SoberMap – Immediately Access 12 Step Meetings

SoberMap App

SoberMap App, Immediately Access 12 Step meetings in your vicinity, talking SoberMap with CEO and Founder John P.

After many years in Recovery, my friends and I would always find it a challenge to make meetings whether we were leaving visiting a relative, on vacation, leaving a customer office, at a conference and especially when we were on travel. We would go back to the hotel search for a local meeting and try to figure out what meeting we could go to. On many occasions, the meeting wasn’t at the location anymore or the I couldn’t make the time set for the meeting at the location.. 9 out of 10 times we just didn’t make a meeting. One day I was using Yelp on travel and the idea of having a SoberMap App for Recovery hit me. With smartphone so advanced, the idea of opening an App that would immediately give me meetings to choose from whether we were leaving a business meeting, a relative’s house, a sporting event etc… it would be great and there was no app to do it.

Recovering Addicts Gather At Festival To Put A Face On Recovery

21730793_1531327356911133_8678988630208618981_n

By Marcella Kester – For Times Leader – WILKES-BARRE — Kirby Park was full of sobriety Saturday, as hundreds of recovering addicts flocked to the park for the Love of Recovery Festival.

The event featured musicians from Florida-based radio and production group Rockers In Recovery, as well as various speakers, vendors and more.

As Dr. Nicholas Colangelo walked around the park, he was greeted by dozens of attendees, each happily updating him with where they are at in their rehabilitation from drugs and alcohol. The Clearbrook Treatment Centers CEO said he was happy to play a part in staging the event for the first time.

“There’s a lot of people dying (from addiction),” Colangelo noted, “but there are also a lot of people getting better, too.”

Rockers In Recovery, founded by John Hollis in 2008, travels the country to participate in recovery-themed festivals through free concerts, podcasts, education and more. Colangelo said he first met Hollis about a decade ago, when he traveled to Florida to attend one of his events. Although Rockers In Recovery is for-profit, it works closely with addiction treatment centers near events they participate in, urging residents and businesses to support their hometown groups to help end addiction.

Hollis wanted to remind the public that people in recovery have a face and come from all walks of life — from doctors and lawyers to teachers and musicians. Read More

Wilkof Project – A Long Way Down (New Release)

Musical Guest; The Wilkof Project, will be sharing about life in recovery and their new release “A Long Way Down.”

The vision of The Wilkof Project was conceived in 2015 by vocalist/lead guitarist Matt Wilkof formerly of Another Black Day. Wilkof disbanded ABD in 2009 due to his destructive lifestyle and unforgiving pressures/pitfalls of the music industry. In 2011, Wilkof overcame his addiction to heroin and now spends his energy on helping those who struggle with this affliction. Through their passionate music and reflective lyrics based upon Wilkof’s personal journey of life, TWP spreads a message of hope to those who are need of a light in a dark world.

His boundless energy, charisma, presence, and sense of humor are contagious. 2017 Unite To Fight Addiction - Sobriety Unplugged

Listen To Interview Click Arrow

2017 Unite To Fight Addiction Sponsor – Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson to shed a light on addiction recovery based songwriters.  Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions and have a whole lot of fun while doing it.

New live, new job, new guitar. I started writing and relearning with a fever pitch passion, but I couldn’t play out sober… unbelievable stage fright. With help of other musicians and my sponsor I worked through it.

I got involved with Rockers In Recovery® and it gave me a way to give back and show other addicts and alcoholics you can have fun in Recovery. I put together a family band with my son and grandson, three generations playing music how cool is that.

With the help of Rockers In Recovery I started Sobriety Unplugged to do smaller Unplugged venues . The music enhances my recovery and my recovery enhances my music.  For more information please contact Sobriety Unplugged.

“Recovery is a Process” and Rockers In Recovery has amassed some epic speakers on the topic. This is to help our south Florida community know that there is help, hope, and recovery is possible from addiction.

