Episode 814) – Musician, Singer/Songwriter, Jack Spann -Topic? Jack’s new record “Beautiful Man From Mars” and his work on demo sessions for David Bowie‘s final album, Blackstar.  Jack Spann music has been compared to authentic pre-fame versions of Elton John or Billy Joel, James Taylor, Ray Charles, Ben Folds or even a latter day Joe Jackson.

Rolling piano and melodic delivery puts Spann on the piano bench firmly between Billy Joel and Elton John. The dramatic organ fills are reminiscent of the interchange one hears between Procol Harum’s Gary Brooker and Matthew Fischer. Partial Qoute by Ken Raisenen – From The Vaults – Ontonagon Herald on Spann’s last release Time, Time, Time, Time, Time.

2017 Unite To Fight Addiction Sponsor – Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson to shed a light on addiction recovery based songwriters.  Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions and have a whole lot of fun while doing it.

New live, new job, new guitar. I started writing and relearning with a fever pitch passion, but I couldn’t play out sober… unbelievable stage fright. With help of other musicians and my sponsor I worked through it.

I got involved with Rockers In Recovery® and it gave me a way to give back and show other addicts and alcoholics you can have fun in Recovery. I put together a family band with my son and grandson, three generations playing music how cool is that.

With the help of Rockers In Recovery I started Sobriety Unplugged to do smaller Unplugged venues . The music enhances my recovery and my recovery enhances my music.  For more information please contact Sobriety Unplugged.

“Recovery is a Process” and Rockers In Recovery has amassed some epic speakers on the topic. This is to help our south Florida community know that there is help, hope, and recovery is possible from addiction.

“At Enhanced Healing Wellness Center our mission is to provide dedicated, compassionate care to individuals and families affected by substance abuse problems while transforming the stigma around recovery through awareness and connection.

John Hollis – Music and Recovery

Co- Founder Rockers In Recovery, prevention/education for addiction and alcoholism through music.

Rockers In Recovery Co-Founder, John Hollis – Music and Recovery Radio – Episode 794

It was 2004 and I was stuck in a room drinking and drugging like a pig. I was using 24 hours a day 7 days a week. My state of mental health was off the chain to say the least. Deep down inside I was on a road to death and knew it and was really ok with it. It’s Always Darkest Before Dawn.

I was working in the Midwest and every night I would spend hours getting high, watching porn, and listening to music online. One night I was searching my favorite musical artist Eric Clapton. To my surprise up came a video of him talking about his recovery and how his life had changed. I was blown away, and started to listen to it over and over. This video of my musical hero gave me so much hope. I was near death and it took two more years to come into recovery. I always kept playing that video over and over in my head it gave me hope over the next two years in times of suicidal and morbid thinking.

Two years after I got sober in 2006, Rockers in Recovery® was formed in 2008 by Lori Welch Sullivan and Myself. What began as a radio program to spread the message of recovery through news, interviews, and music has grown into a multifaceted media and production company.

In 2010, I was invited by Kim Martin, Program Director of Crossroads Centre Antigua to broadcast live from Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. What an amazing day, the Rockers In Recovery® -Music Festivals vision was born that day. A way to carrying a message of Addiction Education & Awareness and do it through Rock-N-Roll.

On February 12, 2011 the vision came true, we did our first Education & Awareness music festival called love of recovery. We have gone on to produce twenty five Rockin’ Recovery concerts, festivals, and drug and alcohol addiction community meet and greets across the United States. Rockers in Recovery® now attracts thousands to our music festivals and reaches millions more through our online media reach. The message Rockers in Recovery® is spreading through rock ‘n’ roll: there is hope, addiction recovery is possible.

Drummer Sam Galindo – Music and Recovery

Drummer Sam Galindo - Music & Recovery;

Listen To Interview Click Arrow

Drummer Sam Galindo – Music and Recovery; My recovery started with Broward County Sheriff’s finally bringing me in for my last Main Jail detox May 13, 2015. Consequentially that’s also my clean date now. I had a fairly short stay of about 90 days, but it was not my first. After and offer of 5 years of prison, I reached out to a gentleman by the name of Mike Lieberworth who came in and spoke on my behalf. Long story short, I made it into halfway and into the program, after a little resistance from the disease of course. I have 20 months clean now and in that 20 months I found that no matter what, my idle hands are still the Devil’s playground.