Lyle Fried (The Shores) – 2017 Unite To Fight Addiction

Lyle Fried (The Shores) – 2017 Unite To Fight Addiction

RIR Radio – Lyle Fried Recorded Live; Unite To Fight Addiction

Guest speaker Lyle Fried CEO & Founder at The Shores Treatment & Recovery recorded live at the Rockers In Recovery 2017 Unite To Fight Addiction.

Lyle is a Board-Certified Addictions Professional, an Internationally Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor, an Approved Training Provider for the Florida Certification Board, and a Certified Health Coach. Because of his experience and industry knowledge he continues to be a regular and featured speaker at various industry events.

Lyle started his journey working in treatment by entering a program for his own addiction in the 90s. His first experience in treatment was as a cash-pay client in a high-end residential facility that “graduated” him as soon as his money ran out. About 3 months after being sent to a ¾-way home that was overrun with drugs, he relapsed and felt hopeless. Fortunately, a family friend found him a bed at a center for homeless men with addictions. After graduating a year-long program, Lyle felt compelled to give back and began doing service work. Quickly this turned into a passion to help others that led to study the treatment industry top to bottom. He learned state statutes and regulations, and studied counseling practices from several angles. This eventually led him back to school for a degree in psychology. It became Lyle’s passion to learn how to provide the best care possible and be able to treat people for the duration they needed as an individual, not the duration their bank account mandated.

Ken Seeley (A&E Intervention) – 2017 Unite To Fight Addiction

Ken Seeley , CIP,BRI ll ,RAS,CATA – A&E Intervention

RIR Radio – Ken Seeley Recorded Live; Unite To Fight Addiction

2017 Rockers In Recovery – Unite To Fight Addiction, with guest Ken Seeley, interventionist and author. He is best known for his appearances on the A&E reality show, Intervention. Certified as a CIP, CCMI-M, RAS, CATC , Seeley himself has been sober since July 14, 1989. Since then, he has worked full-time in the business of recovery.

Seeley is the author of Face It and Fix It, published by HarperOne in 2009. The book is about overcoming the denial that leads to common addictions while bringing guidance to those struggling with addiction. Face It and Fix It has been said to “leave you with a greater sense of self-awareness and the skills you need to both improve your relationships and to live the life you deserve”.

Seeley has remained involved, professionally and personally, in recovery since 1989. In an early episode of Intervention he revealed he was once addicted to crystal meth. He is a Certified Intervention Professional, Master’s Level Case Manager/Interventionist, Registered Addiction Specialist, and Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor. and works to save lives every day as the founder of Intervention-911, a service specializing not just in interventions but also in finding appropriate treatment centers for each kind of addict. Today, Seeley lives with his partner, Eric McLaughlin in Palm Springs,”Alcohol & Drug Intervention Services”. Intervention 911. Retrieved 2013-02-16.

Today, Ken still derives the greatest personal satisfaction from the hundreds of interventions he has conducted, organized, or facilitated through Intervention 911. In 2007, Ken held one of the first training for interventionists in London and now conducts up to five intervention training’s a year. After years in the recovery industry, Ken realized that recovery is a process and takes time. Addicts do not stay sober with just an intervention and treatment; it is all about the continuum of care and subsequent follow-up, just like any other illness. In 2008, Intervention911 initiated the RAP program which supports the recovery process for addicts and their families for one to five years.

In 2011, Seeley opened Ken Seeley Communities, a sober living community in Palm Springs, CA, and in 2015 opened an Intensive Out-Patient Program to help create the seamless continuum of care to support the person suffering with an addiction. By offering services pre and post treatment, Seeley has sought to provide all the supportive services around treatment. As you can see, Seeley’s personal experience of addiction and recovery fuels his desire to impact others in similar situations. Ken grasps the full understanding of the addict’s behavior. His innate compassion for fellow addicts continually bolsters his ability to connect and communicate with addicts and their families. Seeley has applied his personal struggle with addiction to the intervention equation. This is an asset that has become a valuable catalyst in Intervention 911’s and Ken Seeley Community’s impressive results.

Seeley’s remarkable success rate has turned him into one of the most sought-after interventionists in the country. Doctors and health care professionals look to people like Ken to solve their patient’s addiction and mental health issues. His knowledge and unique perspective have also made him the #1 go-to expert on the subject of addiction and intervention with the media, where he’s a regular contributor for CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC, and many others.

Drummer Sam Galindo – Music and Recovery

Drummer Sam Galindo - Music & Recovery;

Listen To Interview Click Arrow

Drummer Sam Galindo – Music and Recovery; My recovery started with Broward County Sheriff’s finally bringing me in for my last Main Jail detox May 13, 2015. Consequentially that’s also my clean date now. I had a fairly short stay of about 90 days, but it was not my first. After and offer of 5 years of prison, I reached out to a gentleman by the name of Mike Lieberworth who came in and spoke on my behalf. Long story short, I made it into halfway and into the program, after a little resistance from the disease of course. I have 20 months clean now and in that 20 months I found that no matter what, my idle hands are still the Devil’s playground.

I had to turn back to my first love which is music. What better way to tend to idle hands than putting some drumsticks back in em’!! I play every chance I can and I consider it my form of “Chaotic Meditation”. Anyone who has ever tried to convince me it’s anything other than meditation is quickly made a believer when I explain to them the feeling that playing music gives me. If you love music and you are in recovery, my best advice would be to never let it go. It’s goes hand and hand with my recovery and no one can take that connection away from me as long as I hold it in my heart as I always have.

Musician George Massengill – Treatment and Recovery

George Massengill of JourneyPure - Treatment & Recovery

Treatment & Recovery with Musician Singer/Songwriter, George Massengill of JourneyPure  I changed a lot of things in my life in 1988 starting with getting clean and went back to collage to receive a degree in Social Work and, I began to work as an alcohol and drug counselor and became licensed as a counselor. I still work in that field today.

George Massengill of JourneyPure - Treatment & RecoveryJourneyPure started with the goal to help others conquer their addictions and acquire the necessary skills to live a restored and sober life. Our inventive approach is one that is comprehensive and incorporates aspects of nutrition, fitness, and mental wellness into each program. To ensure personal recovery, each patient receives unique treatment that is personally developed to fit their specific co-occurring disorders.

My belief is that music is the truth!! It comes from a place in the soul, the enjoyment of it and the creation of it is pure …. No additives or preservatives… you either feel it or you don’t, and feeling it is all that counts!! I think Herb Crouch told me that or more importantly showed me that in his life, I hope I never forget that.

Sobriety Unplugged – The Impact

Main RIR Recovery Radio Partner Sponsorship

Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson

Sobriety Unplugged – Paul Stephen Wilson

Sobriety Unplugged Created By Paul Stephen Wilson to shed a light on addiction recovery based songwriters.  Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions and have a whole lot of fun while doing it.

The desire to avoid experiencing and regulating intense emotions are major factors in substance abuse disorders (SUD) and relapse following treatment (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007). An important aspect of treatment is clients learning how to feel and tolerate their internal emotions without the use of substances. Music is an ideal way in which to evoke intense emotional states in people with SUD. This is a form of treatment that can help “individuals process strong emotional states in the absence of substance use”. (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007).

Substance use and music share an important commonality. They can alter consciousness (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010), provide direct and immediate instant gratification (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) and produce feelings of “bliss and serenity” (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013).

The experience of music therapy can elicit both conscious and unconscious emotions (Inselmann, 2007) (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012). Through the verbal processing of the musical experience, clients can now identify and put into words emotions they were previously unaware of or unable to express. Music can break through walls that restrict their capacity for recovery (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011) (Sergio Castillo-Pérez, 2010) (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013) (de l’Etoile, 2002).