I had to turn back to my first love which is music. What better way to tend to idle hands than putting some drumsticks back in em’!! I play every chance I can and I consider it my form of “Chaotic Meditation”. Anyone who has ever tried to convince me it’s anything other than meditation is quickly made a believer when I explain to them the feeling that playing music gives me. If you love music and you are in recovery, my best advice would be to never let it go. It’s goes hand and hand with my recovery and no one can take that connection away from me as long as I hold it in my heart as I always have.

Musician George Massengill – Treatment and Recovery

George Massengill of JourneyPure - Treatment & Recovery

Treatment & Recovery with Musician Singer/Songwriter, George Massengill of JourneyPure  I changed a lot of things in my life in 1988 starting with getting clean and went back to collage to receive a degree in Social Work and, I began to work as an alcohol and drug counselor and became licensed as a counselor. I still work in that field today.

George Massengill of JourneyPure - Treatment & RecoveryJourneyPure started with the goal to help others conquer their addictions and acquire the necessary skills to live a restored and sober life. Our inventive approach is one that is comprehensive and incorporates aspects of nutrition, fitness, and mental wellness into each program. To ensure personal recovery, each patient receives unique treatment that is personally developed to fit their specific co-occurring disorders.

My belief is that music is the truth!! It comes from a place in the soul, the enjoyment of it and the creation of it is pure …. No additives or preservatives… you either feel it or you don’t, and feeling it is all that counts!! I think Herb Crouch told me that or more importantly showed me that in his life, I hope I never forget that.

John Hollis - RIR Co-Founder

John Hollis – RIR Co-Founder

By John Hollis RIR Co-Founder – Addiction Recovery is more than just not using, we have to take on a new way of thinking and living. There are times I’ve lost focus of this. Letting the fear and resentments of the day clog the channel to my spirit can stifle my helping others. So getting some alone time and looking at my behaviors, my attitudes, my motives, and how I’m treating others is very important to my recovery. One of the ways I get grounded, I Listen to music.

Videos like Tim McGraw’s – Humble And Kind, Written by Lori Mckenna is one of those songs that helps me to see what’s important, the  song gives me hope, and it also gives me a kind of sober running beacon in real time to check against my self-centered desires. Music is one of my recovery tools and videos like Humble and Kind helps me to ask myself, how am I living my life today?

One part of the lyrics I love the most is;
“Don’t expect a free ride from no one
Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why:
Bitterness keeps you from flyin’
Always stay humble and kind”

Check out the video, let me know your thoughts?

Tim McGraw – The country star gets candid about his past dependence on “liquid courage” and what was at stake if he didn’t get sober. Huffington Post – 08/26/2015

“You can come up with a million excuses why you drink too much,” he said. “Lack of confidence, the success that came so quickly, and then some of the things you didn’t realize was trauma, I guess, back when you were 11… I think the older you get, the more you start realizing those things.”

As time went on, McGraw came to the harsh realization for himself.

“It got to the point where I knew that I drank too much,” he said. “I knew that it was affecting my personal relationships, it was affecting my professional relationships, it was affecting my family. It was turning me into a person that I didn’t want to be… I was at a point where I could lose everything that I had in my life, first and foremost, my family. It [was] time to stop. And I stopped.”

Sober since 2008, the night before embarking on another tour, McGraw said he had his last drink. “ I flew to Florida that morning from being wasted the night before, and started that tour. Haven’t drank since.” Read more @ How Tim McGraw’s Drinking Nearly Cost Him Everything

Sobriety Unplugged – The Impact

Main RIR Recovery Radio Partner Sponsorship

Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson

Sobriety Unplugged – Paul Stephen Wilson

Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson to shed a light on addiction recovery based songwriters.  Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions and have a whole lot of fun while doing it.

The desire to avoid experiencing and regulating intense emotions are major factors in substance abuse disorders (SUD) and relapse following treatment (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007). An important aspect of treatment is clients learning how to feel and tolerate their internal emotions without the use of substances. Music is an ideal way in which to evoke intense emotional states in people with SUD. This is a form of treatment that can help “individuals process strong emotional states in the absence of substance use”. (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007).

Substance use and music share an important commonality. They can alter consciousness (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010), provide direct and immediate instant gratification (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) and produce feelings of “bliss and serenity” (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013).

The experience of music therapy can elicit both conscious and unconscious emotions (Inselmann, 2007) (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012). Through the verbal processing of the musical experience, clients can now identify and put into words emotions they were previously unaware of or unable to express. Music can break through walls that restrict their capacity for recovery (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011) (Sergio Castillo-Pérez, 2010) (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013) (de l’Etoile, 2002).