Sobriety UnpluggedMusic therapy has been proven to produce positive outcomes for clients ambivalent or resistant to treatment or have difficulty expressing feelings. Music has the ability to influence thinking and feeling which are prerequisites for behavioral change (de l’Etoile, 2002) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012). Research shows that the experience of listening to the music, lyrics, and processing what they experienced reduces feelings of shame, depression, anxiety, isolation and guilt. Clients can gain mutual identification, acquisition of a new coping skill, and enhanced optimism and hope from this experience. (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (Sergio Castillo-Pérez, 2010) (Silverman, 2011) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011).

Sobriety Unplugged Case studies prove the effectiveness of utilizing music as part of the treatment experience. Music is more than just entertainment; it is a proven, beneficial intervention in treatment. Music and the therapy process can create behavioral changes as well as the ability to process and identify emotions: (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001) (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010) (Baker, Gleadhill, & Dingle, 2007) (de l’Etoile, 2002) (Solanki, Zafar, & Rastogi, 2013) (Mössler, Assmus, Heldal, Fuchs, & Gold, 2012) (McCaffrey, Edwards, & Fannon, 2011).

All research shows that simply listening to music does not have the same effect; it is the live experience and the process after that creates the intense impact. Clients that have difficulties with appropriate social interaction at the verbal and non-verbal level, lack of motivation for communication, poor relationships, lack of ability in sharing experiences and poor sense of self, will benefit most from this type of therapy. (Bonde & Wilgram, 2001). (Aldridge & Fachner, 2010). In other words, this therapeutic experience will improve the outcome of treatment for the substance abuse population.

Professionals in the substance abuse field are always looking for ways to improve the therapeutic experience for their clients. Key components of achieving and maintaining recovery are: motivation, optimism, hope, and coping skills (learning how to deal with and express emotions in a healthy way). Many times, clients have a difficult time opening up, expressing, and processing their emotions. Due to having limited time with clients (often 30 days in treatment), clinicians must look for effective ways in bringing about this process as quickly as they can so they can help the client begin the process of healing. RIR does this in a way that will engage the client, capture their attention, entertain them and have such a profound impact on their life; they can carry it with them always.

The Story: Sobriety Unplugged Musicians walk in capturing the undivided attention of everyone in the room. After all, this is not just a speaker coming in; this is RIR musicians, guitarists and song writers. Clients are looking forward to hearing their story and will listen intently as our musicians share their personal struggle with substance abuse and their journey to recovery. RIR musicians share their experiences in a way that will make them laugh, contemplate and often times cry.

The Music: Sobriety Unplugged musicians and sometimes a special guest will then perform; singing and playing songs about active addiction and recovery. The lyrics and music combined produce a multitude of emotional reactions, surprising the clients as the experience brings to light emotions they have had a difficult time expressing or perhaps were unaware of.

The Therapy: Clients have come for this very special treat looking forward to the break in routine. They have had RIR musical contributors come to perform just for them. Every emotion they have experienced has been natural; unintentional. This is entertainment, not therapy right? Actually, though they are unaware, this experience with the RIR musical contributor has created an amazing opportunity for emotional growth, gaining coping skills, knowledge, hope and the opportunity to walk away from this experience one step closer to their new lives. Jack Kelly CAP, who is familiar with RIR and the experience will now help the clients process the emotions they felt and discovered, the hope and motivation they found, and show them how they can use all of this as a coping skill both now and in the future as a tool in their recovery. Using this experience as a way to elicit and process emotions with a clinician in a group setting also allows the facility to bill as a group session.

Sobriety Unplugged – The Impact: The experience of RIR can be the beginning of therapy for clients who have a difficult time expressing themselves, bring forth emotions and experiences clients were previously unaware they had, give hope, add motivation and provide a different outlet for clients to express themselves. Clients can learn to channel their emotions and even escape from reality for a few moments without having to use a drink or drug to do so.

Sobriety Unplugged Musicians stories, lyrics about substance use, their struggles, and recovery allow clients to process through music what many can’t through other means; creating that opening and breaking down that wall. Specifically to SUD, music and the therapy that follows provide the opportunity for the client to access feelings that are both integral to their addiction and pose obstacles in recovery.

Remember “Sobriety Unplugged”, visits schools, sober events, conferences, sober houses, addiction detox centers, drug and alcohol treatment centers all over the United States. Sobriety Unplugged along with select members of the come to share their message of hope, and play an unplugged set of songs geared towards recovery.

John Hollis – RIR Co-Founder

By John Hollis, RIR Co-Founder – It was 2004 and I was stuck in a room drinking and drugging like a pig. I was using 24 hours a day 7 days a week. My state of mental health was off the chain to say the least. Deep down inside I was on a road to death and knew it and was really ok with it. It’s Always Darkest Before Dawn.

I was working in the Midwest and every night I would spend hours getting high, watching porn, and listening to music online. One night I was searching my favorite musical artist Eric Clapton. To my surprise up came a video of him talking about his recovery and how his life had changed. I was blown away, and started to listen to it over and over. This video of my musical hero gave me so much hope. I was near death and it took two more years to come into recovery. I always kept playing that video over and over in my head it gave me hope over the next two years in times of suicidal and morbid thinking.

eric-clapton-music-quotesTwo years after I got sober in 2006, Rockers in Recovery® was formed in 2008 by Lori Welch Sullivan and Myself. What began as a radio program to spread the message of recovery through news, interviews, and music has grown into a multifaceted media and production company.

In 2010, I was invited by Kim Martin, Program Director of Crossroads Centre Antigua to broadcast live from Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. What an amazing day, the Rockers In Recovery® -Music Festivals vision was born that day. A way to carrying a message of  Addiction Education & Awareness and do it through Rock-N-Roll.

John Hollis Founder of Rockers In Recovery

2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival

On February 12, 2011 the vision came true, we did our first Education & Awareness music festival called love of recovery. We have gone on to produce twenty seven concerts, festivals, and drug and alcohol addiction community meet and greets across the United States. Rockers in Recovery® now attracts thousands to our music festivals and reaches millions more through our online media reach. The message Rockers in Recovery® is spreading through rock ‘n’ roll: there is hope, addiction recovery is possible.

I thank Eric Clapton for being open about his recovery and for being a power of example to me to this day. Unbeknownst to me, through the work of my Higher Power, that experience helped me to shift my thinking towards recovery, it would also become many visions to a movement that would change my life and many others.

Health and Wholeness – Treating Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Rockers In Recovery® – Media

The Shores Treatment CenterRockers In Recovery® has been around going on a decade and have seen many recovery treatment centers and recovery resources come and go. We have over the years worked with recovery organization’s we feel really want to help their clients.  You really need to be informed on a decision that can save a life of a loved one or even yourself.

We highly recommend Lyle R. Fried and The Shores Treatment and Recovery Center  and our Recovery Partners to help facilitate the early stages and physical symptoms of withdrawal through the process of early recovery and on to relapse prevention and successful transition back to a stable life.  Lyle and his staff are helping many in the recovery community to see the whole picture of drug and alcohol addiction.

From their beautiful Port St. Lucie, Florida, rehab facility, guests will experience a family atmosphere, individualized therapy and plenty of healthy activities and outings to enjoy while on their journey to health and wholeness. Highlighting the science behind their practices of the whole body approach, and setting clients on the path for good health and well-being is what makes them a nationally recognized Florida rehab center.  They are Joint Commission Accredited and focus on alcohol/drug addiction, while treating the whole person —mind, body, and spirit.

They believe that each client should be provided with the level of care best suited for him/her as an individual for their own personal addiction. There are various views on the different levels of care and the different names for these levels can be confusing to families trying to place a loved one.  They work with the family and loved ones of their clients to help them through the understanding the recovery process.  Addiction affects the whole family. They help the whole family to understand what wellness looks like.