Sobriety UnpluggedMusic therapy has been proven to produce positive outcomes for clients ambivalent or resistant to treatment or have difficulty expressing feelings. Music has the ability to influence thinking and feeling which are prerequisites for behavioral change (de l’Etoile, 2002) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012). Research shows that the experience of listening to the music, lyrics, and processing what they experienced reduces feelings of shame, depression, anxiety, isolation and guilt. Clients can gain mutual identification, acquisition of a new coping skill, and enhanced optimism and hope from this experience. (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (Sergio Castillo-Pérez, 2010) (Silverman, 2011) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011).

Sobriety Unplugged Case studies prove the effectiveness of utilizing music as part of the treatment experience. Music is more than just entertainment; it is a proven, beneficial intervention in treatment. Music and the therapy process can create behavioral changes as well as the ability to process and identify emotions: (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001) (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (de l’Etoile, 2002) (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011).

All research shows that simply listening to music does not have the same effect; it is the live experience and the process after that creates the intense impact. Clients that have difficulties with appropriate social interaction at the verbal and non-verbal level, lack of motivation for communication, poor relationships, lack of ability in sharing experiences and poor sense of self, will benefit most from this type of therapy. (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001). (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010). In other words, this therapeutic experience will improve the outcome of treatment for the substance abuse population.

Professionals in the substance abuse field are always looking for ways to improve the therapeutic experience for their clients. Key components of achieving and maintaining recovery are: motivation, optimism, hope, and coping skills (learning how to deal with and express emotions in a healthy way). Many times, clients have a difficult time opening up, expressing, and processing their emotions. Due to having limited time with clients (often 30 days in treatment), clinicians must look for effective ways in bringing about this process as quickly as they can so they can help the client begin the process of healing. RIR does this in a way that will engage the client, capture their attention, entertain them and have such a profound impact on their life; they can carry it with them always.

The Story: Sobriety Unplugged Musicians walk in capturing the undivided attention of everyone in the room. After all, this is not just a speaker coming in; this is RIR musicians, guitarists and song writers. Clients are looking forward to hearing their story and will listen intently as our musicians share their personal struggle with substance abuse and their journey to recovery. RIR musicians share their experiences in a way that will make them laugh, contemplate and often times cry.

The Music: Sobriety Unplugged musicians and sometimes a special guest will then perform; singing and playing songs about active addiction and recovery. The lyrics and music combined produce a multitude of emotional reactions, surprising the clients as the experience brings to light emotions they have had a difficult time expressing or perhaps were unaware of.

The Therapy: Clients have come for this very special treat looking forward to the break in routine. They have had RIR musical contributors come to perform just for them. Every emotion they have experienced has been natural; unintentional. This is entertainment, not therapy right? Actually, though they are unaware, this experience with the RIR musical contributor has created an amazing opportunity for emotional growth, gaining coping skills, knowledge, hope and the opportunity to walk away from this experience one step closer to their new lives. Jack Kelly CAP, who is familiar with RIR and the experience will now help the clients process the emotions they felt and discovered, the hope and motivation they found, and show them how they can use all of this as a coping skill both now and in the future as a tool in their recovery. Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions with a clinician in a group setting also allows the facility to bill as a group session.

Sobriety Unplugged – The Impact: The experience of RIR can be the beginning of therapy for clients who have a difficult time expressing themselves, bring forth emotions and experiences clients were previously unaware they had, give hope, add motivation and provide a different outlet for clients to express themselves. Clients can learn to channel their emotions and even escape from reality for a few moments without having to use a drink or drug to do so.

Sobriety Unplugged Musicians stories, lyrics about substance use, their struggles, and recovery allow clients to process through music what many can’t through other means; creating that opening and breaking down that wall. Specifically to SUD, music and the therapy that follows provide the opportunity for the client to access feelings that are both integral to their addiction and pose obstacles in recovery.

Remember “Sobriety Unplugged”, visits schools, sober events, conferences, sober houses, addiction detox centers, drug and alcohol treatment centers all over the United States. Sobriety Unplugged along with select members of the come to share their message of hope, and play an unplugged set of songs geared towards recovery.

John Hollis – RIR Co-Founder

By John Hollis, RIR Co-Founder – It was 2004 and I was stuck in a room drinking and drugging like a pig.

I always kept playing that video over and over in my head it gave me hope over the next two years in times of suicidal and morbid thinking.

eric-clapton-music-quotesTwo years after I got sober in 2006, Rockers in Recovery® was formed in 2008 by Lori Welch Sullivan and Myself.