Addiction Education & Awareness Concept Through Music Is Working

Main RIR Recovery Radio Partner Sponsorship

It’s Amazing, and we are so proud to see how since 2011 (going on twenty five of our own productions) the Rockers In Recovery® (RIR) concept of recovery concerts/festivals to carrying a message of Education & Awareness is working.

This same message is now being duplicated by many in the addiction recovery advocacy movement groups like the October, 2015 Washington DC Unite to Face Addiction Rally (with Joe Walsh and other well know musicians) , the 2014 Fed Up Rally, and now the 2016 SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week. It’s happening all over the United States. Since 2014/2015 many treatment programs have even adopted as a modality in the form of RIR Unplugged, with some using the concept as primary treatment.  What an honor and we look forward to seeing many more use our unique form of addiction prevention and education.

Tom Coderre ,Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA

    Tom Coderre

Feb.14, 2015, RIR Music Festival – Quote by Tom Coderre ,Senior White House Advisor to SAMHSA ”Rockers In Recovery® brings the private treatment sector, addiction education, and the addiction advocacy non-profit sector together in a unique way as no one else is doing anywhere in the United States. What makes RIR unique, the message is all around and through the universal language of music with some great rockers of our day. They combine it with educational speakers and advocacy groups. RIR brings it all together at their community addiction education meet and greets, and addiction awareness and prevention concerts/festivals”

The Miami-based Rockers in Recovery® are doing it the only way they know how — by example. In benefit concerts across the united states, through an online radio station, live TV streaming and social media, the novel effort aims to convene and support to communities  of music lovers dedicated to the sober lifestyle. Since 2011 RIR has produced 25 concert and festival productions. The productions are free to all, they are all inclusive not exclusive. They want people from the community to engage and have some fun. RIR brings together having fun and addiction education, while supporting community organizations that need help.

Some of the Rockers whom have supported RIR over the years are; Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Don Tyler of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Simon Kirke (Bad Co.), Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople), Michael Des Barres, Billy J. Kramer, LaLa Brooks (The Crystals), Gene Cornish (The Rascals), Peppy Castro (Blue Magoo’s), David Uosikkinen (The Hooters) and Tommy Conwell of the Young Rumblers.

Rockers In Recovery’s brainchild South Florida recovery radio veteran John Hollis, the cause is supported by an online radio station (RIR-Radio-station) that broadcasts music, interviews, reviews and news on addiction recovery and other topics to 20,000 to 25,000 listeners a month via a 24-hour, live-streamed Internet signal.

How The RIR Radio Station Works – Through the RIR platforms they have developed over the last 8 years, they reach millions of recovery based followers seeking information everyday around the world. Now through the station they get to enjoy all of the platforms in one place.

You can now engage on your smart TV, Computer, or Mobile Device! – The followers they reach can now engage some recovery fun through music and most importantly, get educated on addiction issues, and find help for themselves or a loved one through the Stations Interface. This is the first of its kind platform that brings Recovery and Rock-N-Roll together Addiction Education.

The concept began 8 years ago when RIR Founders Lori Sullivan & John Hollis started interviewing rockers in recovery and landed on a topic important to both of them: recovery. After investing about $100,000 of their own money into getting Rockers in Recovery off the ground in which Hollis & Sullivan paid for the first four festivals out of their own pockets back in 2011 and 2012, Why ? “because of lack of support” from the recovery field.

The great news is years later all festivals and events are now payed by Rockers In Recovery Radio and Productions Inc. and the financial backing of Recovery Partners like Clearbrook Treatment Centers of Pennsylvania ,The Shores Treatment and Recovery of Florida and The Laboratory Solution of New Jersey to name a few. Through the Recovery Partners sponsorship they get to provide free community education and information on help for addiction. Simply put Rockers In Recovery Festivals and Events is where Recovery Education & Rock-N-Roll Come Together.

Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd

Peter Keys - Band:Lynyrd Skynyrd

Live Interview From Tuesday, April 19 – 10PM (ET) with Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd  Talkin’ music & recovery- Peter is an American keyboardist. He is best known for his work with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic in various P-Funk line-ups and as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd since 2009.

Peter Keys was born in 1965, and began playing  piano at the age of 4. His first performance was one year later at The Neighborhood School of Music, in New Haven Ct.,Where he was classically trained. In 1976, He moved to northern California and started his first band, Smeagol. It was a mix of punk-funk and soul, way ahead of it’s time. Peter studied music through 1985, ending up at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., where he majored in composition and performance. Moving  back to the San Francisco bay area, he began his long journey as a working musician,  playing and recording with just about everybody on the scene.

After starting numerous original bands, playing countless local gigs on the west coast, and endless sessions, Peter headed east in 1996 to Atlanta Ga. Where he joined the legendary Original P-Funk line up, taking over for Bernie Worrell , a huge influence in his playing, filling the shoes of a genius and legendary performer.

With several years of touring in P-Funk under his belt, and  having shared the stage with everyone from Bootsy Collins and Snoop Dogg, to Chaka Kahn and Issac Hayes, In 2000, Peter moved to Detroit Mi. where he started Shock Logic Productions, a recording and video company in an old church which he converted into a studio. He spent the next few years honing his production chops on countless independent recordings and music videos.

Since 2009 Peter is a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd – The legacy began some 41 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, and halted for a decade by the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Allen Collins, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson, yet  rocks on with original member Gary Rossington joined by Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Johnny Colt, Peter Keys, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase.

Autopsy-Turvy AvailablePeter still plays various dates with the 420 Funk Mob, featuring George Clinton and members of the P-Funk Allstars, as well as playing with Kid Rock’s ex-guitarist and Grammy winner Kenny Olson, in their band “The All Time Low Stars”. When not on the road, he can be found in the studio producing and recording with a wide variety of artists, in many musical styles. Peter just released his debut solo project “Autopsy-Turvy”, which is now available at http://www.peterkeys.com or his Facebook Page http://www.facebook.com/peterkeys11 and of course at Skynyrd Skynyrd‘s website  http://www.lynyrdskynyrd.com.

Music and Self Expression – Helping Drug Addicts In Recovery

Rockers In Recovery - Media

Andy-Studio-Interview-m7g6jcl3faxvs96socfokq3puo0f0wji3pzrx6v1d8

Little Creek Lodge – Drummer Andy Pace

THE CONNECTION WITH DRUG ADDICTION & MUSIC:

Music is an extremely influential form of expression. It combines words and sound to convey a message that often reaches euphoric levels. Drugs and alcohol are meant to produce euphoria as well. Combine the two and the result is a very powerful and lasting imprint on the brain.

Pop music teaches us to use empowerment related to our identity. We use drugs and alcohol in combination in order to enhance that power. We use music to reinforce our sense of belonging to a particular social group. Addicts and alcoholics sometimes claim, ‘music is the only thing that understands me.’

Sparking the creative process without the use of drugs or alcohol is a very important step in early recovery. Re-starting the imagination takes internal motivation, work, and coaching. Discussion and encouragement are needed to begin the process of playing or writing music. One of the by-products of addiction is poor self-expression. Coming out of this thought pattern is difficult. Playing music in a healthy environment is a new experience, and practicing self-expression while allowing thoughts to flow freely without fear can feel quite foreign at first.

Recovery can be triggered by a vision, a sight, or a sound that awakens the senses:

When a resident at Little Creek Lodge, (a stat of the art music and rehabilitation facility located in Pennsylvania) is ready to record a project they call in an engineer to their in house recording studio who guides resident in the recording process. The prospect of editing, mixing, and mastering a piece of music is really exciting for residents. Little Creek tries to create one CD per year that is devoted to the writings of the residents. The process helps to provide feelings of accomplishment. There is great satisfaction found in the experience of completing a task from beginning to end, and residents take pride in their successes. Using music as a tool to create a chemical reaction in the brain to help recovery happen more quickly.  Music also helps to break down defenses to help facilitate, motivate and inspire clients to the change’s necessary to support long-term recovery.