John Hollis Founder of Rockers In Recovery

2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival

On February 12, 2011 the vision came true, we did our first Education & Awareness music festival called love of recovery. We have gone on to produce twenty seven concerts, festivals, and drug and alcohol addiction community meet and greets across the United States. Rockers in Recovery® now attracts thousands to our music festivals and reaches millions more through our online media reach. The message Rockers in Recovery® is spreading through rock ‘n’ roll: there is hope, addiction recovery is possible.

I thank Eric Clapton for being open about his recovery and for being a power of example to me to this day. Unbeknownst to me, through the work of my Higher Power, that experience helped me to shift my thinking towards recovery, it would also become many visions to a movement that would change my life and many others.

Free Recovery Rock Festivals Help Educate About Addiction

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

2017 Recovery Rock FestBy; Christopher Hollis – Opioids were involved in 28,647 deaths in 2014 and opioid overdoses have quadrupled since 2000.

Significant increases in drug overdose death rates were seen in the Northeast, Midwest and South Census Regions. In 2014, the five states with the highest rates of death due to drug overdose were West Virginia, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Kentucky and Ohio. States with statistically significant increases in the rate from 2013 to 2014 included Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

It’s time to bring education and awareness to the current Opioid/Heroin Epidemic and Rockers In Recovery® has planned six events for 2017 to do just that. This epidemic is devastating the United States as a whole, with hundreds of deaths a day nationwide currently. Here are some of the community meet and greets and festivals scheduled so far;

6th Annual Free Community Addiction Educational Meet and Greet – 02/10/17 Pembroke Pines,Florida
6th Annual Fl. Love of Recovery Free Music Festival – 02/11/17 Pembroke Pines, Florida
1st Annual Pa. – Love of Recovery Free Music Festival 09/08/17 – 09/09/17 Wilkes-Barre,Pennsylvania

*Each Festival has an additional event the night before called the “Free Community Addiction Educational Meet and Greet.”

EDUCATIONAL – It’s dedicated to provide the community with addiction prevention and education information to help families, community outreach leaders and anyone who suffers with drug addiction and alcoholism.

The thinking and actions around the RIR Meet & Greets are simple: educate and help people in need. The RIR teams up with addiction professionals known as recovery special event partners that are present at all of the Meet & Greets. The most important point is to provide answers to people seeking help.

“Recovery is a Process” and Rockers In Recovery® has amassed some epic speakers and some long term in recovery rockers on the topic. This is to help communities know that there is hope and they can find resources.

RIR is not a treatment center – Since it launched in 2008, Rockers in Recovery®, a for-profit media and production company, has attracted tens of thousands to its music festivals and reached millions more through its online reach. The message the organization is spreading through rock ‘n’ roll: there is hope, addiction recovery is possible.

Since the start of their music festivals in February of 2011, attendees can go right to the recovery information tent manned all day with addiction professionals to help everyone. Each RIR Festival has bands and solo acts along with a list of 10-minute addiction professional speakers in between bands. RIR is educating while having fun in a fun, loving environment. John Hollis, RIR Co- Founder

It’s Amazing, and they are so proud to see how since 2011 and twenty five of their own productions, the Rockers In Recovery® (RIR) concept of recovery concerts/festivals to carrying a message of Education & Awareness is working.

“This same message is now being duplicated by many in the addiction recovery advocacy movement groups like the October, 2015 Washington DC Unite to Face Addiction Rally (with Joe Walsh and other well know musicians) , the 2014 Fed Up Rally, and the 2016 SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week and Recovering Artists Worldwide(RAW – there is a charge for their events). It’s happening all over the United States. Since 2014 many treatment programs have even adopted as a modality in the form of RIR Unplugged, with some using the concept as primary treatment.  What an honor and we look forward to seeing many more use our unique form of addiction prevention and education”. Says John Hollis, RIR Co- Founder.

Quote by Tom Coderre, Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA (Feb.14, 2015): – “Rockers In Recovery® brings the private treatment sector, addiction education, and the addiction advocacy non-profit sector together in a unique way as no one else is doing anywhere in the United States. What makes RIR unique: the message is all around and through the universal language of music with some great rockers of our day. They combine it with educational speakers and advocacy groups. RIR brings it all together at their community addiction education meet and greets, and addiction awareness and prevention concerts/festivals.”