Drummer Andy Pace and Little Creek Lodge is committed to building a strong foundation for his musical clients. Real recovery from drug and alcohol addiction cannot take place until we look beyond the pointing finger; until recovery becomes a realization and the person’s own idea. Something different happens to each and every one of them.

The man behind the vision, Drummer and Founder Andy Pace – His musical career began in the storied clubs of downtown New York City. As a teenager, he picked up small gigs at local hangouts like Cafe Wah and CBGB’s. Soon thereafter, he landed job as the house drummer for the original Copa Cabana, where he worked alongside Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, Tony Orlando, The Cornelius Brothers, and many other great R&B acts of the era. His journey as an artist and creative spirit had only just begun.

In the mid 70’s, Andy landed a gig with one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most exciting voices—Gary U.S. Bonds. His second date with Gary was Madison Square Garden. Andy was just 21 years old.

Gigs alongside legendary performers like Dick Clark, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, The Five Satins, and The Coasters followed, and Andy began travelling extensively. He spent the following years as a true touring musician, living all over the world from Lake Tahoe to New Orleans to Hawaii, Switzerland, and England.

In 1987, he married Barbara Warren¬Pace and the two would collaborate together on various musical projects. Barbara was a well-known artist manager herself, having helped guide the careers of legends like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston.

The next big break came In 1991. C+C Music Factory’s massive hit “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” took the world by storm, and Andy’s drumming provided the song’s backbeat. The album sold over 7 million CDs and led to MTV Music Awards, Saturday Night Live Appearances, and worldwide adulation. Not only that, but the song launched house music into the mainstream of popular music, where it’s remained ever since.

Andy obtained a degree in Addiction Counseling from State University of New York (S.U.N.Y) and then in 2008 founded Little Creek Lodge, a rehabilitation facility that has gone on to treat hundreds of patients struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Now, as the Lodge’s mission continues to expand, a new opportunity has emerged for Andy’s musical gifts. – “Rehab Recordings” is a record label and recording studio based in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania, that produces Recovery music to promote a sober lifestyle – Rehab Recordings.

Music Helps Addicts Feel Emotions Again

“Hurt” by Johnny Cash

John Hollis Co-Founder “Rockers In Recovery®”.

By John Hollis, Rockers In Recovery® Co-Founder –  “Hurt” by Johnny Cash – This is a song written by Trent Reznor first released on Nine Inch Nails’ 1994 album called The Downward Spiral. I’m a person in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, and this video hits me right to my core. Seeing what seems to be Johnny Cash’s life flashing before me in this video and knowing Cash’s own struggles with the same demons as myself, I can clearly feel the pain of his past. It was like he was passing on his message of a lifestyle that didn’t work. A warning of sorts to other suffers afflicted by the same demon’s.

It’s no wonder “Hurt” went on to commercial and critical acclaim. It attracted praise from Reznor for its “sincerity and meaning” while ending up being one of Cash’s final hits released before his death, who at the time was 11 years clean. The related Mark Romanek music video is considered one of the greatest of all time by publications such as NME.

In my opinion this is a addiction educational musical piece that should be played in treatment centers across the world. I believe it can help many in early recovery feel again and also see their own destructive active addiction behaviors. It may even sway a person actively using to say, “WOW” maybe I need help. I know the “Hurt” video has been a big therapeutic tool for my own recovery. This video helped me to feel emotions again, after being emotionally dead for years. It also helped me to see all the loved ones and friends that were left scorched by my addiction.

Thank you to Johnny Cash, Michael Trent Reznor, known professionally as Trent Reznor, an American singer-songwriter, record producer, film score composer, and Mark Romanek who’s dedication as a American filmmaker, brought Johnny Cash’s heartbreaking cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” on to a Grammy Award for Best Music Video.