Clearbrook Treatment Centers – “I would like to express our gratitude for the tremendous support and attention Rockers In Recovery has garnered for us. Combining Music with Recovery Media along with recovery music events was a remarkable vision and gift that Lori Sullivan and John Hollis Founders of Rockers In Recovery Radio & Productions has shared with us. The passion and dedication of Lori and John’s organization is inspiring! John and the team touch millions of people in recovery every day with their song of hope. Thank you Lori and John  for all you do for us and everyone battling this disease!” – Clearbrook Treatment Centers of Pennsylvania – CEO, Dr. Nick Colangelo

They do free community education concerts through Rock-N-Roll all over the United States. Some are just to name a few, the D&R Theater Aberdeen Washington, to a standing room only crowd with the same results at the luxury hotel in the heart of Las Vegas, known as the Bellagio. RIR was Rockin’ the 2014 RecoveryWalks at Penns Landing, Philadelphia, Pa. in front of 23,000 people, along with the 4th Annual RIR Music Festival in Feb 2015. RIR also donated the RIR Band & production services to the Hope All Day Festival in New Jersey 2015. This was to help raise funds for the Hope All Day Foundation.

14102691_10211086995637623_5925307549568595138_nRIR just came off the road from their Stop Overdose – Opioid/Heroin Education and Awareness meet and greet & “Maine Love Of Recovery Music Festival” which was held at Clark’s Cove Farm in Walpole, ME. On August 26 & 27, 2016 both events were Free to all.

The Special Guest Speakers were Sara Gideon (Freeport), Maine Assistant House Majority Leader and Dr. Kimberly Johnson (Washington, DC), Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment at SAMHSA.

Addiction Education & Awareness Concept Through Music Is Working

Main RIR Recovery Radio Partner Sponsorship

It’s Amazing, and we are so proud to see how since 2011 (going on twenty nine of our own productions) the Rockers In Recovery® (RIR) concept of recovery concerts/festivals to carrying a message of Education & Awareness is working.

This same message is now being duplicated by many in the addiction recovery advocacy movement groups like the October, 2015 Washington DC Unite to Face Addiction Rally (with Joe Walsh and other well know musicians) , the 2014 Fed Up Rally, and now the 2016 SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week. It’s happening all over the United States. Since 2014/2015 many treatment programs have even adopted as a modality in the form of RIR Unplugged, with some using the concept as primary treatment.  What an honor and we look forward to seeing many more use our unique form of addiction prevention and education.

Tom Coderre ,Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA

    Tom Coderre

Feb.14, 2015, RIR Music Festival – Quote by Tom Coderre ,Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA ”Rockers In Recovery® brings the private treatment sector, addiction education, and the addiction advocacy non-profit sector together in a unique way as no one else is doing anywhere in the United States. What makes RIR unique, the message is all around and through the universal language of music with some great rockers of our day. They combine it with educational speakers and advocacy groups. RIR brings it all together at their community addiction education meet and greets, and addiction awareness and prevention concerts/festivals”

Music Helps Addicts Feel Emotions Again

Main RIR Recovery Radio Partner Sponsorship

“Hurt” by Johnny Cash

John Hollis Co-Founder “Rockers In Recovery®”.

By John Hollis, Rockers In Recovery® Co-Founder –  “Hurt” by Johnny Cash – This is a song written by Trent Reznor first released on Nine Inch Nails’ 1994 album called The Downward Spiral. I’m a person in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, and this video hits me right to my core. Seeing what seems to be Johnny Cash’s life flashing before me in this video and knowing Cash’s own struggles with the same demons as myself, I can clearly feel the pain of his past. It was like he was passing on his message of a lifestyle that didn’t work. A warning of sorts to other suffers afflicted by the same demon’s.

It’s no wonder “Hurt” went on to commercial and critical acclaim. It attracted praise from Reznor for its “sincerity and meaning” while ending up being one of Cash’s final hits released before his death, who at the time was 11 years clean. The related Mark Romanek music video is considered one of the greatest of all time by publications such as NME.

In my opinion this is a addiction educational musical piece that should be played in treatment centers across the world. I believe it can help many in early recovery feel again and also see their own destructive active addiction behaviors. It may even sway a person actively using to say, “WOW” maybe I need help. I know the “Hurt” video has been a big therapeutic tool for my own recovery. This video helped me to feel emotions again, after being emotionally dead for years. It also helped me to see all the loved ones and friends that were left scorched by my addiction.

Thank you to Johnny Cash, Michael Trent Reznor, known professionally as Trent Reznor, an American singer-songwriter, record producer, film score composer, and Mark Romanek who’s dedication as a American filmmaker, brought Johnny Cash’s heartbreaking cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” on to a Grammy Award for Best Music Video. Rockin’ Roll and Recovery Come Together In The Palm Beaches

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

Archstone Recovery Center Archstone Recovery Center of the Palm Beaches is proud to recognize and support Rockers-in Recovery. Their goal…. to provide education and support about addiction, as well as, drug and alcohol rehab treatment options to different communities across the United States. Rockers in Recovery (RIR) is an organization with the sole mission of providing prevention and education to anyone who suffers with drug addiction and/or alcoholism. Most importantly the message of “Rockers In Recovery” is that addiction prevention and awareness mixed with “HAVING FUN” in recovery is indeed possible!! How they do this, is through several concert and festival fundraisers per year known as “Rockers In Recovery Festival/Concerts”.

Archstone Recovery Center understands that with education comes better choices…education provides power. It is one of the things that first drew us to RIR. They provide fun events that allow people to enjoy themselves while they provide valuable recovery information.

The decision to seek help and commit to treatment is a difficult one for many people. “Can I do it”, Will it last”, “Will my family support me”, “Where should I go for treatment”…….these and many more questions run through the mind. “How do I decide now is the time”….the answer everyone seeks, can only be answered by you….and the more information you possess about credible and ethical treatment facilities you have, the better decision you will make. This is the kind of information that RIR provides.

We also personalize your treatment plan based on whether you’re a man or woman since each sex experiences addiction differently. We also have a youth program for younger patients looking to make a change in their lives. If you’re interested in more information about our beautiful rehabilitation center of the Palm Beaches, browse our website or get to know Sally Gallen Sweeney by calling 561- 588-8323.

Rockers In Recovery – 2015 Year In Review

2015 RIR-Year In Review

Rockers In Recovery – 2015 Year In Review

Where are we without a community? A community is what helps shape who we are and gives us values and helps strengthen our beliefs. Merriam-Webster defines “Community” as: an interacting population of various kinds of individuals (as species) in a common location.

Rockers In Recovery (RIR) is a community of dedicated people who live to carry a message of hope to addicts and alcoholics and their families who all are suffering. RIR shared common goal of spreading hope and enlightenment across the country has turned out to be something RIR never expected. We are not a treatment program. RIR is an organization with the sole mission to provide prevention and education to anyone who suffers with drug addiction and alcoholism. We do this through our Free Community Addiction Educational Meet & Greets and Free Community Music Festivals/Concerts

We also help educate many through our Multiple Media addiction/education informational based websites and Social Media platforms too. It all started in January 2008 doing interviews on RIR Addiction Talk Radio and 8 years later our addiction/education message is presented through the following; live concerts and festivals, community meet & greets, social media posting, RIR & Guest blogging, articles in the RIR magazine, (in print and online), RIR Live Concert and Event Streaming. This makes it easy for our addiction/education message to reach millions of people globally with just a click of a mouse.

Education is the key to unlock the door of freedom and Rockers In Recovery is dedicated to addiction recovery education through music, news, interviews, events, and festivals taking place within our communities across the United States.  We also get to help thousands face to face at our concerts, festivals and events and here are some places over 2015 we did just that;

The 12 Step Stigma – Lepers Among Lepers

Lori SullivanPost by Lori Sullivan, Co-Founder Rockers In Recovery;

Many of us in the recovery world are trying to change the stigma regarding people with addiction to the “normal” people in the world who don’t understand, yet we still have the stigma in our own RECOVERY COMMUNITIES!!

Here I am after just celebrating 17 years of recovery and I can say I am amazed…but not in a good way. What I have seen in the last several years within the recovery communities makes me sick. People who have taken away from what the founding members of AA created by putting in their own ideals and just plain watering down what is considered by many a “God inspired” thing.

Just yesterday I saw where a newcomer posted on FB how they didn’t understand how a meeting room could deny a person a AA Big Book because she was a relapser and how she needed to pay for it. There were of course the people trying to be funny. One person who responded with “maybe she collects them to sell”…. Really folks? This is a woman that keeps trying to get recovery by coming back time after time only to be told “sorry you’re a relapser so you’ll have to pay for your book”. Really? This is a woman screaming for help…not just asking. Why do I say this? Because it takes REAL courage to come back to some of the rooms of today because of the people in it. It took real courage for this woman to ask for a book. No wonder people who are struggling with addiction either give up and continue to use till they die or they just commit suicide.

6th Annual - Love of Recovery Music FestivalI was a chronic relapser at one point and I don’t forget that “There only by the grace of God could go I”. I had experienced peoples comments like “oh your back…what cha add another minute to your story?” Luckily I just kept trying REGARDLESS OF WHAT SOME PEOPLE SAID and with God’s help and the help of some really good people in the program. Here I am today a Co-founder of an organization that was created to help people and to show them (especially the young people) that recovery is possible regardless of where you come from, and it can be fun, not the doom and gloom that I thought it was when I attended my first AA meeting at the ripe age of 20 years. My first drink was at twelve and my first of many alcohol related blackouts was at age 15. That was 1978 and I remember that meeting clear as a bell today. It was a room filled with all older people passing a microphone around (I was very shy without my liquid courage) so I wanted nothing to do with that. I sat till the end meeting as many shared their experience, strength, and hope. After the meeting some people gave me a Big Book and told me to come back. Very kind people. But I wasn’t ready I was only there to appease my parents so they wouldn’t throw me out of their house. So on I went trying controlled drinking and using on and off for years at times achieving at times 22 months or 2 ½ years before relapsing. Many times when I relapsed I felt like a rubber band that snapped. Never seeing it coming. I didn’t plan it…but it still kept happening. I experienced the jails and institutions. This went on till September 14, 1999. They say some a sicker than others and I was one of them. I was homeless many times over a four year period at one point in my life, and stayed out there because I found that at least I wasn’t being judged by those around me.

Maybe this is why I’m for the underdogs. The people who relapse over and over but still keep trying. That in its self takes real courage. See I was taught that at anytime, anywhere if a hand reaches out…I AM RESPONSIBLE. I always say “where there is breath there is hope”. What can I do to help them not give up? Trust me I’ve been hurt in this belief many times and in many ways. I’ve even fallen short myself because of my hurt and anger. But God always has brought me back to what I believe. The belief is no matter what don’t give up on a fellow human being and I will continue to stand on this belief because I know deep down there is good in most human beings. I have had to learn to separate the addiction (the dark side) and all the sick behaviors that go with it, for the human being filled with the goodness that GOD created. GOD doesn’t make junk.

RIR-All-Star-Band1  Yes, some are sicker than others, and trust me it is both outside and INSIDE the rooms of recovery TODAY. I have seen the sickest of the sick who state they are in “long term recovery” yet judge people who were in recovery and because they relapsed (usually from mental, physical, or spiritual issues or all the above) and the insanity that comes with it. They stand in judgement of that person’s character while they were using, or while in a dry drunk. Or worse yet, the person has found his or hers recovery again (by the Grace of God) and these people continue to kill them with their tongues and their better than thou attitudes, agendas and egos. Even more concerning is some of them are now treatment centers owners and government employees in long term recovery payed to help others with addiction, SCARY. I guess they have forgotten where they came from or they never experienced a really low bottom or maybe their recovery isn’t as solid as one would think. I would think that with long term recovery there would also be some maturity, not the behaviors of grade school or high school students…talking about a person to their clones’ to persuade others to not like this person or that person and if they do then they can’t associate with them OR it would be a conflict of interest! What?? A conflict of whose interest? If that’s what the long term recovery has made them (sickos filled with agendas, ego’s and afraid of the relapser) then it’s no wonder people stay away from the rooms of recovery after they relapse. Especially the ones that had obtained long term recovery and then relapsed. He or she are the ones that just end up killing themselves sometimes quickly sometimes slowly over the sick attitudes and behaviors of some of the people IN RECOVERY!! It’s so sad. I guess that’s why there are those special sponsors that take on the challenge of a chronic relapser.

Then you have the people who put a time frame on a person’s recovery with things like I’m a person in “Long Term Recovery” or “sorry but you can’t share because you don’t have enough time” must be a six months or year before you can share.  No sorry you can’t join this recovery committee you don’t have enough time. Where did that come from? Who am I to put a time limit on when someone can carry a message of hope and what might be THEIR purpose to stay?

RIR Music FestWhere would we be today if the founders of AA (Bill Wilson and Bob Smith) and the founding members had the attitudes of today? I can tell you…there wouldn’t have been anything. Period. Just what they already had, jails, institutions, and inevitably DEATH. If someone wanted help, they got them through the steps as quickly as possible many in a day! Then out the door to help another. They never gave up on the sick and suffering inside and outside the rooms and that included the families. I have never heard of them excluding someone who relapsed. Back then they would pay that person a call to see how they were doing (in person) and see if they could help. They didn’t wait for the person to call them when they were ready. But if the person wasn’t ready they prayed for them, and then wasted no time working with another, because they didn’t want to spoil a future opportunity if it presented itself at later date. Hey they at least planted the seed of HOPE even if it’s a mustard seed.

All I can say is if you don’t have something nice to say then say nothing at all. Something most of us learned as children…words hurt and words can Kill. People who do this in recovery only show me that they might not have had a drink or drug in quite some time, but they truly aren’t practicing the spiritual principles that was freely given to them.

In closing I want to say that I thank all the good people I have met during my recovery journey. You have been instrumental in my personal recovery as well as helping me carry the message of hope (without judgement) in my business. You are all winners in my book because you believe as I do that we all have to work together for the common goal to help others afflicted with the disease of addiction regardless of who they are and where they’ve been. For all the others I leave them to God and pray that they don’t kill someone.

God Bless us all as we trudge this happy road of recovery!

Rockin Recovery – Rocks For Recovery

Rockin’ Recovery A Celebration Of Gratitude

Richie Supa – Paid Artist

Where are we without a community?  A community is what helps shape who we are and gives us values and helps strengthen our beliefs.  Merriam-Webster defines “Community” as: an interacting population of various kinds of individuals (as species) in a common location.

Rockers In Recovery (RIR) is a community of dedicated people who live drug-free with a shared common goal of shedding hope and enlightenment across the country – even world wide.  RIR is an incorporated, non-profit organization with the sole mission to provide support and funding for musicians and anyone else who suffers with any addiction.  The goal is to educate and support people about addiction, as well as the forms of addiction treatment.

Liberty Devitto and the Slim KingsRIR encourages interaction and mutual support with its donors and sponsors to achieve meaningful and effective communication.  RIR strives for consistent mutual support with their sponsors and supporters.  Communication between the RIR organization and their sponsors and supporters is held high in regard.

The essence of RIR is to be a pro-active, positive, drug-free community reaching thousands of people nation-wide.  The mission of RIR is to be drug-free organization where people can have fun without using drugs and alcohol.  RIR may be drug-free, but it is not affiliated with any 12-step groups like AA or NA.

Just in the past few months, RIR has teamed up on a community level to help a part of NYC that was devastated from Hurricane Sandy.  In addition to a benefit concert, RIR did another community event at a local Connecticut school to benefit a street-level non-profit business.  The last venue RIR put together was a benefit for the Special Olympics of South Florida and the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County in March 2013.

Recovery is not only about helping yourself; it is about who you can help as well.  When Hurricane Sandy struck NYC, people didn’t only just help themselves, but also recovery efforts came far and wide from many people – that is the soul of recovery, to help other people and pay it forward.

Recovery is having the power to get your life back by letting go to the aspects of life to a higher power.  By relinquishing control to the things we cannot change, we realize there is more fulfillment and empowerment when we ask for help and return it by helping others in ways we can.

Music News Concert,Art,and Movie FestivalRIR holds a series of events and concerts each year known as the “Rockers In Recovery Live Concert Series,” which combines the RIR All-Star Band with other top notch musicians who are also on the path of recovery as well.  Not only is there a common thread of recovery shared among the musicians, but also the commonality of having a good time sharing and singing songs through the night in a drug and alcohol-free zone.

RIR also invites other musicians who are either in recovery or support recovery to help spread the message of hope through music.  The most important message that RIR conveys is that having fun is completely doable and possible when you combine treatment and education, because all you need is 100% mutual support of each other.  Support is not a one-way street.

If you want proof that people can have fun without alcohol and drugs, watch the incredible RIR RockStar Super Star Band, and guests, in action at the next concert because their energy redefines the words enthusiastic and lively.

The paid members of the RIR All-Star Band included, Ricky Byrd (Joan Jett and the Blackhearts), Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel), Richie Supa (Aerosmith),  Kasim Sulton (Blue Oyster Cult and Todd Rundgren), Christine Ohlman (Saturday Night Live Band), and Mark Stein (Vanilla Fudge).

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE

A Theatrical Trailer from Greg Williams.

THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE IS A FEATURE documentary film about the over 23 million Americans living in long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction. Deeply entrenched social stigma have kept recovery voices silent and faces hidden for decades. The vacuum has been filled with sensational mass media depictions of people with addiction that perpetuate a lurid fascination with the dysfunctional side of what is a preventable and treatable health condition.

The Anonymous People 23 million American Heroes In RecoveryJust like women with breast cancer, or people with HIV/AIDS, a grass roots social justice movement is emerging. Courageous addiction recovery advocates have come out of the shadows and are organizing to end discrimination and move toward recovery-based solutions.

The moving story of The Anonymous People is told through the faces and voices of citizens, leaders, volunteers, corporate executives, public figures, and celebrities who are laying it all on the line to save the lives of others just like them. This passionate new public recovery movement aims to transform public opinion, engage communities and elected officials, and finally shift problematic policy toward lasting solutions.
